Cheryl (cheryllee) | 8 comments I had an editor I really liked but she seems to have disappeared. So now I need a new one. I really want more than just a proofreader. Some one who is detailed and not afraid to point out all my errors and make real suggestions on plot, characters, structure, etc.

I want someone who doesn't charge a LOT. A freelance editor...(who will preferably charge under $500 for the whole 60,000 word novel). This said, I know you get what you pay for. Most "inexpensive" editors I used before my last, really missed A LOT of things and barely critiqued at all. But there's gotta be someone "good" out there that wont charge thousands of dollars.

If anyone has any recommendations please let me know. I REALLY want to find someone :)

Thanks for any help on this. :)

Ruth Feiertag | 116 comments Cheryl,

I'll bet you can find someone on Goodreads for that price, and you might even find an excellent editor in your desired range. But $2,000.00 wouldn't be an exorbitant rate for a novel of sixty-thousand words. Five hundred dollars probably means you're paying an editor ten dollars an hour or less. Proofreaders often make more than twice that, and developmental editors (the kind you write you would like) of course charge more. Once we put aside the recommended third for taxes, ten dollars becomes about $7.70. You might want to do some research on the expenses freelance editors incur. Our tax rate is usually quite high since we are often taxed as both employers and employees. No employer helps pay our health insurance or puts aside money for our retirement. We often have years or decades of experience and many of us take classes to keep fresh or acquire new skills.

Again, I've seen plenty of people on Goodreads who charge very little for editing, so you may very well find what you want. In any case, I hope you do come across the right editor for your novel. But it does get frustrating to see how little value our expertise and effort seems to garner.

Longhare Content | 43 comments Cheryl, The fact that you want your manuscript to have a high level of editorial service is great. Unfortunately, the level of service you are looking for does come at a price. Ruth's numbers are correct, and your wonderful editor probably disappeared into the realm of steady wage earners rather than continue as a freelance at an unsustainable rate. But don't go into sticker shock yet. My advice is always to get sample edits from a range of editors and compare not only their quotes but also their services and working styles. You may find someone who will help you get where you need to go within your budget, or you may be inspired to stretch your budget a bit to get a level of service that will make you happy. Good luck.

Hi Cheryl

I'm a UK based editor who is currently offering fees that are reasonably cheap while I build up experience, but I like to think I'm pretty thorough. You're welcome to look at my website and consider whether you think I can help. I can offer a free sample edit or a paid beta read that then earns discount on editing work and serves as a basic developmental edit, but you will need to book in as work is building fast. Www.coinlea.co.uk explains my services and also contains testimonials.

Thanks for the response. I understand the value of someone's time. However as a freelance designer and artist myself, I also understand that there are a lot of good and qualified "newbies" out there that would like to gain experience and therefore offer their services for less. Or perhaps someone who does it as more of a hobby than a full time job. I can not afford thousands of dollars. So this is what I'm looking for.

I have no doubt I will find someone who can help. :)

J.M. Rankin (jmrankin) | 64 comments Hi Cheryl,
I can offer a full in depth edit of your novel for £295 (I edit the first 1000 words free so you can get an idea of how I work to see if it's suitable for you). I am a fully qualified editor and have worked with both authors and publishers since 2008, with many regular clients (references always available). I charge £5 per 1000 words (total above is for your word count minus the first 1000 words which is free) which gives you full control of the costs as I can edit as much or as little as you like.
I am always happy to discuss your needs so please feel free to contact me on Goodreads, via my direct email whitediamondedits@gmail.com or my website whitediamondedits.wordpress.com
Best wishes
Jacqui

Jaclyn | 21 comments Hello, Cheryl!

I seem to have come into this thread a little late and I hope this message finds you having found an exceptional editor. Should you still be on the hunt however, I would love to offer my services. I am a new writer and editor and truly I am trying to just break into the business. I am a stickler when it comes to grammar and punctuation and I have been dedicated to literature for most of my life.

I can guarantee you top edits for reasonable-- no, CHEAP-- pricing. At this point I am not out to rob authors blind or to make a quick buck, I truly just want to find my way into the industry and get my name out there. I will offer a sample edit for free to show you what I can do.

Feel free to email me at jaclynalee@outlook.com.

Regards,
Jaclyn

Cheryl,

I would love to be of assistance to you. I am just starting my own editing business. I promise to not pull any punches and give you honest, constructive feedback. I offer line edits with all the grammar/syntax corrections or a more broad edit just looking for glaring errors with characters/plot. Prices are negotiable at this point. All I really request is to be able to add you to my list of references upon completion.

Carol Tietsworth | 203 comments Hi Cheryl:
I am a Professionally trained proofreader and an experienced copy-editor. I keep my fees low because I firmly believe that all books should be edited before publishing. You can check out my pages at writerreadr.wordpress.com or email at legal2b@yahoo.com for a quote. I could probably do 60,000 words for $240.00 and I would throw in the proofreading for free. I am reading a book right now, but will probably finish it sometime next week.

Just my two cents. Good luck in your search.

Stella Bonanno | 3 comments As an avid reader, writer, and editor, I understand just how much goes into the writing process in order to deliver a polished novel.

**I will work with you on pricing and flat rates are available.**

Copy Edit: (Improving formatting, style, and accuracy of text)
-Shorten long sentences into two
-Cut adverbs
-Stick to the same narrative
-Punctuation
-Remove redundancies

Proofreading: (correct or mark any errors before print or publishing)
-Careful reading
-Detect spelling errors, punctuation, or grammar.

I offer converting your Word document into any format to suit all e-reader devices. (EPUB, MOBI, AZW3, PDF, etc…) Simply name the ones you want. This also includes meeting Kindle and CreateSpace guidelines.

Lastly, I recommend a final proofread after any modifications have been made but that's your own choice.

Joel | 1 comments For professional proofreading and editing at an affordable rate, I recommend checking out PaperBlazer (https://www.paperblazer.com). The rates are often 30-60% lower than what I've seen elsewhere, and the team of editors will do a fantastic job on your document. It's one of the best proofreading services online, and I highly recommend them for high quality editing.

Cheryl, I'm very good and work for reciprocal reads (and won't work at any price if the word 'dark' is in your genre). What do you write?

I'm into erotic romance. Guaranteed HEA ending after lots of troubles along the way. With explicit sex.

Martin Rinehart Good luck, Iffy!

Be aware that the quality of the copyedit depends a lot on the quality of the pre-copyedit source, as well as the sharp eyes of the editor.
