Sarah-jane | 144 comments Thanks for the answer Karsyn ! I will go and have a look around :)

Karsyn (imzadi) Karen ~ thanks! :) I've done the full 24 hours the other 3 times I joined in and I have no problem staying up so it's not too much of an issue for me. I read about 18-20 hours of it, the rest is spent on social media and/or eating. But I go for the full 24 hours. It's great!

Joi ~ awesome that you'll be doing the whole time as well. YAY! I don't ever use Twitter either. I know it's the most popular place to share updates, but it's just not for me. I'm too verbose. I say 100 words instead of 10. :) I stick with my blog and visiting blogs.

There's no right or wrong way to check on everything. My first year I checked every 2 hours, the 2nd time I checked in every 4. Last time, I only checked at 12 hours and at the end again. I'm going to aim for 4-6 hours. But I'm pretty much surfing through the night once my eyes get tired. It's a good time to start the audiobooks and I'll surf while I'm listening.

There is actually a Goodreads group for the Dewey's blog. You can find it at https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/....

message 304: by Joi (new)

Joi | 665 comments How many books do you plan on reading, Karsyn?

message 305: by Karsyn (new)

Karsyn (imzadi) Ah yeah, I forgot about the group. I can't remember if I joined that one or the Bout of Books one, then when the time was all over it was so quiet, so I just dropped it. LOL!!

I'll probably hit at least 8, Joi, how about you? 8 is what I've done the last 2 times. The first time I stupidly listened to a LONG audio, so I only got through 5. I may get a bunch more though. I'm going to read a few shorter stories / novellas that I've been wanting to get to but don't fit into challenges, so I keep putting them off. It's a good time to get them read.

message 306: by Joi (last edited Oct 16, 2015 01:16PM) (new)

Joi | 665 comments I need to get at least 10 read. I have 30 books checked out right now. Then I have a lot of books on my Kindle, I need to see if I have some short ones I can get to. Also, what do you consider a short book?

message 307: by Karsyn (new)

Karsyn (imzadi) Awesome! I hope that you are able to get through at least the 10 you want to! Do you have snacks and food all lined up?

message 308: by Berit☀️✨ (new)

Berit☀️✨ (berittalksbooks) You girls are reading this amount of books in just 24 hours??? Pretty darn impressive!

message 309: by Karsyn (new)

Karsyn (imzadi) Yup, Berit. :) It's a full 24 hours of reading! It's so much fun and just twice a year so people who enjoy it really go all out for it. Of course, there's also Bout of Books, but that lasts a full week. :D

message 310: by Joi (last edited Oct 16, 2015 02:41PM) (new)

Joi | 665 comments For some reason, I got really tired after you told me to go to sleep, Karsyn. So I plan to get a full night's sleep and start in the morning.!

What's a long book to you?

Lindsay♫SingerOfStories♫ (lindsaysingerofstories) | 707 comments I *love* read-a-thons! I just joined the group and I'm going to give it a shot!! (I do have a couple homework assignments for school to get done too so might as well make it an all nighter and cross some things off of my TBR!!)

message 312: by Karsyn (new)

Karsyn (imzadi) Sorry I forgot to answer your first question about the short books. I think under 175 is considered novella? Not sure. I consider personally 100-150ish novella and anything under 100 a short story. I have 2 under 100 (one at 75 and one 99) and a few just over 150 pages.

Long books, for me, are anything over 500. I rarely read books long books. Dunno why, just all my books tend to fall in the 300-400 range for the most part. I'm aiming to read all under 300 for this one. It's definitely better for me to read a variety for the read-a-thons, rather than 1 chunkster.

