Joan Sebastián Araujo Arenas (sebasarena) | 5 comments I changed my name here in Goodreads and I automatically disappeared from the “top librarians” list of my country: https://www.goodreads.com/librarian/t... . Will I appear the next time the list will be generated? I didn't know that making a change of name would do that... Now Im like a “ghost” librarian: https://www.goodreads.com/librarian/u...

Elizabeth (Alaska) When you changed your name, did you remove your country from your profile?

I only changed the privacy, but I didn't remove my country.

lethe | 16359 comments Yes, when you have no country listed, you won't appear in the list of top librarians, because that works per country.

(BTW, I reverted two edits you made just now in a publisher's name. Manantial is enough, Ediciones and SRL are superfluous.)

I think when you make that private it means that no one can see it. If you appeared in a country list, we would know the country, making it public, not private.

It wasn't superflous because that was the specific name of the publisher in those books. Here it's: http://i.imgur.com/LiDFUK0.png

Ok, I'll change the privacy again.

lethe | 16359 comments It *is* superfluous. We already know the publisher is a publisher, and abbreviations are not used when adding publisher names. When cataloguing books, we use the shortest name possible.

Other examples: 'W.W. Norton & Company, Inc.' becomes 'Norton'.
'Em. Querido's Uitgeversmaatschappij B.V.' becomes 'Querido'.

ETA I reverted your changes again.

But If someone needs to use Goodreads to cite an specific edition of an specific book, he/she will need the whole name of the publisher, even If it's long or not. I don't see if there's a technical problem with using the whole name, because this is a virtual library, so, the rule of the “shortest name possible” it seems more accurate to a physical library...

lethe | 16359 comments For citing, the names I quoted in my example are used. NOT the long forms. Citations especially should be as short as possible.

Longer versions of publisher names are acceptable. So are shorter ones. Like many things on a book record, it is a question of personal preference, and not a reason to undo another librarian's edits.

And if you have a concern about another librarian's edits, please flag them or use the contact link. Do not debate it in this group.
