ABANDONED. Young adult sci-fi book set in post apocalyptic or different planet. Pre 90's

I think the story was about a boy/young man who has to leave his settlement/community to another one or somewhere. Not sure why.
The book must have been written pre 90's as i read it in the 90's and it was an old book.
I remember sand dunes. Possibly slaves, the boy may have been a slave?
Not much info i know but any suggestions would be appreciated.

Citizen of the Galaxy possibly? The MC is definitely a slave for part of the book. And he moves around a good bit.
