Hi Everyone!My name is Liliya, and I love to read (or more accurately, to listen to) all kinds of books but especially history books because I love learning facts in the context of a larger story; it makes me feel more connected to the events that are happening around me - knowing that they are shaping me and influencing me and that I'm also a part of that "larger story."
A little bit about myself: I'm a Portlandian (Oregon not Maine) but originally my family emigrated from Ukraine in 1998. I have a strong connection to Eastern European and Russian history as well as the historical events of the US. I'm finishing up my Masters of Science in Occupational Therapy (graduating on Dec 23rd!) and currently involved in all kinds of crafts: crochet, cross-stitch, knitting, and scrapbooking. I have a loving family and I'm a devout Christian (my books tastes also include Christian allegories and biographies).

Hi everyone, I'm Margarida from Portugal and I've been living in Scotland for a couple of years now.
I joined this group because I want to focus on reading more non-fiction books and this group seems to be full of wonderfull resources for that.
As for special interests I love reading about Ancient Greece and Greek mythology, the Vikings, the Mongol Empire, Piracy and Naval history in East Asia and South East Asia, and WW2.
I also really like reading biographies, letters and memoirs.

Hi everyone,I was going to lurk a bit, but I got an email saying I should introduce myself. My name is Kyla and I live in Northern California. I have a BA in Anthropology and a Masters in Public Policy. Right now on my to-read shelf I have histories of China, Montenegro, Yugoslavia, the USSR, Hungary, the US, Mexico, Cambodia, the West Indies, and Russia. So as you can see I'm a bit of a history dilettante but the world is too interesting for me to limit my reading on one area or time period.
I'm pleased to join the History Book Club.I think it’s difficult to be a sensitive and sensible human being without some knowledge of history and its enduring elements. An insufficient understanding of history is an impediment to decent participation in human society. I am particularly intrigued by the systematic methods of the French Annalistes to examine the deep structures (longues durées) of history. Awareness and understanding of history allows us to create and sustain a mindful context for our past and present adventures.
I look forward to learning from fellow club members.

I didn't always love History, but that is because I had teachers who weren't passionate about it. Once I made it to college, however, I had an amazing professor who helped me to see how much I loved it. It has since became my favorite subject of study and is a huge part of my life.
I am an aspiring genealogist and am working toward doing it professionally. It's wonderful to learn about history, but even more exciting to learn about your own.

Hi everybody, I am Rüdiger from Germany (going by the name of tuxali here at Goodreads), a self-employed marketing consultant (since 1995) and managing director of a small company in the health service sector (since 2005). I have always been interested in history at school and even did two semesters of university courses on this subject before dropping it in favour of a degree in economics. It was most interesting, however, to follow a course (in late 1974) covering theories about the causes of the outbreak of World War I. Two of the attending students (well, probably guest students) where men in their late seventies at that time who had personally experienced the events in 1914 as young men and could comment on their own impressions and view of things at the outbreak of this devastating war.
Finally, my interest in history and historical literature (and fiction) was enhanced and really got started by the book "A Distant Mirror" by Barbara Tuchman, covering the life and times of the French nobleman Enguerrand de Coucy in the 14th century. This book basically confirmed what the title suggests: that the driving forces, emotions and schemes behind human endeavours have not really changed over the course of time.
When reading, my areas of interest are mainly medieval English history (roughly from Alfred the Great until the Tudors), including the Hundred Years' War; United States history; World War I and II; the Victorian Era and the late eighteenth and nineteenth century in Europe. I also enjoy reading biographies; Churchill still missing from my list.
I am not sure I will be able to really follow a joint reading challenge if it means that all members of the group should read the same books at the same time. Nevertheless, I hope membership in the group will bring up topics or book suggestions that will be interesting to take up and follow.
Hello allThanks for letting me be part of the group. I'm based in the UK on the Jurassic Coast and I'm interested in so many aspects of history, particularly what we can learn from reading the landscape, life in Britain from Neolithic times onwards, the Italian Renaissance (particularly Siena in the 1550s) ... I'm also interested in historical fiction and in fiction which we can now read for historical as well as narrative interest - because writers so often record 'how things are' and this becomes 'how things were'. Looking forward to participating.
Hi everyone!My name is Hannah, and let me just say, I'm so delighted I have been accepted into this wonderful group on Goodreads.
I'm 16 years old, and I am currently in secondary school. I live in Australia. History is by far my best subject (hence as to why I am here), followed by geography and global politics. This year I won two awards at school; History Dux for my year level, and another for Outstanding Excellence across Humanities subjects. (I usually don't boast, but this is the first year I've ever received academic awards, so I'm fairly proud of myself).
I love 20th century history the most. I'm not quite sure why though; perhaps it is because I can see how one thing led to another, and how these things could or will not reoccur in our future. Russian History intrigues me a lot, even though none of my ancestry is Russian. I find the Soviet Union an interesting aspect, especially as life was so different there compared to in Australia. I'm eager to learn a lot more about the Russian Revolution, along with some information about Tsarist Russia. I am also intrigued by other European History and relations throughout the 20th and 21st centuries.
I'm not entirely sure of what I want to study in university, but most likely International Relations, and I may decide to learn Russian or German (if I don't get into Law). Or you never know, I may decide to do a double major with History as one!
I look forward to contributing and discovering in this amazing group, and hopefully finding people with the same interests as me.
Hi, I'm Asta. I'm always up for reading a book about a topic I don't know much about, though I do prefer books that are well written. I'm drawn to social aspects of ancient/medieval history - I find it fascinating to see what made people tick, and how things were similar to or different from our own times. I'm not that picky about subjects though, I've been known to devour books on the history of Paraguay; and 18th century Chinese salt merchants.

Hi, I am Ranit, I am from India, I am new to the whole community segment in the Goodreads section. I like to read about World War 2, Anarchism, Marxism and as many books as I can on Che Guevara. My read on Anarchism has been strictly limited to Chomsky's book on Anarchism but I would love to have some more suggestions.
