I just finished Graceling and now I'm reading Fire. I LOVED Graceling. Fire is just as good but totally different.

I'm going to be starting that soon. Can't wait! City of Bones was really good."

I really liked the first book! And I've heard the rest of the series is even better.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I'm re-reading Jack of Shadows by Roger Zelazny now. Wow! What a fantastic book.

I finished Red-Headed Stepchild over the weekend. I hope the next book is better. I didn't find the heroine very believable. She's older than me & reminds me of a teenager.

message 506: by Donna (new)

Donna (dfiggz) I will be done reading Rant by the end of the work day. I thus will start Zipporah Wife of Moses on my ride home.

This is my first Lancaster book She seems like a real jerk here in the beginning jez! I'm not very far in yet though.

That's just her humor. You may not enjoy her books if you don't like that kind of humor. I like her sense of humor...but I can see where other people would think she's obnoxious. Her second book, Bright Lights, Big Ass A Self-Indulgent, Surly, Ex-Sorority Girl's Guide to Why it Often Sucks in the City, or Who are These Idiots and Why Do They All Live Next Door to Me? is actually my favorite of hers. I thought it was the funniest of all.

Karla (bookarita) | 289 comments I get her humor it is funny and full of sarcasm. I'm like that in my own secret way just know better than to say some stuff to a person's face...I'd be a loner then!

I didn't like RED-HEADED STEPCHILD either, Jim. Didn't like the main character. I've also come to the conclusion that books that deal pretty much with just the fae don't do a thing for me.

message 514: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I like the paranormal-urban fantasies, as a general rule. I like kick-ass heroines, too. My daughter & I both read a lot of them, although we don't always agree on how good they are.

I don't like 53 year old ladies that act like my daughter would or super assassins that are completely ignorant of so many important details that everyone else knows. My daughter is 20 & wouldn't be as oblivious or act like this chick did, though. She would have been asking hard questions 30 years ago, at least.

I can swallow a lot of strange ideas in a fantasy world. I can make some allowances for the way she was brought up, the aging rate of her species & such, but it still wasn't logical. That's what it was! Lack of internal consistency & logic!!! (Sheesh! I've been trying to put that thought into words since I was 50 pages into the book.)

Still, now that the idiot child is somewhat up to speed, there may be hope for the second book. I felt like a lot of her ignorance was due to trying to explain the world in an action packed way.

Oooh, I love that series. Isnt Jace just so... irritating at times but so... sexy? Lol.

There's going to be more books after City of Glass(book 3), but it's going to take place before the time of the characters in Mortal Instruments, except for a few :)

message 521: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm really not reading anything, except Huck Finn for school, none of the books I have and haven't read yet are really jumping out at me... So I went to the library last night and got Gerald's Game and Four Past Midnight by Stephen King, Midnight by Dean Koontz, and The Ruins by Scott Smith

message 525: by [deleted user] (new)

Was City of Bones written in first-person? Because for some reason City of Ashes seems like really weird when I'm reading it. I feel disconnected...

Anyways I started Midnight by Dean Koontz, today.

Lisa S (kasey_k_fan) Right now I'm reading The Trophy Exchange A Lucinda Pierce Mystery and loving it.
Levi have you started Gerald's Game yet? I read it a while back and really liked it.

I didn't like BLUE MOON, mostly because I wanted to slap Ever about every other page. This one was no different. Ever NEVER learns.....anything! The story goes nowhere. It doesn't advance the tale along at all. They tread water the whole time and when the book ends they are right where they were when BLUE MOON ended. The book has more 1 star reviews on Amazon than any other grade.

Anyways, I'm reading The Vampire Armand. Not really liking it all that much, I think this will probably be it for the Vampire Chronicles for me after this. It's gotten progressively worse after Queen of the Damned.

message 540: by Maddie (last edited Dec 13, 2009 03:27PM) (new)

Maddie (showjumperpro) Just finished Catching Fire and now reading Maximum Ride: The Angel Experiment. Catching Fire was excellent!!

I just finished Fallen. It was good but I would wait for the 2nd book to come out before reading it. It just leaves you with too many unanswered questions.

message 542: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I've been reading Quarry novels by Max Allan Collins. They're really good, fast reads. More candy books, but Hard Case Crime types. I was surprised when I looked him up on Fantastic Fiction just how many novels he's written. Tons of novelizations for CSI, Bones, Batman, Waterworld (which I have) plus various series of true crime & he finished several of Mickey Spillane's novels.

Haven't read Armand yet. I loved up through Body Thief...but Memnoch came off as excruciatingly self-absorbed on her part. It was only interesting about 20% of the time. I plan on giving Armand a go at some point. Its been a while since I read Anne Rice though.

You read the witch books though? I enjoyed them a lot. Again though by the third though... the ending was a bit of a let down for me. It's like she got lazy or something.

Max is definitely prolific! He doesn't do the CSI books anymore and they're nowhere near as good as they were when he was doing them. He only did one book based on the Bones series. I liked it whereas I really don't like the original books by Kathy Reichs that the show is actually based on. He also had a short series of books that revolved around real life disasters that had authors of the time involved in solving the case. They involved the Titanic, the Lusitania, the Hindenburg and others.

I just got Interview with the Vampire on PBS. I love Anne Rice, so I'm looking forward to reading it. I loved the movie when it came out, so I'm sure the book is probably as good as, or better than, the movie.
