Moloch | 3975 comments This still needs some fixing: I've just noticed that it sorts fine the authors I fixed, but it still displays the wrong way.

screenshot:

(it's under C, correct, but should obviously be "Collettivo Bauscia 2" and not "2, Collettivo Bauscia")

edit: just checked, and all the edited authors show this behavior

lethe | 16371 comments Yes, that's odd. Gabriel García Márquez is listed under G, but displays as Márquez, Gabriel García.

message 53: by Philip (new)

Philip (burnnerman) | 5912 comments One other thing I noticed was that if you fix an author name you have to fix the sort by author name also. Would be nice if it was like book titles. Where if you modify the sort by line it takes what you put in, but if you only modify the title line it replaces the sort by line with the fixed title line.

Example:
Title (The Hose -> The House)
Sort Title (hose, the -> house, the) if you had not modified the sort line manually

I always fix the sort title line - I have found it often does not do it automatically.

I usually verify, but I found it did not used to, but in the last couple months it appears to work every time, as long as I do not tab to or change anything in the Sort by field.

I just stopped checking it. Quicker to make the change and move on.

This is the last from staff, I believe:

Jérémie Moenne Loccoz | 300 comments Hello,

I do not know whether this has been updated and does not show up on my bookshlef yet but "L.E. Modesitt Jr." still appears as "Jr., L.E. Modesitt". He is a GR author though so I assume he can correct it himself?

message 60: by Moloch (new)

Moloch | 3975 comments As announced by Meghan in the Feedback thread, this is working now: good good GOOD! You can't believe how happy I am now looking at My Books all correctly sorted :-)

I haven't tried to export yet.

Elizabeth (Alaska) Will the librarian manual be modified to reflect proper sorting format?

Regarding a policy on authors whose names end with Jr. or III or other generational suffixes: We are finalizing a policy on this and will have updates sometime next week.

Elizabeth (Alaska) Thank you, Rivka.

message 66: by Nickname (new)

Nickname | 70 comments What's the policy about authors like "Walt Disney Company" or "The National Geographic Society"? About numbers in sorting please consider popes, for ex.
"Francis, Pope" or "Pope Francis"?
"XVI, Pope Benedict" or "Pope Benedict XVI" ?

Thanks!

PS I don't know if this is the right place but this goodreads author need to be fixed
https://www.goodreads.com/author/show...

"Woolfolk Cross, Donna" instead of "Cross, Donna Woolfolk"

I also would like that.

message 68: by lethe (new)

lethe | 16371 comments I missed the implications of Philip's comment earlier. Does that mean when you correct an author name on a book record, you then have to go to the author profile and correct the sort field?

message 69: by Ayshe (new)

Ayshe | 3084 comments I am not sure about the book record edit case - probably not; but if you fix it on the author's record, the sort field remains unchanged, until you specifically edit that, too.
I find somewhat annoying when editing author records on autopilot (these with initials that need correcting, for example).

Elizabeth (Alaska) Are we nearing having a policy and manual addition on Jr., III, etc.?

Wanted to answer this here as well:

It was all-but-finished -- and then we got the additional field. Which is very exciting, but does mean we need to do some re-writing.

message 72: by Moloch (new)

Moloch | 3975 comments Very good, the newest field works fine

message 73: by Ashley E (new)

Ashley E | 416 comments Not sure where to put this, so I'll try here...

When I sort my to-read list alphabetically Justine Sebastian comes up first--before J.L. Aarne. Clearly something is wrong with the sort-by field, but since the author is a GR author, I can't check it out. Some staff to help?

It's best to send these requests to support (at) goodreads (dot) com

Shelf display name? Is it correct as shown here? I don't know how things are supposed to display on shelves.

Thanks for the example. I was having the same problem with John W. Campbell Jr.

LOL I wish there was a way Balzac could automatically default to having an accent on his name, people are forever adding it without it...

Brian Baltosiewich | 1 comments Hello, I'm a new author and my book was added by my wife, then I was able to add it as my book, because I just started my account today. I can't edit the book, though? I want to add the cover image. My book is The Podcast Pep Talk. Do I need my page made into an author page? Thank you, Brian

Koenraad (koenraadkelemen) | 7004 comments Brian wrote: "I can't edit the book, though? I want to add the cover image..."

Hi Brian, welcome to Goodreads!
You already have an author page here. This page was created when your wife entered the data from your book. This page can be altered by all librarians. You can claim your profile, thus limiting access to yourself and staff. To do so, click on the "Is this you? Let us know. ..." link on the bottom of your author page. It may take a few business days to process your request. You will receive email confirmation when your user account is successfully upgraded to an author account. Joining the program merges your author page with your member page. The email will also contain further instructions for managing your author profile.

You can read more about the author program here.

A Goodreads author has limited control over the books of which he is the primary author, but but this does not include changing/deleting covers, adding url's, or separating books. This can be requested in this group, and will be done by one of the librarians.

I have already added the cover image to your book and added some data on your author page.

Your book and profile are already on Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/author/show... If you wish to claim the profile, here is the form: https://www.goodreads.com/author/conf... When it goes through it will merge with your current reader profile.
