Orphan Train question

The Orphan Train (great book) is just one more example of the Irish characters being stereotyped into 1) Father who drinks too much; 2) Mother who becomes despondent at trying to feed her too-large family when the father is drinking away their money. I am looking for a book with Irish characters that break that stereotype! Thanks.
