I was deeply moved by Dr. Amporn's story . The skillful narrative written by Chantal Jauvin put me in the body and mind of a five year old homeless orphan. I experienced emptiness and purposelessness a child feels unable to rationalize lonely poverty. I understand better the simple motivation of boy soldiers. In Amporn's case it began with his early years suffering unimaginable hunger. As a soldier he was fed, felt wanted and was praised for the first time in his short life as he was being trained to to kill. The Cambodian jungle scenes are graphic and intense.
In his late teens, Dr. Amporn's life begins to turn. His thirst for knowledge, desire for a family, and to unite with the spirit of his mother compel him to risk a hero's journey. Dr.A's introspection serves him to make better choices but his inner voice of the orphan with no purpose or value is unrelenting at times.
Dr. A's path offers valuable mentors along the way that teach him skills , lessons and knowledge that continue his growth. The author uses these conversations to deftly answer some spiritual questions we all struggle with.
Chantal Jauvin, in writing Dr. Amporn's story has given inspiration to not only Thais but anyone who thinks their obstacles in life are insurmountable.
