J I'm in for both Allison. Do you have a library or kindle where you could obtain both or either of the books for free or less cost? Don't worry about not having read any of the
previous Lucy Stone works. She is of course further along in her life but I have read all of them and nothing I can think of in the past would affect the current read.

Jill Tool | 992 comments The library had just put it on the shelve while I was looking at the books, so I grabbed it before anyone else, otherwise It would of been centuries before I'd get it at the library...lol... I've read a couple of the earlier books in this series, then this one and I didn't get lost so if you haven't ready any in this series before you will be able to follow along and not get lost. I'll join the discussion of Candy Corn.

A Curious Beginning is fine with me, I won't be able to get it until about the middle of Oct. Which should be fine. I too have to budget for the new books as well, so I feel ya Allison.

Our nice fall weather has been vanquished and we are back up in the high 80's, so I've been out in the yard getting it ready for fall/winter, and getting a lot of that good vitamin C and this fall cold is almost gone....YEA!

I'd say Candy Corn Murder is it. I hear it's a better one in the series. I don't see a problem following along, Allison. If my recollection serves, I believe LM is successful at writing her books in stand alone fashion yet of the series. In fact I like it that her kids are pretty much out of the house and she is a free agent.

Okay, why don't we figure Candy Corn as our Oct. read. Maybe start it last part of Sept-early Oct. I'll go ahead and pick up or order my copy this weekend.

Anymore votes for side read? If no, Curious Beginning would be okay with me.

Refresh my memory, PLZ PI's. I forget if I offered to host Candy Corn?? I'm in (if no one else wants to).

I'm good with timeline. I'll wait 'til mid Oct. to pick up Beginnings. All's well and we're shaping up for a wonderful autumn in The Parlor. I LOVE this time of year. My fave along with the winter holidays!

message 55: by Jill (new)

Jill Tool | 992 comments ummmmm I don't remember if you offered or not Tina, maybe Allison, J, Anna, or Pf, remembers.

I'm with you also on fall being a favorite time.

message 56: by Allison (new)

Allison | 905 comments Ok then. Candy Corn it is. I will go get it. I will wait to get Beginnings until we're closer to reading it. I do have a Kindle, J, so it will be a little bit cheaper.

I think I remember Tina volunteering to host October back when we were choosing our September read but that was a while ago now and I'm not too sure.

message 57: by [deleted user] (new)

I will skip Candy Corn because I don't like the food and other themed stories as well as the others.

I have reserved A Curious Beginning with a number 16 spot so I hope to have in time for discussion.

I am fond of historical mysteries.

message 58: by Jill (new)

Jill Tool | 992 comments Candy Corn isn't about food. Lucy works at her local newspaper and the town in gearing up for their pumpkin festival and Halloween. The title is in reference to fall, halloween. The only theme to this series is that the author centers her books around most of the holidays. So the titles are basically telling you what holiday, or season which ever the case might be.

You'll be able to stay with the story Allison. You won't get lost. You'll be told who who is and be just fine. The story is easy to follow.

I read some of her first few books, but haven't read any since this one came out and I was able to keep up real easy, and their little town, Tinker Cove, Main sounds so cute also.

Do please jump into the discussion if you see we are talking on another topic. We will probably veer off occasionally.

Maybe you could suggest something of a Historical mystery for our November read? I don't know so much about that genre so I would have a hard time suggesting something you might like. I love discovering new authors and series and I am sure the other PI's would welcome some new input as well.

Off yet on topic - Future read, main or side title. Maybe Nov. or early 2016, The Appearance of Annie van Sinderen by Katherine Howe Synop sounds good! Note - The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane by Katherine Howe (takes place in Salem, MA) is author's first book which I thoroughly enjoyed. Forgot all about the latter title as it's a few years old.

Where's our Pghfan? Last I knew he returned from vaca, checked in but it's been a few. Don't want him to miss out on new title pick. Yoo, hoo from The Parlor, Pghfan. You are missed!

message 65: by Jill (new)

Jill Tool | 992 comments Tina, I like your picks for side reads.....added them to my growing list...lol....

I though he was still on vaca. and that he was only checking in that one time. If he's like me, after returning from vaca, I need a vaca from vaca...lol

Go Jill go! Seek and find thy aged mysteries, lol. I'm actually looking forward to seeing what you find.

T - Both of those look good and I'm in to read either one sometime. I entered the Giveaway too! Apparently I'm feeling lucky sine I WON ONE recently! My first so I'm a little excited. I have a copy of
A Riddle in Ruby by Kent Davis by Kent Davis coming!

message 68: by J (new)

J So passing the local library last night I stopped in to see if they happened to have A Curious Beginning on the shelf since I'm on a wait list for Candy Corn Murder. They did have it but what I failed to realize is since it is a "new" book it can only be borrowed for 7 days! Since it is most unlikely I will finish over 300 pages on that time span while still reading Roux, I will read what I can and hopefully can get it again when we discuss. If not, I will have to rely on memory and I'm in trouble

message 69: by J (new)

J Pgh - thank you! And nice to see you back.

message 70: by J (new)

J Just read msg#68 that I posted. The text made it through all the way but the emojis did not. Wonder if that is part of my problem? Although certainly it has happened in other posts with no emojis. Hmmm. Be that as it may the developers are looking into it.

I thought this is the October book? I might not have the months and the books right.

A Curious Beginning

A Curious Beginning (Veronica Speedwell Mystery, #1) by Deanna Raybourn

It is London 1887.

message 73: by Jill (new)

Jill Tool | 992 comments Your right MsG, after we pick our monthly book, we often through out ideas for other books in case someone wants to read them. Some of use read fast, some of us read slow, some are somewhere in the middle, so if we hear of books we share with them.

