For those Star Trek readers...may I also suggest The Fifty-Year Mission: The Complete, Uncensored, Unauthorized Oral History of Star Trek: The First 25 Years and The Fifty-Year Mission: The Next 25 Years: From The Next Generation to J. J. Abrams: The Complete, Uncensored, and Unauthorized Oral History of Star Trek. TAS is considered a continuation of TOS by most serious fans. It wasn't at all Kiddie, was written by some of the same writers as the original series and had most of the original cast doing the voice work for their characters.

Well, I did enjoy reading Star Trek: Log One, though I have no recollection of what it was about at this stage. A good sign about it is that it was authored by Alan Dean Foster.

The 2 books I mentioned aren't Star Trek Stories...they are the Story of Star Trek in itself. It's the story behind the story.
Swarm by Frank Schatzing. I started it in February, dropped it and started it again last night. Seems like I had stopped reading right before an extremely interesting turn of events.
I'm trying to read Peripheral by Gibson.I'm finding it a bit too hard going to be honest. I cannot pinpoint why as the ideas are sold as is the writing but I'm finding it hard to give a s**t about any of the characters and its just not grabbing my attention at all.
The shame of this is I am a huge William Gibson fan but thus far its a massive pile of meh.

Intrigued about the 'extremely interesting turn of events.' :P

I haven't read any of Gibson's recent books yet. I've heard that they are less science-fiction-focused as his earlier ones. Is this the case?

The Last couple I read (Pattern Recognition and Virtual light) were certainly set in a more immediate future. This book is back to Sci-fi but appears to have left accessibility behind.
I enjoyed Virtual Light but read it ages ago now. I bought Pattern Recognition but haven't read it yet - must rectify that!
Currently reading Brain Recyclers by J.S. Morin
I was going to do housework and coursework this weekend...honest! But I thought I'd finish reading The Sea and Summer (AKA Drowning Towers) first.......and then, well I thought I'd download something to treat myself with later. I only meant to read the first couple of pages, a primer if you will.....And, well, I have mostly been reading Red Mars. It's awfully good!
I usually keep my reading records in one area on Goodreads. My read books this year thus far are located at the third post on the page linked at: 2017 Currently reading from the GR SciFi-Fan Book Club.
My currently reading list is located on the second message for the following location linked at, the second message on at the following link: Non- Goodreads Sci-Fi/ Fan Book Club books, including both some sci-fi and mostly other genre books.

That's reasonable, Richard. I list all my read books and short fiction on Horror Aficionados' annual lists but I mention my current reads across a few groups of which I'm a member, sometimes tailored to the genre of the group concerned.
Incidentally, my current sci-fi read is Snow Crash - nearing the half-way mark.

Hi, just starting When Gods War: Roman Candle. This was one of the choices in the latest poll for book of the month that wasn't chosen. Since I didn't really know where to go with the Lovecraft option, I decided to strike out on this one in the meantime because it really does look like something I would enjoy. If anyone else is reading/ has read the book, I'm interested in ideas , thoughts, or info about.
Just finished Altered Carbon. Oh my! At first I thought: this is just a detective story set in the future....and essentially, it is but it’s a galloping, action packed whopper of detective thriller and I’m going in for more!!!
Mel wrote: "Just finished Altered Carbon. Oh my! Netflix has done a series based upon it, it is supposed to drop next year sometime.
I'm reading World Seed: Game Start, the first in the series, at the moment. I haven't decided about how I like it yet, but it still has my attention so far. It seems almost allegorical in some ways... like with the idea of becoming absorbed in tech to the point of becoming digitized.
Started reading 'The Dreams in the Witch House', which was collected in At the Mountains of Madness and Other Novels of Terror .

That's a book I need to get around to reading soon. Glad to read that you enjoyed it, Mel!

I got Ready Player One for Christmas. I'm about 2/3 of the way through and it is a lot more fun than I expected it to be.
Gav451 wrote: "I got Ready Player One for Christmas. I'm about 2/3 of the way through and it is a lot more fun than I expected it to be."I realy enjoyed it I don't usually read dystopia but my scifi reading group has pushed me from my comfort zone. I'm hoping the movie does the book justice.
Started reading Ready Player One for a buddy read and I'm wondering why I left this book on my TBR shelf for nearly 5 years before getting around to reading it! It's quite fun so far.
currently reading Code Breakers: Prequel , pretty good so far.
Finished “The Reality Dysfunction” by Hamilton and “Blackout” by Willis last week. Now reading “All Clear” by Willis and “Ancillary Justice” by Leckie.
I also dip into my growing collection of “Year’s Best Science Fiction” anthologies as time permits.

That sounds disappointing. How far are you into the book?

LOL Just when you thought about giving it up, it gets interesting!

It's not science-fiction as such but a collection of essays and speeches by a science-fiction author - William Gibson's Distrust That Particular Flavor. Interesting musings.
I’m reading House of Suns, on page 87 and completely hooked! How did the Gentian line come to be, what happened to the Andromida system, what do the curators of the Vigilance know, what is Hesperus’ real mission, how are they all connected and what the hell is up with Dr Menex? There’s no going back....I’m fully immersed :)
Still reading one of September's group reads - The Technician - which I'm enjoying, but various other distractions have slowed the pace of my reading.
This is post 201, and my first in some time. My reading time has been split between several groups all reading things of interest to me. I have also been captured by a long time history research project with new topics and works that are haunting me, and begging for my attention.

I think we all have that problem of having our attention diverted by other groups that we joined, Richard! The history project sounds interesting - I have some on the go myself. Don't feel bad if you don't get to post as much as you would like though - an occasional post is better than no post. :)

Currently dipping into Analog Science Fiction and Fact May/June 2019 while reading other books. So far, I particularly liked Cynthia Ward's and Guy Stewart's stories.
Kirsten #NeverAgainIsNow wrote: "I just started reading Aftershocks by Marko Kloos. I read the first 1/4 just during dinner!"
Looks interesting and, from what you say, a good read so far!

No, I haven't read any of the books in that series (yet, anyway). Do you remember if the one that you read was good?"
I recall enjoying it at the time I read it but I have so little recollection of the three stories in it I can't honestly say whether it would make good reading now or not.
David wrote: "They seem to be readily available for short money in the States (http://www.thriftbooks.com/browse/?b....), but perhaps not in Ireland or the rest of Europe."
Thanks for the link, David. I'll take a look. I might not buy any of the later books just yet but it will be interesting to see what's available there.
David wrote: "I never saw the animated TV series, either. Was it well done?"
I don't think I ever saw it - perhaps a stray episode at some time? I guess it'll be a bit juvenile but it should be close to TOS in style at least.
