Amyiw | 175 comments OK, so we had 15 people vote for this. I've been wanting to read it for so long and keep on pushing it back. I wonder if any else are reading it.

I find it very similar to Dresden Files, a private eye, a alternate world/universe. Lady comes into the office and hires John. I would have said he Butcher took it from Greene but I see that this was published after Butcher. So far I'm liking it better because I don't get the self deprecating vibe that radiates from Dresden, still there has to be some reason that he is avoiding the Nightside.

Amyiw | 175 comments Well only 2 1/2 for me.

The only thing I liked better than Dresden was that John isn't self deprecating and morose. I think it actually was a little less dark. I really liked the ghost bar that is stuck in the 60tys.

So the main problem is that the characters are mostly flat. There are a couple that I found interesting like Suzie Shooter, but there was not enough development and time with her to get a roundness.

The plot is quick and simple, the description of Nightside on the other hand was pretty intense. I would rather plot and character development than world building. Of course being the first in a series, usually you get a lot of world building, this just lacked a plot to go with it.
