I think he is lost. I think Jeyne Poole will play her part well. I had wondered what happened to her.

I hope so, I don't like him. I'm feeling a Reek Turned Ramsay curse coming on....

What did Jon Snow mean by telling him that Lord Commander Mormont was killed by his own black brothers? Does this mean he is becoming more cautious?
I think so - watching his own back more - but taking more risks in other ways.

They need all the man/woman power they can get.

Maybe Tyrion wants Young Griff out of the way when he deals with Dany. The advice did make sense though. But Dany is looking for a husband now, so if Griff goes to her first, she might choose him and leave this big mess behind. Hmm, I think she will stay, marry, sort out her mess, husband die, leave someone else in charge, then go for the Iron Throne.

62. Speaking of which… to which queen is Tyrion going to be delivered? (And Jorah Mormont is seeking out whores that look like Dany. What is the significance of that?)
Jorah is still in love with Dany, finding substitutes. Dany is the only real Queen. Cersei is Regent. I hope he means Dany.

63. WTH? Do you think Dany is seriously considering marrying Hizdahr zu Loraq? Will he be able to bring peace for 90 days?
She doesn't want to, but needs the peace. She made no promises, so she doesn't have to go through with it.

I think she has gotten side tracked. I really do think it is generally good practice for ruling, and perhaps her destiny will ultimately be to rule outside Westeros, but if not, she need to get a move on.

46. Why does Dany not trust Xaro Xhoan Daxos? Do you think he’s working for her enemies?

She is right not to trust him, as he will turn on her when he gets what he wants. But, he does have some wisdom to offer in the meantime.

47. Does anyone understand the bloody glove? Dany says it means war…war with whom?

I assume Xaro and the other leaders in the area.

48. Jon Snow gives Stannis battle advice, and even tells him where to find 3000 more fighters. Doesn’t this go against his vow to not take sides? Do you think by sending him to find the 3000 fighters he’s just trying to get Stannis out of his hair for awhile?

I think he is trying to ride a fine line – Stannis gave him help and may do so again in the future. The Lannisters have basically refused to send anyone to help the watch.

49. What do you think will happen with Melisandre, since she’s staying at the Wall? And how will they feed all those Wildlings??

I think she is trying to keep an eye on Jon and the North. While I don’t care for her tactics, I think she genuinely wants to protect Westeros from the others.

50. Speaking of Melisandre, what’s up with the ruby on Rattleshirt’s wrist? She controls him with it? Weird.

51. OK, now I feel dumb. Am I the only one who didn’t figure out the mystery of Young Griff? Now I understand the “kings are born” remark (question 43). I need to pay more attention! I did think the kid was unusually well-educated for a sellsword’s son. I must say this is a clever plot twist by GRRM.

I think his cruelty was already well known, so I am not sure this will make it worse. I would definitely not surrender to him.

I think it make sense for now – like asking for the King’s men. They are facing what looks to be a temporary enemy. And, if they will flee later, making them take the vows would probably not stop them.

Had not thought it was anything more than their show of independence. Perhaps it is more.

Tyrion does seem to enjoy playing games of this kind. Interesting to me that he is sending Aegon to Westeros when it seems like a weaker position to take. Part of me wonder if Tyrion isn’t using Aegon to wear down Cersie and then plans to have Dany attack once both sides are weakened by the battle.

I think Mormont is still alive. He could give Tyrion to Cersei and securing his place back in Westeros. Or he could could give him to Dany in hopes of getting back in her good graces. Interesting. Not sure either would work.

I think she is feeling the burden of ruling, but doesn’t really think it will come to marrying him. I suspect that he will be able to bring peace and force a decision by Dany. Hopefully Tyrion will be there to offer counsel by then.

I was disappointed with this crush on Daario. I wonder if his brazen attitude harkens back to her Khal. And I don’t think the ban will last, unfortunately. He is very willing to kill a great number.

Questions for Chapter 31 (Melisandre) – Chapter 34 (Bran)

96. So many conflicting things happening with regards to Melisandre, who you know is not my favorite character. In this chapter we learn that she is using alchemist powders to preform her tricks and illusions. We knew her fire reading was faulty, but now we know for sure. That said, she is right some of the time, and close others – and obviously has some powers. So what does it mean when she is searching the fires for Azor Ahai/Stannis and gets images of Jon Snow? Who are the other possible contenders? And WTH are Melony and Lot Seven?
I thought Azor Ahai was going to be Dany, but now I think it might be Jon. He has a sword made from valarian steel - which I think might be hot all the time near the white walkers - maybe it will turn out to be Lightbringer? I still think he had Targarean blood - and with Dany and young griff, there are the three to ride the dragons.

97. Comments on the big reveal of Mance Rayder/Rattleshirt? Surprised that Jon Snow changed his mind about his recuing “Arya” after this?
He trusts Mance. I was hoping he had managed to survive, but had no idea how.

