Tom (tom_shutt) | 13 comments Hi everyone,

I'm in charge of a small freelance editing company, Main Line Editing, and my company of one is doubling in size! Yes, I'm bringing on an associate editor, which means we'll hopefully be able to help twice as many people as before at the same great rates you can always expect from us.

Copyediting runs at just $0.005/word, and proofreading is unbelievably affordable at only $0.002/word. There is no compromise in quality at these prices, though—I believe in providing Big 5 quality (or better, by some reports) at a price indie authors can afford.

I provide a free sample edit of the first 1500 words of your manuscript, and we'll maintain a dialogue throughout the editing process so that you'll know exactly where the story is at and how things are progressing.

I've had the pleasure of working with NYT bestselling author, Terah Edun, and USA Today bestselling author, KJ Colt, among dozens of other rising authors. I'm the editor other editor-authors come to when they need a thorough eye on their manuscript.

If you're still not convinced, check out just some of my glowing testimonials, and then contact me directly at thomasjshutt@gmail.com!

George Verongos (georgeverongos) | 28 comments It is this kind of under valuing of editorial services that keep all of us from ever approaching market value with our services. We should all band together and try to keep our services reasonably close to the EFA's guidelines. Charging considerably less than that is likened to being a scab that shows up for work when the rest of the union is on strike. It devalues the entire craft from writing to publishing. About 50% of my business comes from writers who have spent money on budget editors and then need to have their manuscripts fixed, just spending more money in the end when it would have been more cost effective, less stressful, and a much more positive experience to have chosen a professional who charges closer to market rates.
It is not just this post, but I see them all the time, this subject thread is littered with them.

Tom (tom_shutt) | 13 comments Hi George, thank you for your comment!

My argument against raising my prices is that the quality of editing would not change as a result. The changes and suggestions I'd be giving to my clients would be exactly the same in every way, except now I'm siphoning more money from their budgets—which, for self-publishing authors, usually isn't much to begin with.

I assessed my own current situation and arrived at a price that covers my living needs and is competitive when compared to other editors. It sounds like you've found a niche in helping authors whose previous editors under-delivered on a cheap deal—and that's great! But I'm not one of those editors. =P

The testimonials speak for themselves, and I'm proud of the service I get to provide to authors. And in the end, they're the reason we're in this business.
