I am Bob, recently retired from a surgical career, many of those years in the US Air Force. Still working part time but with more free time to read. Thanks for the opportunity to join and contribute. For fun, I dabble in a few biographies about identities of 20th century America. In particular the early moguls of Hollywood and the music industry, and presidential politics up to and including President Reagan. In terms of historical fiction, at the moment my three authors of choice are Patrick O'Brian, Bernard Cornwell and Conn Iggulden.

Professionally my interest is 19th and 20th Century Britain, and I'm currently contracted for a series of political/historical fiction novels with a UK publisher.

My name is Bill. I enjoy reading non-fiction History, national security, military history, and ancient history. Studying history as it pertains to national security is my avocation. The most compelling book on my list is The Proud Tower by Barbara Tuchman. I also enjoy philosophy and poetry.

On the fiction front, I enjoy literature such as Faulkner. If I Forget Thee Jerusalem is one of my favorite books. Last but not least, I enjoy spy novels like John Le Carre’s Tinker, Tailor, Solder, Spy.

Hello and thanks for having this group on Goodreads. I am originally from upstate New York and I have traveled in or lived in 60 different countries. I like studying the histories of the places I have been to (Asia, Middle East, Europe, North America). My primary preferences are for modern history (19th century to present), social and cultural history, and political conflicts and upheavals. I have a strong interest in countries that have been written about less; I would rather read a book about Laos or Indonesia than a book about Japan or China for instance. But I also do not limit myself to too narrow a range. Hopefully by joining this group I can find good discussions and book recommendations for the things I like reading about. Otherwise, I am also interested in science, literature, art, cooking, and travel narratives. I also have a strong interest in counter-cultures, subcultures and groups of people that have fallen outside the boundaries of mainstream society. I am definitely not interested in conspiracy theories (real conspiracies are OK though) or revisionist history unless they are written about as sociological studies.
