My absolute favorite of the Sookie books!

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I'm reading the second of Harris' Lily Bard series now. It's pretty good, no paranormal anything, just straight murder mysteries like her Aurora Teagarden. Lily is tougher, a lot more scarred by life, though. She doesn't whine about it as much as Harper, thank goodness.

message 603: by Dean (new)

Dean (cowboys86) | 122 comments I started reading Pirate Latitudes by Michael Crichton the other day. I bought it and couldn't resist starting it, so I've put Soul of the Fire temporarily on hold while I get through this.

message 604: by Maddie (new)

Maddie (showjumperpro) Just finished The Hero and the Crown and now I'm reading Dead Until Dark.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I'm starting another Lily Bard. Just finished the Xmas one last night.

I'm finished with Dead To The World and I agree that it's the best one so far. I'll probably go back and re-read this one when I'm finished with the series. I never really liked Eric until now! :)

I'm now reading The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins and just starting Dead As A Doornail by Charlaine Harris.

I loved it! Thank you for asking! I didn't think it was AMAZING but still very good. I couldn't put it down and finished in two days. She hooked me from page one! It was written very well and I can't wait to read the second one. Let me know how you like Need. I've been wanting to read that one, too.

Emmeviene | 3 comments I'm reading Snow by Orhan Pamuk and the Fountainhead by Ayn Rand. Anybody here have read those books? let me know you're thoughts on them. Thanks!

message 616: by Donna (new)

Donna (dfiggz) I read The Foutainhead some time ago but I remember having mixed feelings.

message 617: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I've read several of Ayn Rand's books including The Fountainhead & Atlas Shrugged, which is a sequel. They're interesting, but very idealistic. The romance is odd; very logical, with extreme overtones of passion. She's very much into personal responsibility.

Overall, they're well written & the language is very readable, unlike much of her nonfiction, where she seems to revel in using a $5 words. (English was not her native language & I think she liked rubbing our noses in the fact that her command of it was better.) There, her precision in the usage of words & the level of vocabulary means that even I have to resort to a dictionary more often than I'd like. She was a very smart lady. They're still worth reading. Her The Virtue of Selfishness is quite interesting & well worth reading.

She wasn't a Libertarian, but often confused with them & shared, IMO, a lot of the same blind spots. Still, she makes a lot of good points. You can find some interesting talks of hers (West Point graduation, invasion of Czechoslovakia, PBS interviews) at archive.org for free. They're worth listening to, as well.

I tried reading THE FOUNTAINHEAD & ATLAS SHRUGGED some years ago. Decided I didn't like being beaten over the head with Rand's politics and her too superior writing voice.

message 620: by Natasha (new)

Natasha (tasha_13) I'm Reading the Hunger Games.

message 621: by Donna (new)

Donna (dfiggz) Started my other ARC Paulo Coelho: A Warrior's Life - The Authorized Biography. I am onoly 1 chapter in so it is hard to say what I feel.

Started Pride and Prejudice on Saturday.

Dean (cowboys86) | 122 comments I just started Faith of the Fallen, but after this I'm taking a break from The Sword of Truth series. Thinking about picking up Le Morte D'Arthur: King Arthur and the Legends of the Round Table and Empire of the Sun as I've wanted to read both for a while now.

SoT is a good series, but suffers from the long winded story line most epic series do. I had to put it down for a few months in order to finish the series.

DJ (djdivaofjava) | 659 comments I'm halfway through ME TALK PRETTY ONE DAY by David Sedaris.I have to say I am so far quite disappointed in it as I was expecting it to be really funny and at the moment I am finding it to be a piece of narcacistic self indulgence into his past.On the strength of this book I very much doubt that I will read anything else by him.
But I'll see how it ends....

Christy (TheReaderBee) (thereaderbee) | 32 comments I am reading The Awakening by Kelley Armstrong and Dear John by Nicholas Sparks at the moment. Both are really good!

I was disappointed, too. I didn't even finish the book.

I've heard a lot about the "A Song of Ice and Fire" series. Are you enjoying them so far? :)

I just started The Book Thief. I really like the narration and I'm liking it so far.

They are so freakin' good it's unbelievable!! There has never been a boring part; chapters vary from the view points of a variety of characters, and in each chapter something exciting and unexpected happens! It's impossible to predict anything and even the main characters are subject to death. It makes other books and series feel disappointing after reading this series!
...I recommend it!

message 640: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Since I last posted I have read Megan's Way - Melissa Foster and have just finished Scaredy Cat - Mark Billingham, Will now try and read Housewife In Love - Alison Penton Harper.

I loved HER FEARFUL SYMMETRY I think you'll have fun....
Natalee thanks for the comment :-)

message 646: by Nadia (new)

Nadia A (bagambo) Karla and DJ - thanks! I'm so looking forward to this book, that its good to know that I won't be disappointed. I just started it last night and so far I am really enjoying it!

I also started to read To Kill A Mockingbird and that book is really good so far.

message 647: by Karla (new)

Karla (bookarita) | 289 comments Nadia HFS is a hard book to recommend cause you have to be able to think outside the box and not get hung up on the unrealistic nature of things and just have fun if you can look past that you well adore it and walk away with characters you well like as well.
After all nobody knows what is gonna happen when we die its personal for us all.

message 648: by Nadia (last edited Jan 21, 2010 07:00AM) (new)

Nadia A (bagambo) Thanks Karla for the heads up. I love books that dabble in magical realism, so I'm looking forward to reading a book where I have to just dive in and not question anything and just take things at face value. Should be fun! Cheers!!

By the by, I do agree that death is personal for all of us and what we believe happens is for each of us to figure out.
