Hi, I am Ranee one of your discussion mods and I welcome you to this year's joint book discussion with our friends in Flip Flipping Pages!

We will be discussing/raving/ranting about Harper Lee's Go Set a Watchman
for a pdf file, pm me but I encourage you to grab a hard copy and be a Harper Lee completist! (She only authored 2 published books so it won't be difficult to complete her works)

Suggested Reading Plan:
Sept 1-5: Chapters 1-6
Sept 6-12: Chapters 7-12
Sept 13-18: Chapters 13-19

You may read it beforehand but discussion questions will be asked following the suggested reading plan. So please ask your questions on a certain chapter accordingly so as to avoid spoiling other members.


Discussion Guidelines
I do not believe in deadlines. I however believe in participation power but do not flood, it is a thin line, do not cross it.
Questions I shall post in very random times within the week, I could sometimes credit extra points to the first person who answers. Clue, I sleep late and therefore wake up late.
Activities will also be posted in random times. Point/scoring system however goes to the most creative/most unique. Judges will be nonTFG members to avoid bias and vote buying

2. No. I don't want to be an enchantress. And I can't. I'm not a smiley person and I hate pandering. Also, I can hardly keep my mouth shut. Arguing and contradicting just for the sake of having an argument is one of the things that I take pleasure in. Well, I've seen a lot of enchantresses at the workplace. I don't like them. They are hypocrites but yes, they are charming.

3. The Merriweathers.

4. 42 years.

5. I think I'll just go forth with the divorce. They want it anyway. It's their right and as an attorney, I should not interfere with that. Also, I don't think I should put my nose in such a private affair. It's them who are married to each other and not me to them, so I don't have anything to say with regard to their marriage.

6. Alexandra said, "I do think, Jean Louise, that now is the time for you to come home for good. Your father needs you so."

7. Jean Louise said, "Aunty, if Atticus needs me, you know I'll stay. Right now he needs me like a hole in the head. We'd be miserable here in the house together. He knows it, I know it. Don't you see that unless we go back to what we were doing before this happened, our recovery'll be far slower? Aunty, I can't make you understand, but truly, the only way I can do my duty to Atticus is by doing what I'm doing--making my own living and my own life. The only time Atticus'll need me is when his health fails, and I don't have to tell you what I'd do then. Don't you see?"

8. To a Waterfowl by William Cullen Bryant. The major theme is faith in God. In the poem, the narrator wonders where the waterfowl is going and why. He then realizes that God is guiding this creature and that He has given it a purpose. If He takes trouble in a waterfowl, He will surely do the same to a person.

9. Jean Louise said, "Women like for their men to be masterful and at the same time remote, if you can pull that trick. Make them feel helpless, especially when you know they can pick up a load of light'ud knots with no trouble. Never doubt yourself in front of them, and by no means tell them you don't understand them."

10. Not my ideal man but this will do. Beggars can't be choosers, hehe. Anyway, I don't like men who are just there all the time, so this thing that Jean Louise is talking about makes perfect sense to me. This remoteness adds a layer of mystery on a man's character, and it would be thrilling to access it every once in a while. I don't think I've met someone like this yet. Crossing my fingers!

Bonus 1. NAACP stands for National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. It is an African-American civil rights organization in the United States. Its mission is to ensure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights of all persons and to eliminate racial hatred and racial discrimination.

Bonus 2. My boldest moment is hauling my stuff from Baguio and choosing to live here in Manila. For a year, I stayed at my friend's house in Baguio right after college (in Angeles). I had a freelance writing thing going on but it was not enough to get me a solid career. Also, the endless drizzling and the uneven roads nearly drove me mad. There are only two things that I can do: endure a lifetime of soggy socks or go back home. I did neither; I considered a third thing. And here I am answering the discussion questions.

2. Aaron has a peculiar habit of grouping people together by the color of their clothes. For example, when TFG manned the FilReaderCon booth at the Books and Coffee Fair last weekend, he paired us six by shirt color (stripes, gray, brown). Actually, he didn't notice that me and my sister are wearing brown shirts. Ranee had to point this out. Anyway, I've observed him do this color grouping a number of times in the past. It doesn't bother me but when he announces this, it's as if it were a breaking news item.

While he was browsing through the (then) newly-put up TFG tumblr, he noticed that he has always worn RED for all the times he moderated an F2F. This was before F2F40, or the High Fidelity F2F which he also moderated. SO, to keep to his own "tradition," he also wore red on that F2F. (hide spoiler)]

2. I have never had a chance to be an enchantress and I don't think I ever can be one in the first place. I can hold my tongue fer sure. But I don't think I can go as far as telling a man how wonderful he is if he isn't. Nor could I take waiting on him if he isn't worth waiting on.

Do I agree with Scout's decision? Yeah, solely because I have faith that Scout knows her father (and herself) more than Alexandra does, as good as the latter's intentions maybe.

2. No, I don’t think I can pull off smiling all the time. Although, I do believe a lot of girls can be an efficient enchantress, I’ve met some of them, and I don’t particularly hate them, or like them neither.

5. I’m not a fan of divorce, but if I am a lawyer there is not much I can do except respect my client’s decision, as long as it is within reason. And adultery is a good reason.

Yes, I do agree with Scout on that. She knows her father and herself enough to understand how they handle misery. Besides, much as she hates to admit it, she’ll be more heartbroken seeing how Atticus mourns for Jem.

8. William Cullen Bryant wrote the poem, "To a Waterfowl". It speaks about how God bothered Himself to guide a waterfowl. Surely, He will do so much more for us.

9. The wisdom of Jean Louise: "Women like their men to be masterful and at the same time remote, if you can pull that trick. 2. I hate extreme rides or activities. I assign those to my husband and daughter. But there was this one time that I let myself be goaded. My sister and I bungee jumped together off the Jauntal in Stuttgart a long time ago. Our cousin Carlo drove us all the way there and paid the fees, all he asked was that we jump. That was the only time we shared with him since he goes to Munich University, and so we agreed. The fear mostly came from waiting, and the major shock was the sudden dip into the freezing Drava river. We only did it once.
