Gina This book is surely film-worthy; however, just the right type of actors/actresses would have to be employed. While it was a depressing book (at times), it was one of the most captivating reads of all time. The characters were formed to their fullest, the story line never grew stale. I loved being able to truly know the mindset of each character as the story developed. I believe I will never forget this book.

Katerina Moschovakou JB is black while Malcolm is mixed race

My dream cast would be:
Jude St. Francis: Jude law
Willem: Tom Hardy
Malcom: Will Smith
JB: Johnny Depp"

PaintedHyena Am I the only person who thinks Stanley Tucci would make an amazing Harold? Also, I think whoever plays Jude should be or look at least a little Native American, he sounds like he is. And I agree that Joseph Gordon-Levitt (and maybe a young look-alike for younger scenes) could do well with the role too. And I think the cast should start young and film it carefully over several years, or at least the fact that the characters go from their late teens to their 50s really needs to be taken into consideration if it ever is made into a movie. They tried to make Robert Downy Jr. look young on Capt. America Civil War, and there are movies to compare the way he used to look years ago and he, in my opinion, just didn't look right. So with that in mind, I think they should pay close attention to that aspect. And I think a whole set of new actors for the other three, or even all four, guys would be really cool to see.

Karina Parada The perfect Jude should be played by the French Singer Stromae. When I saw his face I recognized the image I have in my mind for Jude

Claire Pickett Interesting casting for the limited TV series now being offered to cable/streaming by Scott Rudin. I would test Eddie Redmayne and Joseph Gordon-Levitt for Jude. Skarsgard for Willem or even Chris Pine. I like Michael B. Jordan for JB or Malcolm. Whoever plays JB would have to gain weight. Unfortunately a lot of the actors who would have to be aged from 20 to 50 are much too old...Jude Law for one.

Adwoa I have two randoms for Jude/Willelm:

Jude: This young model named Max Fieschi
Willem: Hayden Christensen

Marina Borisova Melanie wrote: "My ideas:

Jude: Wentworth Miller (but with hair), Oscar Isaac or Jesse Williams
Willem: Josh Holloway, Alexander Skarsgard
JB: Taye Diggs, Steve Harris
Malcolm: Boris Kodjoe, Michael B. Jordan

Hair or no hair, Wentworth Miller would be the best choice, if you ask me.

Harry Hennah Brenda wrote: "Greetings. The fact that you gave this book movie status, makes me want to read it more. I have movie dreams for my book Alice Had a Palace, and believe it should be made into a movie. Dreaming too..."

Ezra Miller is a GREAT suggestion!

Harry Hennah Kristen wrote: "How about Anthony Mackie playing Malcolm?!"

I don't know why but I pictured Malcolm as very light skinned black while reading.

Harry Hennah This could be a really successful TV series rather than a film I think... But it would have to be just as drawn out as the book and I can't begin to cast people though I love the idea of Ezra Miller or JGL as Jude.

A movie would not do this book justice! A series would be better! I havent even finished reading it but I am too afraid to get to the end :(

message 63: by Gina (new) - rated it 5 stars

Gina Mado, I hear you! I was sad when I finished it. You make a good point about it being made into a mini series...good idea.

Daniel Santana It's better a Mini Series for this book that a movie

I pictured Jesse Williams as Malcolm while reading the book

Jeannie Definitely get a Canadian to play Jude since he utters 'sorry' throughout the entire book🤦🏼‍♀️

I agree. What a bleak movie it would be

Mike What a frightening concept; to make this novel into a film. First off, it would be a difficult shoot for any group of actors, any crew and creative team, to be around such suffering without a joke in sight. Not even an attempted shot at having the protagonist smile! Think about it, think about the table read, the shoot, the long days of hell for the director and actors. Contemplate getting 700 pages on the screen! Okay, I'm kidding. But I do believe Bill Murray plays Caleb. Kidding again.

message 71: by lisa (new) - rated it 5 stars

lisa I see Jude as a really cleaned up Joaquin Phoenix. Willem maybe Owen Wilson (yes I think he could do it) or Brad Pitt. JB - John David Washington. Malcolm - that is up for grabs.

I am so torn. I think this should be a film, and yet it is so profoundly hard to read that I imagine watching it would be hard to watch.

message 72: by Paras (last edited Jul 03, 2019 10:20AM) (new)

Paras Pala I can't stop picturing Harry Lloyd from his Doctor Who days. I can see Lloyd portraying Jude's stubbornness from the latter part of the book quite well, especially with his performance as Viserys on Game of Thrones.

Kimie As I was reading, I was unconsciously picturing:

Joseph Gordon Levitt as Jude
Michael Fassbender as William
Jordan Peele as JB
Was having trouble picturing Malcolm

Having thought about it, my dream cast would be:

Joseph Gordon Levitt or Rami Malek as Jude
Billy Magnussen as Willem
Daniel Kaluuya as JB (with some weight gain)
Still stumped by Malcolm! :)

Leonore Liz wrote: "I agree with Anita. Although the idea of a movie appeals to me on the surface, I'm not sure I would actually watch it! I loved this book so much and I want it to remain forever preserved in my mind..."

I feel exactly the same way. While I enjoy the idea of watching this as a movie, I can't imagine that this could be captured in a way I would find satisfying. Although we might be surprised. It was actually adapted as a theater play which, on the other hand, I can imagine better.
I'd however LOVE to see what JBs art might look like and Richards as well.

Mazaya GQ wrote their casting prediction and I thought they have great picks! https://www.gq.com/story/a-little-lif...

However, I recently stumbled upon Niki's MV called Indigo, the male actor in there is EXACTLY how I pictured Jude would look - beautiful and ethnically ambiguous, albeit he was a bit young, I thought he'd be great as Young Jude.

What is Niki's MV? And where do I find him?

It's a song called Indigo by singer Niki. You can watch it here: https://youtu.be/5e6F1VA6WG4

Thank you! :) Yeah, I can see what you mean, goes a bit into the Rami Malek direction, too.

Quirine Goossens Don't know if i could handle a movie TBH. I'd be way too scared to put myself through Jude's life again. Shit that man went through an eternity of misery in one sitting, don't want that brought to life in gory detail thank you. The words were beautiful but pictures would be too much.

Leonore I get what you mean. Especially since I feel like some movie adaptions tend to "increase the volume" and make things you could deal with in the book harder to cope with on the screen. E.g. I liked The Handmaid's Tale, but the TV show was too much for me.
I suppose it's one of those cases where you like the idea of it becoming a movie, but you don't really want to be disappointed, so you'd rather not have them adapt it.
And you're right, I don't know if a movie could do Yanagihara's writing style justice. That woman made me read a 900+ page tomb about an emotional septic tank and I found it beautiful. When I first read the WikiPedia summary I thought that is one story I definitely don't want to read. Gladly a friend convinced me to give it a try.

Yeah totally get it, this is one of those adaptations that could go on the extreme ends of being award winning kind of good or just internet trashing kind of bad, especially with the themes that the book brought up. I'm just glad the plan is to adapt it into a series rather than a movie, I find it very difficult to imagine this book being crammed into a 2hr movie.
