Does anyone have any tips on how to make a book have more angst? It sounds horrible, but I want my readers to feel my characters pain.

Internal conflict works well. Make them face a situation that causes emotional conflict or challenges their morals. For example: in my WIP, the protagonist's uncle has Alzheimers. Aliens brought him back from the brink of death, but the aliens couldn't sustain his healing, so he slipped back into dementia (and did die eventually). A lot of her thoughts and conversations are about grappling between the joy of seeing him healed (for a little while) and her horror at seeing him suffer all over again.
[how cruel! Ugh! :( ] ..Although, I do agree with -- 'I have seen the beauty of good, and the ugliness of evil'
