Will Macmillan Jones (willmacmillanjones) | 11324 comments I keep reading reports about people turning on their computers and finding W10 is being installed without their permission. As I'd prefer NOT to upgrade this old laptop, and can't really afford a new model, this is a concern.

Pam Baddeley | 3334 comments Before I upgraded, I had to keep going into Windows update every time I switched on and unticking it Will. That stopped it till I was read to go ahead, but can't guarantee they haven't used some craft ploy to get round that now.

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments I'm getting to grips with Windows 10. I have a laptop with it installed and also a virtual machine. It seems to be behaving well.

The reason for the upgrade was to find out if our ancient ledger software still works on it. It seems it does! I had to abandon the installation process and do a straight copy of one package, but it solved it.

Lydia St Giles (lydia_stg) | 62 comments I had a problem with the most recent upgrade of Windows 10, which lost my Start screen and disabled various things. After trying two or three solutions posted online I gave up and deleted that upgrade. Just waiting for Microsoft to notice and force another helping on me.
During that exercise I found an excellent computer magazine at the local shop. ComputerActive is not printed on glossy paper and filled with ads for newer machines. It has a lot of practical help, reviews of free software and it majors on problems and benefits of Windows 10.

Pearl Barley (pearl_barley) | 3 comments I also had huge problems with Windows 10, so I rolled it back and my computer has been fine since. As to ComputerActive, I've been getting this magazine for the past 7 years, and I agree it's one of, if not, the best computer magazine around, no hefty price or loads of ads, just good advice and tips and this started out at 99p and hasn't increased much in all that time. I gave away a huge bundle of them last year because they are updated and a copy from 7 years ago will of course be obsolete. I used to buy WebUser as well which I believe was the sister magazine, but I haven't seen it in WH Smiths for a while.

Lydia St Giles (lydia_stg) | 62 comments There are digital issues, I believe, but not for Kindle. A CD containing all the 2015 issues can be bought from Amazon. The news items willl be out-of-date but the help columns and reviews may still be of interest.

Rennie Bottali (RennieBottali) | 16 comments I think you need to submit your query on Windows support forum.

Lydia St Giles (lydia_stg) | 62 comments I hope posting this here will reach people with both Kindles and Windows 10 machines. There's an article in The Guardian (technology pages) about problems with Kindles being plugged into Win10 machines for recharge or book-purposes where the PC has had the Anniversary update unstalled. Best of luck, if that's you.

Pam Baddeley | 3334 comments Thanks Lydia, posting the link here - Kindle Crashes Win 10. Haven't tried it yet, sounds like a recent Win10 update is responsible.
