Shay Fowler | 27 comments Well, I did it. I've actually written a few books.

I'm working on two series simultaneously. The first two of the romance series are as done as I'm going to get them and are ready to go to edit.

I have no idea how to choose an editor for this project.

I've chosen 'the best of the best' for the sci-fi/mystery series, but I just can't afford to do that with all of them.

I'm looking over dozens of services and I'm left frustrated. One sounds good on price, but I have no idea what I'll get back. Another is clear about the product, but I can't afford them. A few friends have offered, but they miss so much. None of them point out awkward sentences or criticize a character's voice. (I know that I am *not* perfect. I'm catching my own grammar mistakes *after* we all go through it. I need professional help.)

So I've been frozen at this stage for a full year and I have *got* to bite the bullet and push forward.

I'm going to self-publish, so the final product has to be good. It is the 'merchandise' that I'm selling, after all. I know that if I'm sloppy in this department, I may as well not publish at all.

I am not exaggerating. I'm getting an ulcer over this.

Help.

Cindy Davis (cindydavis) | 16 comments Hi Shay.
I might be able to help. I've been a freelance editor for 17 years (www.fiction-doctor.com). What you need to do though is contact a bunch of editors and request sample edits. Sort through those to find the one with whom you best relate. The one who gives the most of what you feel you need. Best of luck to you.

We need a website like Angie's List for writers. Where we can go to leave detailed reviews of the services. Help sort it out.

I've had people offer me their services, then say, "I don't like this word on page 248. I don't think that's a real word" and that was IT.

That'll be $1000 please...

No!

Cindy Davis (cindydavis) | 16 comments LOL. That's not the kind of editing you need, that's for sure. That's why a sample edit helps.

Shay Fowler | 27 comments Next question: what's a reasonable price to pay? What should an author expect from that price?

Cindy Davis (cindydavis) | 16 comments It really depends what you need. Private message me at https://www.facebook.com/cindy.davis.... if you want. If you'd rather we talk in person, PM me for a phone number. Maybe I can help point you where you need to be. No obligation.

Ellen Totten (goodreadscomelenam) | 7 comments They can vary. Some editors charge $5 per page, and others $250 or more for 100k words. Ask around for a Beta Reader. Fan Fiction has some Beta Readers listed.
