Chapter 2 - (view spoiler)[ just started! The first time I read this I really rushed it and wasn’t very focused. This time I want to go slow and really enjoy the plot as well as the writing. I never noticed this before, but the back story is really well presented from Simons’ perspective. We get it in small bursts and I absolutely love those little parts in brackets that add more to his character and personality. Really enjoyable! (hide spoiler)]

Oh, no. I haven't read "Fangirl" -- do I have to do that first?

I was hoping we would be diverted from the HP rip-off and that we would be thrown in a totally new and unexpected direction (considering the high reviews of this book), but you say 1-8? Huh. So should I read this as a tongue-and-cheek HP fan fiction thingy or something? Or should I just ignore the HP similarities and read it as if I knew nothing about HP?

This is very Harry Potter like, but it's supposed to be. In the author's note, Rowell says this was her take on the whole "chose one" plot. A lot of people don't like it because it'd unoriginal, but if you've read fangirl and have already fallen in love with Simon, Baz and Penny, this is the book.

Do I need to have read Fangirl first to appreciate this book?

I haven't read Fangirl and liked it just fine, don't know what I'm missing by not reading it first though to say whether it would make a difference if I had.

The humor in the book won me over in the end. No matter what was going on I would find myself laughing at things going on. :)

Chapters 31-51. A lot of coincidences. Baz and Simon's exchanges are witty. Wonder if the caretaker's brother has any involvement.
