Amanda Bilney | 288 comments I'm going to read Slaughterhouse-Five for task 2. Kurt Vonnegut and this book seem to be mentioned in lots of books I have read recently, so I need to see what all the fuss is about.

CFDeeDee I think I only have one book that fits into my task #2 which is The Book Thief .. I also have The Gunslinger I've read a part of it but never got to finish it, not sure if I could try to read it for the challenge !

Overbooked ✎ (kiwi_fruit) I think I got it.

Cassandra Blatchford | 26 comments Thanks, I've worked mine out. Now I have to find a book. Well done, what an awesome way to give a challenge. love it.

message 211: by [deleted user] (new)

I would like to participate

message 212: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments Kelly, you've been assigned task 2. We now have 2 Kelly's, so will need an initial or some other identifier for your wall of fame (where your badges are posted).

message 213: by [deleted user] (last edited Oct 04, 2015 11:18AM) (new)

My profile is set to display Kelly B. Not sure why it is not.

I went with Pines by Blake Crouch.

message 214: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments Super, I'll add you as Kelly B then. :)

message 215: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Janice, I am a little confused about your amendment to the first post in the reporting thread regarding the book we choose. The given task is not enough - the book has to relate to us personally some how? Like the title or author or country or something like that?

I already started my book based on my task but there is absolutely nothing in it, on it or anything related that applies to me (except that I wanted to read it and bought it before the challenge was announced). Do I need to choose another book?

message 216: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments The theme is "all about you", and the tasks are designed around that. So, part of the task is to tell us a bit about you. Be creative.

message 217: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments LOL! Okay, I will think of something. :0)

message 218: by Emily (new)

Emily (emilserv) | 490 comments Can I still join?

message 219: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19143 comments I think I'm going with Between Shades of Gray for my challenge. I still have a couple others as backups, but that one appeals to me the most right now.

message 220: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments Emily, you have task 3. :)

message 221: by Vicki (new)

Vicki | 1538 comments I was given task 5. I'm either reading A House in the Sky A House in the Sky by Amanda Lindhout or The Truth Teller The Truth Teller by Katherine Govier .

message 222: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments Do you need the fruit machine to decide Vicki?

message 223: by Joan (new)

Joan I'll be reading Joan of Arc: Her Story for task #1

message 224: by Cassandra (new)

Cassandra Blatchford | 26 comments I have task 1 and I'm reading The Apricot Colonel.

We even have that commercial over here :)

message 227: by Janice, Moderator (last edited Oct 09, 2015 07:10AM) (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments There's a commercial?

Never mind. I had to go back and read my original comment. I haven't had my coffee yet this morning either. Must stop doing that. It used to be that I would head straight to the coffee pot before I did anything else. Now, I start reading and replying. It's such a disadvantage.

Vicki | 1538 comments Janice wrote: "Do you need the fruit machine to decide Vicki?"

Nope. I've changed my mind as always and will now be reading When Everything Feels Like the Movies. It will be my first book for the toppler.

message 229: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments I forgot to tell you all I decided on A Guide to the Birds of East Africa for my task. And randomly I found out the guy lives in my city too. So that was a pleasant surprise.

I found a bio that even said "Nicholas lives in Canberra where he writes and paints houses." I do need a house painter...

message 230: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments Rusalka, the stalker. hehehe

message 231: by Thing Two (new)

Thing Two (thingtwo) I have no idea what this all means. I just want to read a book for my challenge. This is too challenging for my poor head.

Oh, by the way, did I tell y'all I'm managing a bookstore now? I barely have time to read anything!!!! lol

message 232: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments I'd be spending my wages on books! Are you enjoying it, Thing Two?

Do you want me to assign a task?

message 234: by Tejas Janet (last edited Oct 13, 2015 08:50PM) (new)

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments I'm enjoying The Good Good Pig: The Extraordinary Life of Christopher Hogwood. It's a pretty fun read and very sweet.

message 235: by Joan (new)

Joan Godon= Englishman a slang term from 15th century France because Englishmen "to French ears seemed constantly to repeat the expetive Goddamn" p 128 Joan of Arc: Her Story

I am reading this for task #1 because well my name is Joan too and I always meant to learn about her.

The book is dense but I am working my way through.

Can any Francophones answer two questions:
1. How common are words starting with X - Joan of Arc fought alongside Poton De Xaintrailles. My very old French-English dictionary did not list any words starting with X.

2. What do you call a person from Burgundy? Burgundian? Bourguignon? Burgundione?

message 236: by Joan (new)

Joan Tejas Janet wrote: "I'm enjoying The Good Good Pig: The Extraordinary Life of Christopher Hogwood. It's a pretty fun read and very sweet."

Christopher Hogwood sounds like Arnold Ziffel - a character remembered only by Americans of a certain age and from a period of American television that is best forgotten, still I enjoyed Green Acres at the time.

message 237: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Oh Joan, that made me laugh so much! I thought of Arnold when I read about Christopher too. I can still song all the words to the theme song for Green Acres. Can you?

message 238: by Tejas Janet (new)

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments I hadn't thought about Arnold from Green Acres in ages! What a great character he was. The show had its moments. Thank you for posting about making this association, Joan. Now, I'm suddenly thinking about other shows from the same era - like Petticoat Junction, The Beverly Hillbillies, Leave it to Beaver, Bewitched, My Three Sons, The Munsters, The Flinstones, and of course Gilligan's Island. Omg, I watched way too much t.v. in my childhood.

Cherie, I remember the theme song well tho probably can't sing it entirely accurately, just a close approximation :) Ditto with Gilligan's Island theme song.

message 239: by Casceil (new)

Casceil | 2728 comments The Green Acres theme song was extremely catchy. The other theme song that still haunts me is The Beverly Hillbillies, brought to you by the folks who also bring to you, Winston Cigarette. Hard to believe there was a time when there were so many cigarette ads on TV.

message 240: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Yes,TJ, all the shows I grew up watching too along with Saturday morning cartoons and Sky King at noon. Did you get Fury and Circus Boy and Rin Tin Tin? I still remember Sherrif John singing "Put another candle on my birthday cake". Did you play red light, green light with Engineer Bill? Oh, and LASSIE on Sunday evening? I remember the cigarette commercials too.

message 241: by Tejas Janet (last edited Oct 15, 2015 07:36PM) (new)

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments Cherie, i don't recognize any of those shows you mentioned except Rin Tin Tin and Lassie, which i watched of course. I watched lots of Saturday morning cartoons. My favorites were the old classic ones with Mickey Mouse, Bugs Bunny, etc. Also loved the Jetsons and Scooby Doo. Rocky and Bullwinkle and others :)

It's the place for me! Did you watch Petticoat Junction too?

Joan My husband claims that the problem with this country is that we are currently run by a generation that grew up watching a talking horse.

message 244: by Tejas Janet (new)

When I was growing up it did mean lots of love! I was so confused when it suddenly changed. :)

message 248: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I agree, Kristie! My grandma always wrote LOL in her letters and I knew it was lots of love.

My sister-in-law used to put XXOO on her letters and I finally asked her one day what it meant. I know she thought I was kidding, but finally told me that it meant hugs and kisses. I had no idea.

message 249: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19143 comments Oh yes! I remember Xs and Os too. Still do those sometimes. :)

message 250: by Tejas Janet (new)

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments I was taken by surprise, too, when LOL changed from lots of love to lots of laughs. Over it now I guess.

About using Xs and Os sometimes - me too. For hugs and kisses. Xs being hugs and Os being kisses.
