Did anyone happen to see the titles of the two books shown in last night's episode? The one that was brought to Ben and the one that Sawyer was reading?

I have the two books with the help of other LOSTies.

The first book that Locke brings Ben (from his own bookshelf and Locke says to read again to see if he overlooked something):

VALIS (Vast Active Living Intelligence System) by Philip K. Dick. It seems to be a deep metaphysical/spiritual tome made ficiton novel in conversation form. Has elements of Christianity, Gnostic, Buddhism etc.

The Second book Sawyer was reading (great to see the guy reading again) is:

"The Invention of Morel" by Aldofo Bioy Caseras. It is a novel about a fugitive who hides on an Island when tourists arrive and he is afraid of being discovered. When falls in love with one of the tourists but some "anomalous phenomenon" keeps them apart. Make's sense why Sawyer was reading this.

Tulara (iberostar) Thanks so much for posting the books from the last episode. It rocked me that Kate had Claire's baby (or is it?) and that Jack won't see the baby for some reason. Was it his fault that Claire died? Or is it just being angry that his father had another family in Australia. I love to see Sawyer reading so much - and those glasses!!

message 6: by Arctic (new)

Arctic Yeah thanks for posting these books Vangelic. really interesting tie-ins. any plans to do group readings of the books mentioned?

Janice, do we know for sure that Claire died?

Janice,

I know. That ending shocked me. I didn't expect it. I hope Claire is still alive. I'll be interested to see when and how Jack finds out about his sister Clarie. Yeah, Sawyer's glasses crack me up, but I would wear anything as well if I had to just to read. Even weird glasses.

Arctic,

That has been an idea I have been batting around about the books on here. There has been a huge amount of new members to the group since the new season started. I'll start a new thread to see who is interested and what books could be considered.

Justin (ralieghfingers) the invention of morel is a great book. very similar style to lost, i was psyched to see it featured.

its also interesting to note that that particular edition (nyrb reissue) only came out a couple of years ago, so they must have access to new books.

Exactly Justin. Amazon must deliever there. :)

message 10: by Tulara (new)

Tulara (iberostar) Artic, you are right - she might not be dead - but I guess I couldn't see her parting with Aaron any other way - but as Charley was with Hurley at the asylum and he's dead - who knows what can happen!! I want to know why Kate has him and he calls her Mommy.

Brian (nebulosity) | 4 comments Thanks for posting the two books Ted, sadly my to-read list is growing and growing. I can't keep up! :(

No problem Brian. Yes, I know the problem of too many books to read. In a sense it is a good problem, but still a problem. :)

message 13: by Howard (new)

Howard (howardmittelmark) Hey, folks. Just joined goodreads and was surprised to find this group here. I'm glad I did, because I didn't recognize that second book. So thanks.

I've read VALIS, and have something to add on that. PKD wrote VALIS when he had already gone around the bend. It's a fictionalized version of what he actually believed happened to him.

He believed there was an entity in orbit, the Vast Active Living Intelligence System, which beamed a great deal of information into his head, and revealed to him that he was still living in the days of the Roman Empire, a member of the underground persecuted sect of early Christians. The modern world, and everything that had happened since around 100 AD, was an illusion. "The Empire Never Ended" was one of the key phrases. (Or something like that; it's been twenty years since I read it.)

So, I wonder if they aren't suggesting that the island is itself a vast, active, living intelligence system, which would be pretty much what Locke has believed all along.

I don't want to take it too far, but maybe there are false histories involved, too, and the original Empire on the island never ended.

Howard,

That is interesting. Thanks for your insight. We are lucky to find someone who has read some of these books that are a bit out of the norm. Sounds like a trippy book.

Your theory is interesting. That could be. The Island is a major Character or "the character" in last and plays a huge role in the mystery. That it would have such a mystical/sci-fi intelligent force is not out of the question.

Welcome to Goodreads and welcome to the LOST bookclub!

-Ted.

message 15: by Howard (new)

Howard (howardmittelmark) Thanks, Ted.

Looking forward to tonight's show.

I've been hoping that they'd stick to sf and avoid the mystical; that is, that there was a rational explanation for everything, ultimately. But that's seeming less and less likely.

Lori (tnbbc) So I have two books to add to my To Buy shelf now... VALIS and Invention Of Morel.... Both sound too good to pass on.

I am amazed at the amount of book tie-ins this show has... weather its a matter of naming the episodes after one, or placing one into the characters hands. Nothing is done accidently on this show. Each character was named for a reason. (Jack Shepard was taken from the movie Frequency, which, non-coincedently, i am hearing is where Kates Lawyer starred, and has to do with time traveling in a sense.) Rousseau (sp?) is a french scientist or something... Each book has a link to the theories and identity of the island and the characters on it....

It can make you downright obsessive....

message 17: by Cassie (new)

Cassie | 7 comments Actually, Lori, Rousseau shares her name with the French philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau. His most famous writing is "Social Contract" which describes the state of nature as without law or morality. It's pretty interesting, and very influential on the political structure we have now.

Oh, but if we are talking about time travel -- yes, Danielle Rousseau is a french scientist. In a deleted scene, I guess someone asked her what they were studying, and she responded with "time"

message 18: by Lori (new)

Lori (tnbbc) ahhhh. thats what i was thinking, a french philospher. I can never keep all the histories of the names straight. Locke is named after someone famous as well.... It is really interesting the way the writers put this all together, and keep the fans researching and pulling apart theories... I love to read everyones take on everything.

message 19: by [deleted user] (new)

Lori, John Locke shares his name with the british philosopher who insisted that the mind at birth is a "blank slate". I know because i am studying Psychology in college.
