This sounds like Lawrence Watt-Evans and his Annals of the Chosen, http://www.fantasticfiction.co.uk/w/l... the first title is The Wizard Lord.
The world in which the story takes place is magical. There are wizards in the world and they get together and chose one of themselves to be the "Wizard king" and he gets tons of magic power. To keep him in check there are chosen heroes who each have different abilities and carry sigils/medals that are their powers. They all have to be together to fight the wizard king. I can't remember all the heroes but i know there was a warrior, a beauty, a fortune teller/medium, maybe a thief, and a couple others.
The main character is a boy from a small village who meets the Chosen Warrior who happens to be passing through. After talking to him, he tells the Warrior he would like to be the warrior. The original chosen agrees to it. Small ceremony I think. Chosen gives the boy his emblem/sigil/medal thing and tells him all about what it takes to be the warrior. The emblem grants with all the skills and power he needs but also makes him practice with his sword a couple of times a day. He then sets out to find the other chosen....

(view spoiler)[After meeting some of the other chosen heroes, they realize that the wizard king is bad and they must go stop him/defeat him. After gathering all the others, they set out to fight the wizard king. In the end it turns out, one of the chosen was a informant/betrayer for the wizard king. Want to say it was the knight guy and he was older but fuzzy on those details (hide spoiler)]
I've searched for this book the last year or so. I think a sequel came out not too long ago. Thanks ahead of time for any and all help. Much appreciated!
