Karla (bookarita) | 289 comments Its hard to get through the first 50 or so pages. Then you meet a few interesting characters and it starts to flow and I'm really getting into it now. Its got some twists and spunk that most mysteries and thrillers are missing lately. I'm half through it right now loads to go so well see!

Jerrod (liquidazrael) added The Return of the Great Depression to my daily reading list, very good book.

Lynne - The Book Squirrel (squirrelsend) I recieved Under the Dome by Stephen King - his latest epic yesterday from Amazon and it is brilliant! The blurb says its 'His finest Epic since The Stand'. As The Stand is my all time fave King novel I had to start it straight away on night duty last night and I was hooked from page 1! Its take Stephen 25 years to write this novel and boy is it worth waiting for? To this big King fan....oh yes!

message 357: by Karla (new)

Karla (bookarita) | 289 comments I think Ill have to buy that King book for my husband for Christmas then I can eventually read it too! LOL! I'm always telling him to try a new author but he only reads King and nothing else! I think I have him talked into trying The Gargoyle though ;)

message 358: by Karla (new)

Karla (bookarita) | 289 comments Jo have you read The Stand?

Totally agree with that. In the first chapter I almost left it but perservered and was fantastic. All three are brilliant!

Karla (bookarita) | 289 comments Yas, did the other two in the series start the same way? Also is The girl who kicked the hornets nest published yet? I haven't seen it here yet.

message 362: by Yassemin (new)

Yassemin (yas666) | 59 comments No, I think the second one starts a lot better, less boring stuff to get through and the third one is the best! Tgwkthn came out in the UK on the 1st October..if your in the US, I think it may be a summer date..may be wrong! Hope that helps.

message 363: by Karla (new)

Karla (bookarita) | 289 comments I guess it makes since you live closer to Sweden than I!! I'm glad to hear the other two have a better first 50 pages. That honestly was an odd beginning of a series ya know! I keep thinking I bet so many readers might have gave up and missed an excellent mystery.

message 364: by Yassemin (new)

Yassemin (yas666) | 59 comments Yeah I know..I personally was close to giving it up after chap one but needless to say the series only gets better! Hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

I finished Mr Commitment and the first of Sookie and have started both Graceling and Shiver. So far so good! Haven't started HUsh, HUsh yet but only because I usually only have two going at a time if I can help it. ;)

Karla, the girl who kicked the hornett's nest is not out yet but I can't wait for it to come out! It's the last book in the series and it promises to be a great one!

I have to get The girl that played with fire now. I thought the ending did drag a bit with The girl with the dragon tattoo. It's too bad Larsson died before his books were published :(
Just began The curious incident of the dog in the night time by Mark Haddon

I liked the Curious Incident of the dog. I thought it was really interesting and very educational! You'll have to tell me what you think of it!

It is incredibly sad that Larsson died before seeing his life's work come to frution. I think about that every time I pick up one of his books. I think his story should be added as an anecdote in the song "Ironic" by Morrisette. :\

message 370: by Karla (new)

Karla (bookarita) | 289 comments Its funny you talk about Morrisette's song my son was talking about how they learned about irony at school and they listened to that song during class! I have to admit Haddon's book is teaching me so much as well about Autistic YA as well as English terms.

That's how I felt! lol. I learned so much from this book. I was so intrigued by Autism that after I read the book I did a lot of research on it thanks to this book!

Must ask what a few english words mean?? In England is a garden the backyard? Jumper is a sweater or a sweatshirt?

message 374: by Karla (new)

Karla (bookarita) | 289 comments While I'm asking English terms....What is plaice? I know it's food but don't know what it is :D

message 375: by Dean (new)

Dean (cowboys86) | 122 comments Plaice is a fish. A jumper is a sweater.

Karla (bookarita) | 289 comments Jo wrote: "A garden is a backyard. Not sure what the difference is between a sweater and a sweatshirt to be honest. "

Thanks Jo! Sweater is knit out of yarn is more dressy and a sweatshirt is made out of a fleece jersey material some have a hood on the back with strings to work out in or stay warm.
So what do you call a place you grow vegetables and flowers? Is that just just called vegetable garden and flower bed? Sorry if my questions sound silly but thanks for the help :D

Karla (bookarita) | 289 comments Thank you all for your help I must have OCD I just like to know specific things!! This is so funny, but I am now better informed. I read so many books with an English main character and need to be able to picture what I'm reading instead of guessing what they mean ya know??!! I didn't even know there was a Cod shortage hmmmm....