Ok now back to my investigation, I'm about to request the warrant.......

message 74: by Allison (new)

Allison | 905 comments So to recap Candy Corn is the group read for October and Curious Beginning is the sideread - correct? Just want to make sure I'm reading the right stuff at the right time.

J - not sure I could get through 300 pages in 7 days either, especially with another book in process. Glad you're library had it though. I might have to make a pilgrimage to my library again. I don't like it so I don't go.

Jill, Allison, I really liked Physick Book of Deliverance. I sent a copy to one of our former members and she loved it. Another great series is Louise Penny's 3 Pines. Esp. first 5-6 books. The Brutal Telling (Chief Inspector Armand Gamache, #5) by Louise Penny was about my favorite in series so far.

We did read one of Louise Penny's a few years ago and it was enjoyable. I think I may be in for Candy Corn, depending on how easily I can rustle up a copy.

message 85: by Tina (new)

Tina (tinacz) | 6103 comments Mod
I know, Jill. She's amazing! Did you happen to catch film adaptation of Still Life? It's out on DVD now. I would've pref'd a different Gamache but in all, it was pretty good.

You're right, Pghfan, we did. Glad you expect to be along for Candy Corn. I've read several posts saying it's one of her better books in the series.

message 86: by Jill (new)

Jill Tool | 992 comments Candy Corn is one of the better books, at least it's not political like some of her other's have seen to be, and since October is also domestic violence awareness month, she does touch on it, but does not overpower the story. I enjoyed it. The library had just put it out and their new releases you can only check them out for 7 days, so I had to grab it otherwise it probably would of been Feb. before I could get my hands on it. Still trying to get my hands on a copy of The Santangelos by Jackie Collins by Jackie Collinsand it came out several months ago...Oh well maybe I'll put that on my christmas list, I'll probably get it for Christmas before I can get it at the library. Especially now that Jackie passed away sat.

I didn't see Still Life was out, I'll have to scower raound for it.

message 87: by Tina (new)

Tina (tinacz) | 6103 comments Mod
Glad for that, Jill. True, a few of her books did get political. Nice to know this one is not.

Grab it while the grabbing's good, Jill.

Had a copy of Still Life but passed it on to former member. And I think she did same. It's around somewhere. Maybe even at library.

Jill, IMHO NP is not who I pictured Gamache to resemble. I thought a Tom Selleck would've been more for the role. http://www.amazon.com/Still-Life-Thre...

message 89: by J (new)

J I'm about a third of the way through A Curious Beginning and am somewhat disappointed with it, unless it picks up IDK if I will be joining the side read.

message 90: by Jill (new)

Jill Tool | 992 comments Tina, I agree a Tom Selleck would of been better, but in Nathaniel Parker defense I will say he is a awesome actor, just don't see him as Gamache, at least not what I have pictured in my mind.

It's kind of like all the Doctor's from Doctor Who. Matt Smith to me was the best Doctor, he was more what I had pictured in my mind as the Doctor. Of course the other actors were good, in my mind the way Matt looked, acted, his gestures even his laugh was more of what I saw the Doctor as.

Tina (tinacz) | 6103 comments Mod
We agreed that Parker though a great actor (he made an awesome Lynley) in this role, the fit just wasn't there.

True that about Doctor Who. ;-)

message 92: by J (new)

J Just an aside here- I developed eyestrain doing it - lol- but finished A Curious Beginning! A bit slow going in the beginning and drags in places but the last third of the book is action packed to say the least. I think the PIs will enjoy it and I reserve the rest of my comments until the discussion.

message 93: by Tina (last edited Sep 23, 2015 02:51PM) (new)

Tina (tinacz) | 6103 comments Mod
J, the darn eyestrain. Unfortunately, I've to save peepers for stories I really enjoy so lately I started this thing where if I don't get into a book, I let it go. Was hard for me to do that the first time. I felt like I was sinning. lol Then like all things, it got easier. So, PI's, if I don't see a book to the end, it has nothing to do with you or the pick, it's just something I must do for moi. And taking eye vites. That's also something I must do for me. lol

PI's, a few more days and we'll start Candy Corn. Just want to be done with my current side read (which I'm liking) so I can savor Candy Corn. Either way, I won't hold up new discussion while I "nibble" as autumn is officially here. Wish our weather would comply. Hot down here in the south. Enjoy your cooler temps.

I just ordered this from the library system. They said there are 35 copies and that 5 are available, so I should have something shortly. Given that it is so new, I hope not to have a problem. The book was $12 on Kindle which was more that I wanted to pay for something like this...

I know, right? $12 for an Ebook - like I said before (on some thread or another) the prices for Kindle books are the same or sometimes higher than an actual printed book. Crazy. That's the reason I have been holding off getting it until we are ready to actually read it. Sigh. I might have to actually go to our library here to get it. I don't like our library. They really don't seem to have that many books - computers, fireplaces, a huge magazine reading room and like 5 rows of books, a lot of which I seem to have read or are not interested in.

I am fortunate that here in Pittsburgh, we have a great library system. Dozens of library branches, including one a short walk from my house. And there is an on-line ordering system that will get any available book from any of our locations and deliver it to my nearby branch!

Oh we have that too. I'm just not really impressed. And they charge late fees so if I check out books, I'll read them, but it takes me awhile to get back to the library to drop them off so i'll get late fees. Sometimes the fees are more than buying the book in the first place so I just do that.

Allison,
does your library have a digital collection? My little library goes thru Hoopla and Overdrive for their digital collections and I do seem to find a lot more books on there for both ebooks and audio....you might check and see if they have something like that

Starting date this weekend. Everyone good with that? Savor-erer here so not to worry if you cannot start right on kick off date. You'll probably pass me by anyway. ;-)
