Basem | 2 comments The Unwanteds is about a city named Quill. In Quill everything is dull, metal is rusted and the people are raised with fear. They are isolated within their walls because of the fear of being attacked, though that hasn’t happened in 50 years. Every year there is a Purge, where thirteen year olds are chosen into which category they belong in. The intelligent are called Wanted's, they are put into universities to learn. The necessaries, people in between who are laborers within Quill. Last is the Unwanteds, kids who showed ANY sign of creativity will be executed for their creativity. One year of the Purge, their are twins whose lives will take dramatic turns. One was Alex, who knew he was an Unwanted because he drew on the ground. Then there was Aaron, who was very hopeful that he would be a Wanted and some day make a name for himself. Alex became an Unwanted, and Aaron became a Wanted. As Alex and several other teenagers were being lined up for their execution beyond the walls. As the Unwanteds were awaiting their deaths, they end up in a very colorful and magical place called Artime. On the first day the Unwanteds were very uncomfortable with Artime. In time however, they learned about music, dancing, art and writing. They also learned that their creativity, was a gift and also a weapon.

I enjoyed this book a lot because it has many themes in the book. The themes ranged from family connection to learning about a new culture. The characters were developing within the book over time as the plot continued. Each character has their own personality and skill of expertise as they learn about magic. Alex, in time he learned that he was a good painter and could use numerous painting spells with skill and precision.