For my first read-a-thon I was in the middle of the audio for Jonathan Strange & Mr Norell, and that wasn't smart to keep with that. The audio was over 9 hours and that was with me already being into it. Last time I did some audios from the short stories in the In Death series, and that worked out great! :)

Awesome that you got tired! Hope you are able to sleep. Usually when I'm wound up, I can't sleep, and I already have a hard time falling to sleep normally. I did get up early today so I'm HOPING I can be asleep by 12 or 1 and back up at 7 for the fun! :)

YAY for joining in Lindsay! I hope you love it, it's soooooo much fun!!

message 314: by Kazen (new)

Kazen I've done the read-a-thon before but the time zone thing kills me - it starts at 8 or 9 pm my time. Starting off with an all nighter isn't much fun. :( I may try to read a lot on the day to be with you guys in spirit, though!

message 315: by Alex (new)

Alex Willis (fightingokra) | 2 comments Hey Laura, I took some time off from reading this summer and after reading some comments I am glad I skipped the gladiator challenge. I think my leisurely reading style fits this challenge better than the gladiator. I really enjoyed the Wheel-a-thon earlier this year, even if it was amongst challenging circumstances in life.

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6399 comments Thanks Sonia and Mods, I know you'll do an awesome job with the teams. We all appreciate the tremendous organisation you all do for our enjoyment.

I used to think I was a big reader till I started doing challenges here - some people just left me in their reading dust.

And yes, watch out for us Aussies, we've got the biggest snakes, spiders and sharks ... and we're not afraid to use them, LOL.

I think you will really like tt4, Alex! Your chunky books will certainly add up for your team! (and hopefully no challenging life circumstances this time... which means you get to enjoy the challenge !!!) Read what you want and have lots of fun!!

edit--Gladiator games was fun but got a little crazy towards the end! I also took a huge break from reading, I think it was much needed! Excited for this challenge to start!

message 318: by Karsyn (new)

Karsyn (imzadi) Kazen ~ that would be weird to wait all day and start it at night. I'd probably do well with that kind though. I'm a night owl, so staying up all night is easy for me, but It'd be more alert nearing the end if it were during the day I think. Dunno! You definitely don't have to do the full time, it's just a spirit of reading time, so even if you can only get a while in, as long as you are reading and having fun, that's what matters with read-a-thons like this! :)

message 319: by Karsyn (new)

Karsyn (imzadi) Time for me to try to get some sleep tonight. HOPEFULLY I won't toss and turn half of the night, so I can be ready for tomorrow. Everyone who is doing Dewey ~ have fun!!

message 320: by Karla (new)

Karla I just signed up for the read-a-thon. It starts at 5am for me, so I'll be sleeping for the first few hours of it. But, I'll put in as much time as I can. I hope to finish Hard Eight (Stephanie Plum, #8) by Janet Evanovich

Bwahaha, perfect! Some of the reviews are great too:

"On one occasion, I failed to grasp the little blighter properly and it somehow managed to begin crawling up the outside of the bristles toward me. Needless to say I suffered some form of black out/mild cardiac event, and when I came to the spider was nowhere to be seen."

The size of some of those spiders in the pictures leads me to wonder why I would want it alive when I get near it. Some of those spiders made me wonder if my putter was a large enough club to give me peace of mind.

The big ones are usually harmless to us, but useful for catching mozzies so I don't move them unless in the bedroom as I don't like the idea of one being near the bed! :o
I don't like to kill those ones, but a broom works pretty well to move them outside!

Karsyn (imzadi) Morning (for me) Karen! How are you today?

I'm starting out with ~

Detached (The Rewind Agency, #3) by Jill Cooper

It's fitting since I started the first book of the series on my 2nd Dewey's. :) I think I read the 2nd one during Bout of Books. Great series, I'm looking forward to it. From there, I'm not really sure. We'll see what I feel like! :D

Karsyn, I woke up like 20 minutes late, but immediately started reading. I'm trying to finish Alone (Detective D.D. Warren, #1) by Lisa Gardner while my kindle charges.

That does sound like a fitting book to start Karsyn!

