Abra Any ideas or speculation on what the bonus content will be? I have been hoping for a completed Midnight Sun, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

I read the regular ol' 2005 "Twilight", for the first time, for it's 10-year anniversary. I didn't know there was one with bonus material! Okay, maybe I'll read the new one in 2025, assuming there won't be a Twentieth Anniversary Edition. (Actually, I admire Meyer, she really hit the jackpot!)

If anything would get me to buy the 10th Anniversary edition, it would be the finished Midnight Sun. If it's more of the bonus crap that she put into the Illustrated Guide (which was mostly ret-con and regurgitated stuff from the web) then I'll pass.

Rel8tivity Ugh. I just checked out the intro available on Amazon. I think I'm going to pass.

Dannielle I read that SM just swapped genders for Edward and Bella and gave them new names Beau and Edythe. At first, it really didn't sound interesting. It seemed like maybe she would just go through and word swap. However, she changed the genders of all the characters and gave them slightly different appearances. The only exception is Charlie and Renee. So, if you are glued to the Cullens being who they originally are, you might not like this version. Personally, I love Alice and thought it would be interesting to read it if Edward (Edith) was her sister instead of her brother. However, that is not the case. I find it really hard to adjust to the characters I love being swapped.

Ginevra Molly It sounds like a lame Twilight fan fiction. Why would she do this???

It does indeed feel like a lame fanfiction. Gender-bending fanfiction has been done before, so I don't think the story suffers strictly because of that. It suffers because of the name changes and the fact that SM was trying to do something "fast and easy".

One aspect of fanfiction is that it builds on fan familiarity with the original world. When you read the word "Edward" you know who that character is, you know the mannerisms and descriptions that were built in the original work. Here we know the story and the characters, but we have to work backwards to tie which character is saying what. A somewhat feminized version of a male name can help (Edyth is close enough to Edward) but some of them are a stretch. I had to think before I realized Jeremy was the Jessica Stanley character, and MacKayla was the Mike Newton character with the hots for Bella/Beau. Maybe if I didn't know the original story, and read this as a brand new work, I wouldn't have this problem. But it is a problem that some readers will have.

SM asserts that it doesn't matter if the vampire was a boy or a girl. The love story would be the same. So she's trying to get away with doing a quick edit, changing names and some things a guy or girl would say, and that's it. The problem is, that's not good enough.

Some of the writing and characterizations just feel wrong now that it's coming from a guy. She's portraying him as a geeky teenage boy. But he doesn't like sports or video games or anything that typical boys do? Disinterest in sports, maybe. But not liking video games? That's just crap. Video games and boys go hand in hand. Nerds who don't interact well with other boys are especially fond of video games because they don't have to socialize with anybody. It would make more sense if they were too poor to afford a game system. But not that he has no interest at all.

As for why SM would do this? Money of course. How lame would it be if they just re-labeled Twilight with a new cover, and SM just wrote a forward saying "Thanks for buying the 10th anniversary edition, you guyz are so great!!! Can't believe it's been 10 years!" Would you buy that? Hell no. So she throws us a bone. But obviously she's still not over her snit about Midnight Sun yet.

Rel8tivity Okay, I take back some of my criticism on why Meyer didn't do Midnight Sun. According to this article, she had started work on it again. But then EL James released her version of 50 Shades of crap from the male POV. So now Midnight Sun is off the table again.

Thanks EL James. Thanks a lot.

Ginevra Molly I tried it, and it was annoying, to be honest. I wasn't a Twilight fan and this didn't improve my opinion of her (Meyer's) writing talent.I don't understand Beau's character at all and he comes off as a weird blushing guy who's supposed to be geeky, but wasn't geeky at all. Well, all for money I guess. You're absolutely right. As for me, I would never recommend this to anyone.

Rel8tivity And THIS is how you do it. JK Rowling is working on a play that is the sequel to "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows":

Write new stuff, don't fanfic your old stuff.

John Schafer I know the 10th anniversary edition has the "Life and Death" story. Is that what is considered the "bonus material"? Because it seems like the accompanying "Twilight" book is the exact same.

Yep, I'm afraid so. You get the Twilight book, and the Twilight book with names and pronouns changed. And maybe some wording changed here and there...
