The Chemistry of Death (David Hunter, #1) by Simon Beckett Thinking Of going safe with Steven King, but heard good things about The Chemistry of Death too. Anybody out there read them both, weigh in on it.

Both had the same rating in this site. I'd pick "It" just because is a literary classic in the horror genre.

I haven't read The Chemistry of Death, BUT I am reading Stephen King's It and I can say that it's one of his best books. It's very creepy and very well written.
IT is a big book to read through, and at times it gets difficult to keep reading it. But if you have time and patience, I would go for IT. I can't say which one you should read first, but King's book is very good.

They seem quite different books to me, "It" is a horror novel with some SF/Fantasy elements and a YA subtone.

While Beckett to my knowledge is an honest to god suspense writer.

So it really comes down to your personal interests. Though, Beckett is probably a lot more contemporary a read. King is known for his heavy use of pop-culture references, among other things.
