I finished this last night and I couldn't believe the ending!! I was expecting to turn the page and there be another chapter and it was just over!(view spoiler)

I'm pessimistic, and think the answer to your question is no.

But what if the defect really IS a lie and it's just this pseudo governments way of population control? I could see that too considering it's a small(ish) space and they have limited resources
