THIS IS A THEORY I FOUND ON REDDIT:

Charles and Jason are twins. When they were young, Charles seriously hurt Ali (hence her broken elbow thing) and that's why he was separated from the family. He was put in Radley. This is why "no baby pics of Jason" and so many of Ali...Ali's mom felt very guilty. Bethany and Charles meet at radley and are dating. Ali finds out about Bethany and gets jealous. When really, Mrs. D has two reasons to visit radley: bethany and Charles. So Ali lures Bethany to rosewood. It gets fuzzy here, but basically Charles hits Ali and Mrs. D saw, that's who she was covering for. The other liars kill Bethany, and that's what he has against all of them. he gets back to radley then, and it is there he meets mona. Remember, A took over in season 3. It is in season 3 where jason falls down the elevator shaft and then comes back way later after being in "rehab" which is actually closed. The next time we see Jason, it is actually Charles as Jason. So, we have known him and seen him.

Still waiting to see what it is. Unsure of my feelings on this "reveal" but I am trying to make sense of it.

A is Charles DiLaurentis. Charles is Jason's twin brother as revealed in the home video found in the memorabilia room. The video was taken at Andrew Campbell's family-owned farm or place (I forget what Veronica said it was) and it was where A's lair was found by Tanner and Toby, too. Anyway, so Andrew isn't A, but he's Charles' friend and accomplice. Andrew has known the DiLaurentis's for a while because they would go to his family place, and him and Charles were friends growing up and probably kept in touch even when he was at Radley. (Andrew could be faking his age in order to go to Rosewood High and stalk the girls)

I say that Charles isn't "trans" but he has an inferiority complex. He wants to be loved. I say that at a young age (before Alison could really remember) Charles was sent to Radley due to mental illness. As he grew up he was sort of watching from the "outside" and saw how popular Alison was and how she had her own little posse that followed her around and idolized her (the girls) and Charles was jealous. He longed for a normal "teenage" life and wanted friends, too. He was so incredibly jealous of Ali, even Jason, too. Alison was the apple of her parents eyes and everything revolved around her. She was the "Princess" and maybe Jessica and Kenneth forgot about poor ol' Charles at Radley.

*the whole prom thing makes sense now. The '06 prom would be Jason's prom, so therefore it would be Charles prom, too. However, Charles was in Radley so he couldn't attend it, so this is making up for it.

Anyway, I'm not fully 100% with this theory, but I think I'm getting there. I think A's motive for torturing the girls is because he wants them to idolize him like they idolized Ali. He wants his own group that will love him, be his friend and will share secrets with him. He wants to be in control like Ali was.

Additionally, the Jason we knew for the first 1-3 seasons or so may be dead, and the Jason we've been seeing in the latest episodes could actually be Charles. Maybe when Jason disappeared in the season 3-4 time frame, maybe A (Charles) killed him and "filled his spot." This is the main part of my theory that's iffy.

Just some food for thought.

Edit: IN RELATION TO BETHANY ----> I now think that Charles was the person that escaped from Radley (the one that Jessica was so concerned about) and the one that hit Ali over the head. Maybe, Charles befriended Bethany at Radley and Jessica started to look out for her too when she visited Charles. Maybe because Bethany seemed less spoiled and "more sane" (if that's even possible) than Alison she started to care for her like a second daughter. Then Charles and Bethany planned this whole thing out for "revenge" but it ended up Bethany dying and all that stuff."
