Weekly topic for discussion - When do you add books to your shelf?

I have a printable wish list that I update regularly. This was necessary as I kept ending up with duplicates. Now, if it's not on the list, I can't buy it until I verify that I actually do not have it yet.

That's always my fear...I'll forget about the book. So, I use Goodreads to keep track of it all.

I knew you had a rationale. Thanks, Heather.
In the Goodreads Feedback group, there's an ongoing recommendation for them to create an "owned" shelf, different from the owned indicator that was created for Paperback Swap and is no longer used for that purpose. I indicate in each of my records whether I own the book but it's not searchable, nor does it show up where I need it.

[I also keep this on my IPAD on EverNote that will sync with my Windows laptop].
My To Read shelf is what I own, but I haven't read yet.

Within the Notes you can keep Notebooks...so I have one for Goodreads, one for Knitting Patterns, etc.
Here's a url: http://evernote.com/work/land/version...
I got it from the App Store for the IPAD
and then downloaded the version from the website for the laptop.

I've seen a lot of people asking for a "wish list" shelf different from the "to read" shelf, too -- one that would be permanent like the "read," "currently reading" and "to read" shelves.

I know I need to take some time to go through and remove some books that seemed prime three years ago.

And I don't even care if that sounds crazy.

About the only time that I'll find a book is whether or not the bookstore has it or not....if the bookstore don't have what I'm lookin' for then I won't buy the actual book and I'll say to myself "Okay,it's not here at the bookstore, then it can wait until the next time that I come to the bookstore and then I'll get it."
Other times,I'll keep a list of book titles of Nora Roberts's that I'll need to get/gotta get and if the bookstore has them then I'll get them and if not.....then I'll just pick up some of my other favorite book authors' books....u always gotta have a plan B for ur solution to buyin' books,at least that's how I look at it.

So, when do you add books to your shelf? Do you add them when you're ready to read them, when you know you're going to want to read them sometime in the future or when you own the book? How do you keep track of them if you wait until you're ready to read them?
