ABANDONED. Y/A - Set near a mountain; main character (girl) tries to retrace a murder that happened in her house.

This may be vague as it has been a couple of years since I first read it!

I'd say the book was published mid 2000's; young adult, fiction.

Set in northern USA.
The book started out with a young girl (I think around the age of 16) getting driven home in a police car. At first the scenery is quite dry (red-ish dirt) but then becomes colder as they travel up the mountain in the car. (Pretty sure there is snow).

The girl lives on a sort of slope - two story house.
She has a some-what "friendly" relationship with her school bus-driver? (May be wrong; the bus-driver was mentioned a few times however.)

Towards the end she describes her school friend or sibling being killed by someone some-what significant?
