Emily | 48 comments Hey everyone, haven't been on this in a while... Just thought I'd throw in my two cents about the I Am Legend convo. I have read the book and seen the Will Smith movie. Agreed that they are very different. Robert Neville is a wholly different character in the two. I really enjoyed both though. I am a huge Will Smith fan and I think he did a great job, made that movie his, and really showed his range as an actor. The book was significantly less hopeful than the movie. The character is less likable and heroic. But the book is so interesting, and really explores the psychology of isolation, among other things. Really cool book. If you haven't read it, definitely do. Interaction between the Vampires and the humans is a definite plus in this story as well.

I guess since this thread is about what you are reading...I am just about to finish Day Watch, the sequel to Night Watch. Anyone read this or Night Watch?

I agree in some ways. I usually like books more than movies. My only thing in this case is that the book and movie are so different I can't even compare them. It's like two different stories with a character that has the same name. So I would have to say I enjoyed them equally and for different reasons!! :)

message 253: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn (kathry) Completely agree about the movies. I've enjoyed all three for the differences between them but the book is my favorite. The isolation in the book is definitely key.

And Adebisirocks, I love the first 2 Watch books. Really amazing reads. I plan on reading the last 2 soon but do not yet have book 3 on hand. I think I preferred Anton's point of view, which the books return to in 3 and 4.

Yeah I completely agree. I like the character Anton. Although I did enjoy story II in book II, with the whole mirror debacle. Really interesting how he wrote the perspective of that character, and how it made sense why he thought the way he did at the end of the story.

I've got it in my library and is ready to read, waiting to finish up a Braunbeck book and then I plan on starting Night Watch. So far has the journey been worth it?

Definitely. The books are broken into stories. THe first book sees stories told from the point of view of one character, while the second has changed the point of view in each story. The first book focuses more on the light side, and the second more on the dark side. While some stories are vastly better than others (IMO) the books as a whole are entertaining, and pretty quick to read. Not very complicated, although occasionally bogged down a bit with debate on the nature of good and evil. I think you'll like it!

Good to hear, maybe I'll fudge a little bit and start it early.

Lauryl | 6 comments Re: I Am Legend
I thought the Will Smith film was mostly pretty awful (A review I wrote, if anyone's interested: http://mslaurylsulfate.livejournal.com/)

...but that has less to do with it not resembling the novella and more to do with it being an awful movie. I never mind a film moving far from its source material as long as its a good film.

The novella was great, although I generally have mixed feelings about Richard Matheson. Hell House was awful. Mathson is definitely interesting, but more as a relic of early 20th century white manhood being threatened by the cultural revolution of the 60's. I Am Legend can be read as a reactionary novel in a lot of ways.

Anne I finished The Lightning Thief last night. Thought it was good enough to add to my kids "future" reading collection.

The book series is very good, he's got another one coming out soon! The first season and book 1 follow each other pretty close until the end, and then the series takes a few story plots from the books and changes them. Essentially they are two different story lines, but I enjoy both. The novel Dexter is darker than the TV show Dexter.

It's really good, violent though. Cormac McCarthy is such a great writer.

message 280: by Harriet (new)

Harriet | 81 comments I'm reading 'Portrait of an Unknown Woman' by Vanora Bennett at the moment. I love historical fiction, but this is the first of Bennett's novels I've read. It's set in the household of Thomas More in 1527 and includes Hans Holbein amongst it's cast. I'm really enjoying it so far. I normally read Philippa Gregory when I need a Tudor-fiction-fix, but this seems like it could easily be as good as any of hers!

I read it when I was younger but I am re-reading it because it's creepy and I like to scare myself about this time of year. :) I wish I could listen to it in the car! That would totally make my commute to work sooo much better!

It's going good so far. This is the first time I've read it. It has switched narration three times so far, but it is not confusing. It starts off with one character, then switches to the thoughts of the creator, and now I'm reading the part narrated by the monster.

I'll be sure to post in the Frankenstein thread when I'm finished. :)

I've heard this book is real good. You should probably try it. I have it on my TBR, but I have no idea when I will get to it, but I hope sooner than later.
