After reading it you should watch the dramatisation of it with Colin Firth

Brilliant!!

Jason Clay (goodreadscomwillshakespeare) | 74 comments Just finished solar and it was brilliant, the end was well worth waiting for. Funny and tragic and full of bathos and moralistic a book that I would recommend to anyone and everyone !!!

Donna (dfiggz) I am now reading 2 books:

No Way Out and The Street of a Thousand Blossoms

message 1061: by Gitte (new)

Gitte (gittetofte) I'm about half-way throug The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I find it entertaining, but I'm not crazy about it.

message 1062: by Shane (new)

Shane (Shaneybobs) | 80 comments Quite a short book but quite dense. I've attempted to read it about three times. Let me know how you get on.

Shane (Shaneybobs) | 80 comments Dunno what it is with Joseph Conrad, I know the stories are really great, but I just find him so hard to read. I read 'Nigger of the Narcissus' one time at found it a real slog. I much preferred Jack London. The Sea Wolf is really good but it gets kinda slow in the middle. Still, I s'pose the Victorians/Edwardians had nowt better to do apart from go the Music Hall once in while, play shove ha'penny. LOL

message 1065: by Shane (new)

Shane (Shaneybobs) | 80 comments Apparently, Moby Dick got a really bad review at the time 'cos it was too wordy and it's a squillion pages long. So you can imagine what that's like!

message 1066: by Shane (new)

Shane (Shaneybobs) | 80 comments I think i'm gonna attempt to read Tom Sawyer again soon as I need to read more classics. Have you Jo, or anyone out there got any opinions/pointers on this book?

message 1067: by Shane (new)

Shane (Shaneybobs) | 80 comments I read Bartleby the Scrivener (by Melville, last year because I had an experience with an assitant that was remarkably similar. That was pretty wordy too but it's only a novella. I'd recommend that.

I read Bartleby the Scrivener: A Story of Wall Street some years ago and really liked it! Really entertaining, but so sad underneath... I found it impossible, however, to finish Moby-Dick - only managed about 100 pages or so.

message 1070: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sarah23l) I just started reading Interview With the Vampire last night, and I'm a little over halfway through Voyager, the third book of the Outlander series.

Shane (Shaneybobs) | 80 comments Finished The Gorse Trilogy last night and started London Belongs to Me on the train this morning. Another long read but it looks quite promising.

message 1074: by Leslie (new)

Leslie Shimotakahara (lshimo) I am at the midpoint of The Girl Who Played with Fire. It's rivetting and the characters are surprisingly complex! Lisbeth Salander is more than just a super hero - she's an injured soul who has managed to transform her childhood victimization into a source of strength. My full review can be read at: www.the-reading-list.com

Afsana, Shelli recommended the same version. My girlfriend (a huge Austen and P&P fan) gave me that version to watch. I'm so glad it's the one that my GR friends are recommending as well. When I watch, likely over the weekend as I understand it's about 4 hours, I will post!

Little stranger is getting quite creepy and compelling. Nearly gave up on it, but I am really into it now.

I'm really sorry to hear about the Bookclub....I tried once as well but it didn't come to anything either but then luckily a friend put mr onto Goodreads and so here I am...
I'm glad you setting to THE LITTLE STRANGER I really enjoyed it and would be up for a discussion if you'd like?
Happy Reading.

Gitte (gittetofte) I just started Ursula Hegi's Floating in My Mother's Palm, and I like it so far. It's my second book by Hegi. The first one I read was Salt Dancers which I found beautiful, so there are expectations for this one :-)

Dani H (pentopaperreads) | 14 comments I'm currently reading one I got off the giveaways section on goodreads. It's a firstreads one - No Way Out by David Kessler. I started it last night and have read around 50 pages or so before going to sleep. It's really good so far.
About to go and read some more :)

Jason Clay (goodreadscomwillshakespeare) | 74 comments Hi DJ the house in little stranger is a active character in the story now. Wish the Doctor and Caroline would get together ! Hope they do eventually. See Hundreds falling victim to a major fire at the end. Is the titular little stranger Mrs Ayres first child ? is she the evil that haunts the house ? Please don't tell me anything that will spoil the story for me.

DJ (djdivaofjava) | 659 comments Hmmm I have views on the way this all goes....To be honest I think I would be better to discuss it with you when you've finished, purely so I don't accidently give anything away......
How about I open a thread for it over on the DJ Adventures to keep it separate from our McEwan threads here?

Jo I hope you won't be offended by my suggestion? Its just I have read a lot of her work and plan to read more and I seem to find it easier if certain Authors are Kept to different groups......

Gitte, I recently read Stones from the River by Hegi and I loved it. Can't wait to hear what you think of Floating in my Mother's Palm. I think she's an amazing writer and I'm anxious to read more of her books.

Diane (dianedj) I am reading The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy It's a re-read actually, but since I've forgotten many details of the story I am enjoying it as though it were my first time reading it.

ms.petra (mspetra) | 39 comments Jo wrote: "I think i will give Moby Dick a miss then. I'm not a fan of wordy!"

Jo I liked Heart of Darkness, but I like those personal journey themes.
I also found Moby Dick far too wordy and barely made it half way through.

message 1087: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Read an edited version of Moby Dick. That's a good read. The 75 or 100 pages in the middle of an unedited version is all about rendering a whale - well worth missing.