Maria - welcome! Best advice is to read what you will enjoy and don't pick books to fit goals and force yourself through it as its a sure fire way to get reading burn out. Also, check in with your team regularly and remember to shelve books to the right shelf as this will help out your captains enormously. Otherwise have a healthy sense of competition and have fun! :D

message 335: by Karsyn (last edited Oct 17, 2015 01:24PM) (new)

Karsyn (imzadi) It was a great book Karen, I enjoyed it! :)

8 hours in, read for about 6 1/2 hours of that. I completed 2 books (both on the short side) and one short story. Looking to start an audiobook at 430 so I can do a little surfing and seeing what others are posting on their blogs for their RAT.

How you doing Joi? My Kindle had to be plugged in after the first book. It's a Fire, and a refurbed old one I've had for a while. It's battery doesn't last too long, but it still works. :) Karla and Lindsay, how are y'all doing?

Completed ~

Well done Karsyn! I've always wondered how people surf while listening to an audiobook. I find I then it out as I'm concentrating elsewhere! I'm better with audio in the car or while cleaning or gardening etc.

You're doing awesome!

I've only been able to read 16 pages, I was really late to get started and then I keep getting distracted. I'm going to get back to it now.

Same for me. I can only clean or walk when listening to an audiobook.

I really only look at things, or play a game, nothing that takes a whole lot of concentration, just something my eyes take in ~ if that makes sense. If I do something like read a post (like yours) or reply like now, then I'll pause it til I'm done and turn it back on again. I'm definitely not trying to read posts or write something while listening, just more of looking type stuff, doesn't distract me at all.

I'm trying to finish Hard Eight (Stephanie Plum, #8) by Janet Evanovich . I only have about 60 pages left. I love this series!

message 343: by Joi (new)

Joi | 665 comments I got 3 books done. But they were all short and of the same genre, so I'm looking for something different now. I may have to go towards longer books now to get some different genres.

message 344: by Joi (new)

Joi | 665 comments Karsyn, how are you holding up? I had to take a break and start an audiobook while I color. My eyes were hurting me.

message 345: by Karsyn (new)

Karsyn (imzadi) OMG Joi! I just finished up the page that I was coloring!! I am listening to an audiobook as well and was doing a page! I had to tell my Hubby you were coloring too. He couldn't believe that we were pretty much coloring at the same time! Awesome!! :D

Going well here. Was going to get to a Kindle book before this audio, because my eyes weren't hurting yet, but I got caught up in the audio so I just stuck with it. It'll be my 5th completed, have just over a half hour left on it. How many books you up to?

My first 3 were all of the same genre as well ~ all SciFi. Two time traveling ones and one virtual reality.

Ah yeah, you mentioned that. Sorry! Did you enjoy it? I tried the first book in the series YEARS ago, but it wasn't for me. I have friends who love it as well. Did you get to another book now?

Karsyn (imzadi) Alex wrote: "I feel like an old man with my stance of not liking audiobooks. To me the point is to actually read the books and listening feels like cheating."

You're not the first person to feel that way. To each their own, I guess. But, you're saying a blind person, who perhaps listens to audiobooks, has never read a book in their life, ever?

I disagree with you. I'm getting the story, same as I would if I were reading it. I'm actually getting MORE of it in reality, as with a Kindle book, I'll unconsciously skip over words like "A", "and", "the". Seeing them but not actually READING them. With the audio, I'm hearing every word.

I'm a fairly recent convert to audiobooks, well 3 years. I enjoy listening to them at night before I fall asleep because I have problems falling asleep at night. Better to lay there listening than to toss and turn all night doing nothing. Audiobooks are great for read-a-thon cuz after 12+ hours of reading, the eyes really do start to hurt.

Jen (reader44ever) | 2930 comments Alex wrote: "I feel like an old man with my stance of not liking audiobooks. To me the point is to actually read the books and listening feels like cheating."

Listening isn't cheating to me, it's just different. I recently took a road trip from Arizona to Oklahoma and listened to several audiobooks as I drove. I can't listen to audiobooks as part of my normal everyday life, however. I'm envious of people who can listen to books while they walk their dog/s, do chores, etc. I can't focus well enough to listen to audiobooks while doing these things. But I was ever so grateful for them when I was driving 16+ hours to Oklahoma and back! :-)
