There are a couple of alien awaking underwater after billenia ones I can point you to.The Atlantic Abomination - John Brunner
The World of Ptavvs - Larry Niven (I suspect drawing heavily from the above)
For a post-human world, The Stone God Awakens By Phillip Jose farmer would be a good start. A scientist awakens millions of years in the future where humans are extinct. For an AI developing human traits, I'd say "Roderick" by John Sladek or Asimov's novella, "The Bicentennial Man"

You could read Asimov's Foundation and Earth. I read it as part of the over all Foundation Epic so I don't know if you could just read that and not have any issues with the characters. Also, the Robot City series may give you some good AI pointers. To follow up what Jon said, if you read The Positronic Man (the full novel in which the movie Bicentennial Man was based) is also good. That book takes the whole "life" of the Positronic Man from his "birth" to his "death"

From Fantastic Fiction - "Andrew Martin, a standard housekeeping robot, allows the unique capabilities of his experimental brain to lead him to become an artist, businessman, and crusader, in a novel based on Asimov's short story, "The Bicentennial Man"."
Sheesh
Robopocalypse is an AMAZING story about the robot uprising. It's a pretty smart read. Fun story too.
I can't not post Roger Zelazny's wonderful, wonderful story "For a Breath I Tarry." It deals with robots in a human-less post-apocalyptic world

I would be very interested in good books with relevant topics, such as Post-Apocalypse, Underwater, and Artificial Intelligence, especially in terms of AI developing human traits.
Thank you for your help, I look forward to see what you come up with!
