I've noticed my friends have different patterns for adding books to their shelves. Me? I used to add a book as soon as I decided it was something I was interested in reading. Now that my TBR shelf is ridiculous, I'm only adding them if I've bought them, got them from the author or publisher, or they are available through the library. Of course, there are some exceptions but it's a rule I try to apply.

So, when do you add books to your shelf? Do you add them when you're ready to read them, when you know you're going to want to read them sometime in the future or when you own the book? How do you keep track of them if you wait until you're ready to read them?

Heather L (wordtrix) I only add books to my GR "to read" shelf when I actually have the book in my hands, whether it be my own or borrowed from a friend.

How do you keep track of those books you're interested in but don't own yet?

I have a printable wish list that I update regularly. This was necessary as I kept ending up with duplicates. Now, if it's not on the list, I can't buy it until I verify that I actually do not have it yet.

Shawn | 25 comments I've been adding as I get interested in something, so I don't forget about them. I pretty much know I will read new books by certain authors, but authors I'm not as familiar with I might forget to try out if I don't record it somewhere. I used to write little notes for myself but this is much better.

That's always my fear...I'll forget about the book. So, I use Goodreads to keep track of it all.

Heather L (wordtrix) It would be nice if we could add books to a "wish list" shelf without adding them to our "to read" shelf.

Curious, Heather...why don't you want the book to show on your TBR shelf?

message 9: by Heather L (new)

Heather L (wordtrix) TBR to me has always been the books I actually own. I don't want to look at my GR TBR shelf and see a book I really want to read at that moment or that might fit a challenge -- only to find I don't have it. Plus, my friends know that if it's on my GR TBR or READ shelf that means I actually have it to loan (though I generally prefer to only loan books I have already read).

I knew you had a rationale. Thanks, Heather.

In the Goodreads Feedback group, there's an ongoing recommendation for them to create an "owned" shelf, different from the owned indicator that was created for Paperback Swap and is no longer used for that purpose. I indicate in each of my records whether I own the book but it's not searchable, nor does it show up where I need it.

Janeiowa Jonetta: I have a To Buy shelf for those coming out later. I, too, have often missed authors I really like but aren't yet the kind featured when they have a new book out in BookPages or elsewhere.

[I also keep this on my IPAD on EverNote that will sync with my Windows laptop].

My To Read shelf is what I own, but I haven't read yet.

What's EverNote?

Janeiowa It's a free app that you can use to collect notes. [There's a paid version, too, but I don't do that.] You can then also have it on your Windows machines and the two will sync!! How great is that!!

Within the Notes you can keep Notebooks...so I have one for Goodreads, one for Knitting Patterns, etc.

Here's a url: http://evernote.com/work/land/version...

I got it from the App Store for the IPAD
and then downloaded the version from the website for the laptop.

Thanks, Jane! I'll check it out.

I've seen a lot of people asking for a "wish list" shelf different from the "to read" shelf, too -- one that would be permanent like the "read," "currently reading" and "to read" shelves.

Fingers crossed!

Jennifer | 96 comments Personally, I have no willpower or self-control. When I see a book I like it goes on my To-Read Shelf.

Yeah, that was me until a few months ago:)

message 19: by Giulia (new)

Giulia | 112 comments I add anything I want to read to my TBR. It's huge. I'm trying to remove ones I've lost interest in.

I know I need to take some time to go through and remove some books that seemed prime three years ago.

Giulia | 112 comments Problem us, taking them off the shelf takes so long :s

message 22: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 96 comments I need to take books off the list, but it's like taking an old friend out of your phone just because you haven't spoken in a long time. All of those books are potential friends.
And I don't even care if that sounds crazy.

Lol! It doesn't sound crazy to me because it's how I feel.

Jennifer | 96 comments Thank you! LOL

Maggie | 953 comments If it's something I might, possibly, someday read, it goes on my TBR shelf. That being said I have no doubt that most of the list won't get read .

About the only time that I'll find a book is whether or not the bookstore has it or not....if the bookstore don't have what I'm lookin' for then I won't buy the actual book and I'll say to myself "Okay,it's not here at the bookstore, then it can wait until the next time that I come to the bookstore and then I'll get it."
Other times,I'll keep a list of book titles of Nora Roberts's that I'll need to get/gotta get and if the bookstore has them then I'll get them and if not.....then I'll just pick up some of my other favorite book authors' books....u always gotta have a plan B for ur solution to buyin' books,at least that's how I look at it.
