It's actually a very old Biblical notion, that deceivers (moles & poisoners, for example) will reveal themselves because nothing good comes out of their deceptions; they grow nothing, and they produce nothing of value.

The malefactor is slowly discovered by the sleuth..and a snare is laid using his own habits against him.
Why? Are there corollaries between a 'mole' story and a 'poisoner' story? If so, what might they be?
