The Name of the Wind

Hell for Slow Authors

I propose that we establish a new hell for authors who write a smoking story, continue the series and then stop writing. My nominees for the first denizens of this hell would be:
Patrick Rothfuss, The Name of the Wind
George R.R. Martin, Game of Thrones
Gregory Betancourt, Amber Series
These individuals are the best example of why I will generally NOT read series until all the books are out.
Rant over.
So: feel free to post the following:
1) what that hell would consist of (please be imaginative)
2) proposed other admittees to said hell
3) diatribe about why I'm wrong

So, what I do when this happens is, I go read other authors. It's a great trick.
Ha Ha Ha! I do a agree with you but I fall into a series before I find out if all the books are out. I really have a problem with Mr. Martin. He is killing me all the delays. I actually thought the 6th book was coming out this year and reread the entire series again. Well that was a waste of five books. Now it is not coming out until next year sometime.
Part of what keeps me interested in a series or a particular author is the suspense of waiting for the next book to come out. I feel less satisfied if all the books were available in one go; although it does feel great to finish the series. However, the anxiety and suspense of waiting for the next book keeps me excited and it keeps me thinking, "what could happen?", "what will the author have them do?".
I would add Justin Cronin, author of The Passage and The Twelve.
I really enjoyed The Name of the Wind and A Wise Man's Fear. Both are terrific books...as far as I can remember. That's the problem. IF I decide to continue reading the series, I can't remember what happened in the earlier books!!

Orson Scott Card "The Tales of Alvin Maker"
Been waiting for the series's last book for 6 years now...

Maybe Chinese water torture?
That feeling of drip-drip-drip-drip for eternity seems suitable

For me a long wait is no problem, that adjoining period is a great time to read other good books, its when they say the book is coming out this year and then doesn't...
As for their infinite cycle of torment, the worst punishment i can imagine for any writer is making them burn books. But since that is also psychological torture for me to just think about it, I suggest stringing them to the fan by their tows and turning its on.

Rothfuss lost it with me a long time ago. I am a consumer, I buy a product. I don't owe him or any other a favour so when he didn't deliver (with either the next book in the series and released that "work" called Slow Regard) I moved on. Will I ever go back to his book? No, I found far better novels and far better authors and no longer have any interest in "what happened to Kvothe"
I would add Melanie Rawn to this list. She wrote an amazing Ruins of Ambrai in 1994 and Mageborn Traitor in 1997, but we're still waiting for the Captal's Tower.
Although I understand her reasons for not continuing with this series (clinical depression)I will not buy or read another book by her until Captal's Tower is out, even if this makes me an entitled feeling b** in some people's opinion.
On the other hand, I prefer writers not churn out a book once a year if a longer delay means a higher quality.
What this particular hell should consist of?? I'm not particularly imaginative (that's why I read books and do not write them) but they should only be released after they have finished their stories.

I think the problem is when we stop seing books as art and started to see them as products, especially with such intricate stories as Rothfuss and Martin's.
Yes it sucks to wait, but I rather wait for and awesome book than have one per year, losing the quality (which unfortunately happens quite often).

1. All the people that say they've "given up" on Rothfuss will still read book 3 when it comes out.
2. It hasn't been very long at ALL compared to many other series (The Dark Tower anybody?)
3. At the end of the day, the author is the supplier, the reader is the demander. He can supply it whenever he wants, and you're free to consume other stories in the meantime.
