Lisa Fleming (korexeileithyia) | 45 comments All i remember is the male protagonist was either king or high prince he was 37
The female protagonist was 17 she was abandoned by her family and lived with a "street gang" that banded together for safety. Youngest member of this gang was 2 whos mother threw him out from her home on the slums.

Basic concept. Years prior to the story line a man was exiled from the planet. He had to go north to a temple and climb down a ladder to another planet. He vows revenge.
Ten(ish) years later exile is back and leaves the door in the temple open and a race of beings enters the planet the same way and commits war on the population. The only way to kill these beings is hand to hand combat. There are only two people that know hand to hand. The granddaughter and grandson of a minor noble of the land who was considered "eccentric" because the population learned how to use special stones to stay awake to fly and other things.
Specifics of the two main characters. The ruler of the land (high prince/king) went to a person to years before to read his future and find out where and who his future wife is. Theres not a whole lot about her as she wasnt born at that time. He was given some way to recognize her tho. Fast Forward... The girl doesnt know her real family. Shes part of a street gang. The whole gang shes with dont really cause trouble. They just try to stay out of the way of others. Shes got this special stone that she can use to keep herself awake or trade it for a loaf of bread and tie herself and the others into trashcans to sleep so they dont all float away. She trades the stone for bread. Skip forward some.... That stone is made into an emblem and used as a donation or tax from the baker. It winds up in the presence of the ruler who is taken aback because he recognizes the girls essence/life force in that stone. He usually doesnt take these types of things, he usually donates them to help the poverty stricken in his kingdom. He confuses everyone when he decides to keep that one piece tho. He wants to go look for her but war broke out and his people are dying. ... Oh the girls name is Twyla or Twilla ... After the two kids that know hand to hand help train the fighting forces the street gang kids are rescued by the people that are traveling with the ruler. There are fighting forces and families in this forced march.

Thats all i remember... Wished i could five more info. TYIA for any help.

When did you read this? Full length novel, rather than short story?

message 4: by Andy (new)

Andy | 2124 comments There's a fantasy novel called Mirror of Destiny by Andre Norton with a character named Twilla.

Lisa Fleming (korexeileithyia) | 45 comments I have mirror of destiny. The male main protagonist is older but he's blind. His brother is full of anger. That twilla is forced over mountain because she has no blood kin and even her mistress can't save her. They are forced into the forest and work with the tree magical folk to stop the raping of the land and the enchantments on the human population. Good book. Andre Norton is an awesome fantasy mistress. Not the book I'm looking for tho. Thanks anyway...

Lisa Fleming (korexeileithyia) | 45 comments Lobstergirl. It's been since early 2000s. Before 08. It's a full length novel. And it's akin to Tracey Hickman and Margaret Wiess feel in the storyline.

Lisa Fleming (korexeileithyia) | 45 comments Hoping to try and bring this up from the dredges again to hopefully see if there is a chance that some one will know the title or author of this book,

Twilla, you can check "notify me when people reply" at the bottom of this thread which should keep you updated.

Lisa Fleming (korexeileithyia) | 45 comments I'm thinking there might be a chance the name of the girl is Tulia tho I really am not sure... I plan to look it up again with that in the mix and see what I get... I'm just hoping to find this one soon.

SparksofEmber | 957 comments So is there no gravity on this planet? How do people access a planet via a ladder? It sounds like a very odd universe?

Do you remember anything about the cover?

Sounds slightly like the world of Sun of Suns.

message 13: by Lisa (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lisa Fleming (korexeileithyia) | 45 comments Theres gravity the floating is a subconscious act of the people it developed with them as they evolved...

SparksofEmber | 957 comments No problem, Lisa. I take it it definitely wasn't Sun of Suns?

Did the book have more of a fantasy vibe or a science fiction one? Was it definitely other planets or could it be dimensions and the like? Are the stones magic?
Also, is it more of an adventure or a romance?
Do you remember anything else about the plot - we've got beings that can only be defeated in hand to hand combat taught by two kids and a forced march with the ruler and his subjects and his destined mate, a street gang leader...

message 17: by Lisa (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lisa Fleming (korexeileithyia) | 45 comments No ma'am its not sun of suns. Sounds good tho. Ill have to check that out later.

message 18: by 0possum (new)

0possum | 70 comments Does this girl live with her gang in a hidden part of the city because they are extra children (or something) ? Do most citizens wear some sort of wristband? Is there a 'bad' religious guy too? That YA book (whatever it is) is what I think of when I read your description. But I think I am conflating your book with something else and it's driving me crazy since the whole hand-to-hand combat thing is very clear to me (in some book or another). I think I remember that in one of the Psion books by Joan Vinge: Psion Catspaw World's End But probably not. I will be glad when this is solved!

message 21: by 0possum (new)

0possum | 70 comments I will take a look and see if I can hunt it down. I'm pretty sure I read it on kindle. It's not a romance really it's more of a fix the world. It is a different planet. It may be a trilogy. I read it after 2007. I doubt it was new then. Maybe I'll get lucky, find the title and it'll be the one you are after too.

It might have been a paperback so I'm checking there too. I will keep plugging away because now it's bothering me too. Maybe with the bumps someone will see this query and actually know the name of the darn book.

SparksofEmber | 957 comments Do either of you have any recollection of what the cover may have looked like?
Was it part of a series or stand-alone?

message 28: by 0possum (new)

0possum | 70 comments I originally conflated the above book with another series. I do believe there is at least one more book but -check with Lisa- Although we are fairly positive we are talking about the same book one can never really tell until it's located.

message 29: by Lisa (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lisa Fleming (korexeileithyia) | 45 comments I'm pretty sure it was a stand alone. Opp has been great about this. Thank you. The cover? I want to say it was a scene in a desert with some people and a critter a couple of people were fighting.

I'm about to paint my study so I will be removing my books and boxing them up. I can see (slight chance to none) if I have the paper version. Now i think I read a paper version.

Unfortunately that was suggested and turned out not to be the book, back at message 5 or 6 (super early on).

I've been following this thread for a while and still google occasionally - no luck yet though. Fingers crossed!

Something to look into sounds interesting. I've never heard of it but it's not quite as you stated. I'm going to look now tho even if it's too say thank you but it's not it....
I did go to the library of Congress and it stumped them too.

That sounds like Pegasus in Flight - the girl is called Tirla. -- however the main description does not match up with this book.
