I watched the first 5 or so episodes of the tv show first, so I think that's why I could get into the books so easily. I already loved certain characters from tv, so it was easier to like them on the page too. I think that if I hadn't seen the way the tv show portrays Elena first then I probably would have hated her to start with. They seem to be changing quite a bit of the books.

Harriet | 81 comments Jo wrote: "Yeah i hated her in the book. It seems like you did it the right way!"

Yeh I definitely think I did! But she does get nicer as the books go on. For all the similarities between them and Twilight, Elena starts as like the complete opposite to Bella. Can't someone find a happy medium?!

DJ (djdivaofjava) | 659 comments Started EMPIRE OF THE SUN yesterday.Going well so far.

message 821: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Unfortunately, I ended up giving up on Extras as it doesn't make sense to me and I wasn't getting anywhere with it.

So now I will read A Theory of Relativity.

They died instantly.

Or close enough.

Gordon, of course, knew that "instantly" in this context, didn't mean what it seemed to suggest. Several minutes would have passed inside the car after the impact, while the final tick and swoosh of Ray's and Georgia's heart-sent blood swept a pointless circuit, while muscles contracted loyally at the behest of a last volley of neurological commands. But there would have been no awareness, or only a few twilight seconds - and no memory.

DJ (djdivaofjava) | 659 comments Hi Jason there is nothing wrong in being a Geek a colleague and I were having that very discussion a couple of weeks ago.....

Have to confess that for today I have stopped reading Empire of the Sun and Picked up Daphne du Maurier A Daughters Memoir by Flavia Leng ad I was at a rather graphic description of food shortages and Husband had taken me out fo a beautiful 3 Course lunch with Wine and coffee to and my conscience kept pricking at me so I had two options do not read or pick up something cheerful....The rest as they say is history.

message 830: by Sadie (new)

Sadie Jo,
I liked Van Alen Legacy but I feel like her story is getting too conviluted. Let me know what you think. I read it thinking that it was the last in the series....not so. Now the wait begins.

Dean (cowboys86) | 122 comments I started Chainfire, getting close to the end of this long series now. I'm glad it's almost over. I haven't been doing too well this month for reading, I've been ill and I've not felt like picking up a book for a while.

That series is decent, but too strung out in my opinion. Personally I think the Wheel of Time series does a better job of keeping people interested (& confused). Hope you feel better and enjoy the rest of the series.

message 845: by Amelia (new)

Amelia James (prosegirl) | 2 comments I have just finnished reading SLIDE by new author Saira Viola it is savagely funny and Slide, A Modern Satire on the Excess of Greed by Saira Viola Slide A Modern Satire on the Excess of Greed reveals a city landscape that is in moral meltdown . The story is bursting with humour , intellect and destructive beauty If you check out my books I cover lots of genres . This is a rare gem a new author who breaks with literary convention and seduces the reader into her world with language and style .

message 846: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (mcounts) I am currently reading Dracula, though it is taking me some time to get thru for some reason but it is amazing!! Very suspenseful and his imagery is creative. Though the wording can be complex and I think the amount of focus it takes to wrap yourself in his writing style exhaust you after 10 pages, so I can't accomplish too much in one sitting.

message 847: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm currently reading the Well & The Mine by Gin Phillips

Jason Clay (goodreadscomwillshakespeare) | 74 comments Just finished The Gathering by Ann Enright. Its a very moving and powerful look at memories and the past loves and life of those in and out of families. In a way its disturbing but I would say its spiritually enriching too.
