Yaar basic theme of the novel is Totalitarianism! Means everything, literally everything is controlled by one group.
I think author just wanted to show how you would feel in a society like this. When your every move is being watched by your leaders.
It's a Dystopian novel, so these things are expected, right?
Are liking it so far?

Yaar basic..."
Yup Totalitarianism it is... because it's not exactly communism ...
I like this novel so far but I found Ray Bradbury's "451" much better than this... because the dystopia he created , was on the similar lines but irrespective of any touch of communism or capitalism. It simply presented a universal idea of totalitarianism which could be easily understood and accepted without any political knowledge. But here , it's slightly different.

Hmm... I have Fahrenheit 451 in my mobile for soo long. But I didn't pay much attention to it. I will read it in future as now you have compared both of them. I also want to find out which is better. Till then I like Dystopian world of 1984. :D

Yup dystopian genre is good to read every once in a while

*whispers* Agreed! 👍😉

I was thinking that it would end up like Ray Bradbury's " Fahrenheit 451 " but it's very different from it and more deep.

Like you guys have pointed out in the previous comments that 1984 is about a Totaltotalitarian regime which exerts absolute control over the almost every single aspect of society. I'll add a few things. In the book, English Socialist Party emerges victorious in the British civil war caused in the aftermath of a global war between in victors of WW2 and sets up the totalitarian government. The world ends up in three superstates Oceania(formed by US & British commonwealth), Eurasia(formed by Russia taking over Europe) n East Asia (covers China, Japan n cetral asia states), Three engaged in a perpetual war over remainder of the word from africa to malaysia.
Book is work of fiction but it is deeply rooted in the actual historical events of early 20th century and the living conditions described actually to a large extent did exist in the Nazi Germany and Soviet Union. Orwell feared that the uncertain state of global affairs could very well set in motion the series of events mentioned in the book. Socialists taking over only to betray their cause and everything they stood for and form a totalitarian government just like the Bolsheviks had done in Russia in the aftermath of WW1. They'll accumulate total political and social control gradually by claiming it to be a necessity in order to win the war and any opposition will be removed by branding them as enemies of state till there is no one left to oppose.
Once this is achieved the party elite (Inner Party) then ensures the elimination of any future threat to this system and their firm hold on it by devising different ministries which take control and direct each n every source of information and other aspects of life. The state and ministries (government machinery) are run by the literate middle class (Outer Party), they are given the illuison of power and authority over the majority of population; proletariat (Proles) with no politica or social power, however, this is just an illusion and the real power resides within the Inner Party and Big Brother. The inner party have access to all the perks and decide the facts from fiction. The outer party spread the truths decided by the inner party using different tools and get a sense of authority and status along with limited perks.
The inner party put the Proles under surveillance because Proles being blissful ignorant idiots who don't know or care about anything outside their lives. Outer Party (middle class who wants to work for the machinery) on the contrary is put under constant surveillance as they might pose a threat to inner party. They are kept in place by using various tools like propaganda, fear, and deception. Most of them have been lured in by the petty leisures and a false sense of power and are willing to do everything blindly that inner party instructs to retain that prestige and power. They try to outdo each other to reach a higher position and won't mind giving in their fellows to achieve it. They are so deeply caught up in it that they are unable to realize what actually is happening. All the while the perpetual war rages and is used uninterruptedly to suppress and eliminate any kind of social or political pluralism or divergence in the name of the need of national solidarity in face of threat to the national security.
The social-political ideas/events described as extreme and crazy as they may seem did exist in the early 20th century and they still remain in one form or another in the modern world. The soviet union being the most prominent example where the Bolshevik's revolution transmuted into a totalitarian regime which reached its zenth during the time of Stalin and set up a system which enslaved millions and was responsible for death of around 50-60 million people excluding Soviet casualties in WW2 (27 million) which was also the result of Stalin's own incompetence and his previous actions. Soviet government became the prime source material of Orwell's 1984 which by no means was a milder version of the inhumane and ruthless reality. That other nations of that time like Britian, France, US and Nazi Germany had clean hands but none of them went after people of their own country in the way Soviet Union did with the somewhat exception of Nazi Germany.
Damn this has become so long. I wanted to add the parallels between Orwell's 1984 and modern nations; some quite obvious while others much more sneaky n tricky. But I must stop it here, its already too much. Can do it later if anyone is interested. :)

Abdullah mentioned it being similar to Fahrenheit 451, a great book in itself. I partially agree with that because the end results (the authoritarian socio-political environment) maybe very similar to each other, however, the path to it or the causes which result in such environment are very different. (view spoiler)