Karla (bookarita) | 289 comments It's funny how some books just have more English terms than others. I'm learning a lot though good book.

message 387: by Dean (new)

Dean (cowboys86) | 122 comments We eat hamburgers, only they're called beefburgers over here.

message 388: by Karla (new)

Karla (bookarita) | 289 comments There are a lot of English in this group. Windscreen that is just crazy how we can all understand eachother but we do have different words for some things. I'm having fun learning these terms today!

Jessica~CoinOperatedJoy | 319 comments lol. Reading this conversation really made me laugh. Isn't it funny how different terms are depending on where you live? Jo, you and I have had the "sweat suit" conversation before so that's partially why I'm laughing.
Karla: I think you have it actually. I would call a patch of earth where there are vegetables growing a vegetable patch. What would you call it Jo? I would call a patch of earth where there are flowers (if it is small) a flower bed or, if the place is surrounded by walls with trees, an orchard. In one of the houses I grew up in we had an apple and apricot orchard behind our house. But an English garden is not quite the same thing as an American garden because (at least where I lived) the back yard was grass covered and had several plants and vegetation. My parent's home in GA had a wooded area with a long creek that led to a really dingy waterfall and then to a rather large lake. In which case I would just call that a wooded area. Holy crap! I can't believe I just went on for this long about backyards and gardens!

Karla (bookarita) | 289 comments LMFAO... Jessica that is too cute. I think I just found a new question don't laugh at me!! Ok you can if you want to. Is a pushchair a stroller and it sounds as if a quid is the same as a pound?? Gawd this book makes me sometimes feel like I'm the one with autistic thoughts! Ultimately Ill feel smarter after I finish.

A quid is just another word for a pound. Like the equivelent of "can I borrow a few dollars/some cash/some money etc."

A pushchair is another word for a pram or a baby buggy...and so on...

Totally not laughing at you...okay...just a little. ;)

message 392: by Sadie (new)

Sadie Ever since I saw Bedknobs and Broomsticks as a child I have been plagued with the mystery of Bubble and Squeak, which is apparently some kind of food?

message 393: by Jessica~CoinOperatedJoy (last edited Nov 17, 2009 08:13PM) (new)

Jessica~CoinOperatedJoy | 319 comments Bubble and Squeak is a traditional English dish made with the shallow-fried leftover vegetables from a roast dinner. The chief ingredients are potato and cabbage, but carrots, peas, brussels sprouts, and other vegetables can be added. It is traditionally served with cold meat from the Sunday roast, and pickles. Traditionally, the meat was added to the bubble and squeak itself, although nowadays it is more commonly made without meat. The cold chopped vegetables (and cold chopped meat if used) are fried in a pan together with mashed potato until the mixture is well-cooked and brown on the sides.

That is what google says but every time I ate it, it was totally different every time. It's kind of like leftovers put on a skillet...and this is GREAT HANGOVER FOOD. Yummmm...only ever had it with bangers though...no roast. Sounds good! Although it doesn't look super appetizing...it is. Sometimes it looks like..I don't know...relish? Depends on what's in it. I've had this on top of eggs and toast mostly.

message 394: by Sadie (new)

Sadie Wow! Thanks for the info Jessica, I can now sleep easy! :)

message 395: by Karla (new)

Karla (bookarita) | 289 comments I don't know about any one else but I feel like some Bubble and squeak. I guess I should get hammered first cuz relish for food doesn't sound appetizing!

and
Abhorsen

I just finished Speak and
The Maze Runner.

I LOVED those both. I had been meaning to read Speak for a loong time and finally just did it. I'd like to see the movie now and see what's different. The Maze Runner was so good, that I'm still thinking about it! No idea when the sequel will be though, which really sucks!!

I'm enjoying my two current reads, nut I'm anxious to finish Abhorsen since it's the end of the trilogy and I have Hush, Hush waiting for me! I can't stand it!

message 398: by Dean (new)

Dean (cowboys86) | 122 comments Vegetable patches are normally in allotments over here, it's rare people have garden's big enough to have one. So they have allotments somewhere near their house.

Bubble and squeak is the best! I've never had it with other veggies though, just cabbage and mashed potato... and maybe some onion.
