SOLVED. Oprah book club starts with 2 kids in a river, there is an old woman and maybe a fence [s]

This was an old Oprah book club selection maybe in the late 90's. I think it involved a black boy and white girl who were not suppose to be friends. It starts with them floating in a river or lake. Then there was a woman who maybe could see the future. There might have been a fence that separated sides of the town. I also remembered I enjoyed the book.

Does Oprah's website keep a list of past books? Did you try looking there?

I did go there and saw the list, there are 70 books listed. I read a bunch of them and just can't remember which one it was. The synopsis they gave on the books did not help.

I remember hearing about the book you just described and I think it was set in Mississippi and the girls name was Pearl or that Pearl is in the title name somehow.
