Nate Cox Diaz does an amazing job of inviting the reader into his experiences through his use of "vulgar" language. The book provides us with the real experiences of immigrants attempting to assimilate into the culture and many of the pitfalls of such struggles, including drugs, crimes, dysfunctional family relationships, race and identity. Some parts contain a dash of humor that makes the harder issues being addressed easier to absorb, such as the almost comical chapter How to date a brown girl, black girl white girl or halfie, or in the interactions with his brother in the first few chapters. The book offers us glimpse into the harsh and often times bleak world of a different group of people, and yet never overtly tries to hit you over the head with any lesson on race, sex or family and is more successful because of it.
