The Gargoyle was good! I really liked it! I meant to start Graveyard two weeks ago as well for another group (Which you are a part of I believe ;)) but it didn't come in the mail on time. Grrrrrr. after Graveyard I have Graceling for this group and then Hush Hush for another group! And then Fire wich is the follow up for Graceling...and then I have a list forever long for December! Oo-er

What's on your TBR list for the remainder of this month?

Oh, man! I remember reading WUTHERING HEIGHTS when I was in the 7th grade. I loved it! Wonder if I still would??

message 408: by Karla (new)

Karla (bookarita) | 289 comments Melodie maybe you can pick it up and read it next week too?!

La pointe de la sauce (k1ng) Just finished War and Peace. Totally blew me away, definitely a must read book. I would suggest Reading a short classic (if there is such a thing) before embarking on this massive read, just to help put it in context. A supremely fantastic book.

Happy Reading

My daughter and I have been counting down the days. I preordered it from Books a Million and it arrived yesterday but I was in Wal Mart today and noticed they already have the hardback.

Emily | 48 comments Just started two books. "The Road" Cormac McCarthy and "The Amazing Adventures of Kavlier and Clay" Michael Chabon.

Not on purpose that they're both Pulitzer winners, I swear!

I am a HUGE fan of Chabon, and he never fails me (reading him is like word candy...or maybe a word feast...he is just incredible with sentence structure and WC), but I have yet to read this title! More focus on 'The Road' at the moment though since I need to finish before the movie comes out!

There're plenty of short classics out there...A Christmas Carol, Frankenstein, The Scarlet Letter, Ethan Frome all spring to mind...I might start with some of Chekhov's short stories, though. That'd be a better entry point to War and Peace, I think.

I remember reading Ethan Frome in High School. I liked it a lot! Haven't talked about it in a while though...anyone seen the movie based on it? Liam Neeson?

Never seen the movie, but I remember reading it in high school as well. I loved it. One of the only assigned books that I actually flew through. It was for a class other than lit, I remember that. My lit teacher and I had exactly opposite taste in books!

I have this book as well and keep meaning to read it but I keep hearing mixed reviews...:\

Dean (cowboys86) | 122 comments You both really need to read The Road, it's excellent. Blood Meridian is probably better though.

I'm starting the 4th book in The Dresden Files tonight, Summer Knight.

Yeah I just started on the Road yesterday. It's good. But definitely bleak and depressing. My grandma said it was really good, and that the end is interesting. But it's definitely not a light and cheery read. I'm excited to see how it turns out!

message 425: by Dean (new)

Dean (cowboys86) | 122 comments Yeah, it is very dark and there are some really disturbing scenes. But it's brilliant all the same, Blood Meridian is kind of like that as well, only more violent.

message 427: by Harriet (new)

Harriet | 81 comments The Catcher in the Rye - J. D. Salinger. One of those books I've been meaning to read for ages and am finally getting round to it. Really enjoying it so far. I'm also re-reading Frankenstein for uni, which I loved 1st time round.

message 428: by Dean (new)

Dean (cowboys86) | 122 comments Yeah, I still haven't read Catcher in the Rye either. It's one of those books that almost everyone has read, and one I want to read but never seem to get around to it.

message 429: by Pollyanna (new)

Pollyanna (polly8) I am reading The Amazing Adventures of Dietgirl by Shauna Reid I am really enjoying it and it is a great book for anyone else who really wants to lose some weight.

message 430: by Maria (new)

Maria | 1 comments I'm reading 'Invasion' by Julie Elizabeth Powell, she's a Goodreads author. It's a fantasy book, and the second in a trilogy. The first one 'The Star Realm' was really good. It's aimed at children, but much like the Harry Potter books, it has the potential to appeal to all ages.

Harriet | 81 comments Dean wrote: "Yeah, I still haven't read Catcher in the Rye either. It's one of those books that almost everyone has read, and one I want to read but never seem to get around to it."

It's really quite good so far. I was worried that it would be one of those books that wouldn't live up to the hype because it's been hailed as such a classic book. I bought To Kill a Mockingbird with it as well, another one of those must-reads.

DJ (djdivaofjava) | 659 comments Lisa re THE BIRTHING HOUSE er it was pretty rubbish and I do t te d to say that about a book. And the only way it could possibly be compared to THE SHINING is that you just think the guy is having a breakdown and to be honest at that point you've given up caring!
If you want more specifics please let me know.
My advice would be to just skip it!

Thanks! I heard a lot of mixed reviews so I wasn't sure whether to buy them or not. I bought the first one so if I like it, I'll buy the rest of the series. I'm sure I'll love them, though! :)
