Lisa I really could not relate to him or any of the hobbits they're just sooo good and simple that they seem unrealistic and un-human..
I've only read the first one so far.
Am I the only one who finds the hobbits so annoying?

Hobbits are not human. They are hobbits. Simple, yes. Annoying? Not to me. I think it's kind of great that these are a people who value hard work and having fun in equal measure. They do not strive for power or dominance and that is why a hobbit is the key player in the LOTR trilogy.

The Fellowship does drag, I will give you that. And yes, Frodo himself can become extremely annoying at times. But overall this is an amazing series and I hope you give it a chance! As the hobbits explore Middle Earth more characters are introduced, most of them not hobbits and some very likable indeed. The Two Towers was my personal favorite of the three :-)

I definitely want to read the rest - I liked the book overall.. I just don't really like the hobbits.. :( Maybe if Frodo made a mistake or something and wasn't so perfect he'd be more relatable.. I hope he changes a little by The Two Towers it would make him more interesting, to me anyway

Claire Oddly enough, I find the hobbits to be the most relate-able and "human" characters in the book. I could even venture to say that they're more human than the actual human characters.

They're just a bunch of average joes (just like any of us) caught up in a big scary world, faced with life or death choices.

The way that the hobbits behave in the face of these events is the way that I'm sure a lot of us would behave in their situation, in the sequence of "Oh boy! An adventure!" then "Yeesh that was kinda scary" then "Oh damn this is serious. This adventure was a bad idea" then "I'm not cut out for this" then "You know what, I'm here, and with my best friends by my side, I might as well go out like a badass".

I personally find that to be both very human and very realistic in that sort of life or death situation.

But I'm just saying this because I've read this series twice already, currently on my third rereading, so I'm able to see the whole thing in perspective. In Fellowship of the Ring, the hobbits are still kind of in their "Oh boy! An adventure!" stage.

Just be patient. They'll get to their "badass" stage soon enough.

Lisa I feel bad now.. :( I didn't mind their approach to adventure - It's just the character of hobbits in general - even the book describes them as 'dull'...
I do like 'good' and 'simple', normally, but I feel like there needs to be a bit of bad there somewhere or a contradiction in their personalities, contradiction is what makes characters real and less predictable.. isn't it?
It's like there's no let up in Frodo's righteousness, no chink in his armour and everyone loves him, at the moment he's too perfect for me to love - I look forward to reading book 2 anyway and the 'badass stage' :).

Prasanna Dommu I have read the LOTR triology twice. If you look at it carefully, each of the 'species' in Middle Earth is modeled after a particular human trait. Elves are adventurous, courageous and mystical, dwarves are greedy, hobbits are simple and hardworking, orcs are cruel, goblins are ugly and wizards are... well wise. No wonder you cannot relate to any one of them :)

I don't think Elves are adventurous at all. They're quite orthodox and uptight about themselves and their realms.

What's so cowardly about hiking down to the most dangerous place in the world with the most dangerous weapon in the world hanging by your neck while the world's most dangerous war storms all around?

yeah, way too righteous but I didn't think he was cowardly, not in book 1 anyway.. I haven't read the others yet

Ok. First Lisa, don't give up on the hobbits. They get more awesome as the series goes on. In the beginning they're like, "Yes! Finally we have something exciting to do!" Then they are like, "Wow, did that person just die?" To, "Alright, this is really bad. A bunch or scary orcs are trying to case us and we could totally die!"
And I wouldn't say that Frodo is "badass" by the end of the series, but the other hobbits are!!!

Secondly, I thought that Frodo was kinda cowardly at first, (or at least sacred and unsure) but honestly, wouldn't we all be if we were in his situation? Like Benja said, he's carrying the most dangerous weapon in Middle Earth around his neck, trying to hide it from monsters and Sauron. I would be scared too! :D

You don't have to like Frodo to like the series. The other characters make up for his faults with their awesomeness. :)

L.G. Estrella I agree with some of what is said here. But I do like the hobbits. I feel they strike a nice contrast with some of the other characters.

Pratiksha I felt Sam was the better man or Hobbit in the entire series. Dunno why Frodo was even chosen! Sam was loyal and brave, and I really felt a lot of liking for this character.

Caitlin YES, SAM IS AWESOME!!!!!!!!! :D
