The Doctor's Daughter is very well researched and as a fan of historical novels I'm always interested in seeing the fictional trials and tribulations of a sympathetic character enmeshed with actual historical events. And the characters in this work are very well drawn. The story begins in 1860 when Kate's father dies of a gunshot wound to the chest, and it's ruled a suicide. Kate believes he was murdered, thinks she knows who did it, and determines that she will bring the murderer to justice. The author is very adept at throwing in red herrings which keep you guessing all the way to the end. The only problems I had were the detailed descriptions of the community events, and of some of the home remedies and chores depicted in the book, which slowed the early part of the story. The ebook also had some very minor formatting glitches that occasionally affected paragraph indentation, but I found only one typo. None of these latter problems detracted from the readability, and some readers might even welcome the detailed descriptions. I would reduce the rating by less than a half star for these issues, and I rounded the rating up to five. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Historical Fiction and fine writing, and look forward to the upcoming sequel.