98. When Melisandre thinks her bed doesn’t get much use since King Stannis is gone, does that mean she was sleeping with him? He doesn’t seem the type, but then I keep thinking that I thought she had seduced him when that thing that she birth after she had Davos row her to kill Cortnay Penrose when he would yield Storm's End.
Sounds a bit like that.

99. Uh oh. Does it bode ill for Davos when Milisandre says she can create a glamour with any piece of a person and she mentions a bag of finger bones?
The finger bones comment stood out to me too. I wonder what she has done?

I hadn't thought so.

Not sure, I got a bit lost here.

104) Nothing to earth-shattering happening with Tyrion. He keeps running across Penny; is that only so her backstory can be revealed? Plus, he is maintaining that he is a kingslayer, when we know he is not. Comments.
If he is going to be punished for a crime, he might as well claim credit for it, noone believes that he didn't. Maybe Penny will play a bigger part in Tyrion meeting Dany. If Tyrion is nice to Penny, she might stand up for him with Dany. I think Dany will be more sympathetic to Penny than Tyrion, he might need someone else on his side - Ser Jorah was sent away, so might not be the best support for him.

105) Is it just cynical me, or is Bran becoming more nonchalant about warging into Hodor and other things? Geez. I’m not liking any of my favorite characters this go round.
I guess practice makes perfect, but I don't like him warging into people just for fun.

106) I feel sorry for Merra. She is really trapped. Jojen doesn’t look long for this world; then what will she do?
Not sure. Maybe stick around with Bran, wherer else can she go.

107) Where the three children, when Bran warged into the weirwood, Eddard, Lyanna, and Benjen? Who was the pregnant lady begging to be avenged, Catelyn? (Didn’t catch the hair color.) Nor do I know the brown haired girl kissing the tall knight. You?

129) We now know Stannis has Asha and the group is not faring so well with the cold weather. I found it interesting that Asha's father told her to yield if she couldn't win. Seems like most say to fight to the finish. I think for a woman, however, it depends on who you're surrendering to. Could be a fate worse than death.

130) Seems like Melisandre has a very loyal following. What will she do if Stannis dies? Will her loyalty lie with Aegon?

Not sure.

131) Alyson Mormont (the She-Bear) is an interesting character. So they murdered woman (Alyson's sister Dacey is an example) too at the Red Wedding. I didn't know that. Are you surprised?

No.

132) What do you make of them wanting to make a sacrifice of someone?

I think they are desperate.

133) Why does Stannis wish to save Arya?

Maybe to win over some lords from the north. They would look at him better if he saved her. Or, it could be to sway Jon to his wishes.

134) Daario was quite persistent that she marry him. Cut her off cold when she went through with the wedding. Interesting. Could this lead to a future conflict?

The way he is it seems likely.

I was happy that she got it back.

Yes I am happy she can see again. I don't think they know about her being a worg yet though.

Anywayz… A lot of strategic information and war plans in this chapter. Quite a bit of brutality too. Jon Connington, former Hand of the King to Aerys II, comes across more brutal and unfeeling for me than I previously envisioned him. If this dude is “reborn,” then he is a hell of a lot meaner. Especially throwing the maester out of the tower window and not caring about all the deaths of the warriors or prisoners. What do you think? Is all fair in war?

I just feel he has learned much and is dieing and wants to complete his quest.

A real likable fella! What has Moqorro done to his arm? He seems to have superhuman strength now. Does Moqorro really see victory for Victarion, or is he just saying that for self-preservation?

He is coming with Daenerys ships that she needs. I think he will be playing a big part in the story soon.

(205) Who is the Other god that must not be named? I can’t help but think of Lord Voldemort every time I read this.

(206) Ah-ha, the horn turns up again! No one can blow Dragonbinder and survive. What will Victarion do with it? And does it bother anyone else that it takes 1000 pages to find out what happened the last time someone blew the horn?

(207) I just have to reiterate how I hate the direction that Arya’s story has taken. I am extremely disappointed! That said, she must kill the evil insurance adjuster in order to get her new face. (The walls of faces were pretty gross!) So, why did they give her the new face before she killed him? And are we to understand she killed him with a coin?

In this chapter we learn that she is using alchemist powders to preform her tricks and illusions. We knew her fire reading was faulty, but now we know for sure. That said, she is right some of the time, and close others – and obviously has some powers. So what does it mean when she is searching the fires for Azor Ahai/Stannis and gets images of Jon Snow? Who are the other possible contenders? And WTH are Melony and Lot Seven?

It is all a mystery to me. I think Jon will obviously play a large role in it all.

97. Comments on the big reveal of Mance Rayder/Rattleshirt? Surprised that Jon Snow changed his mind about his recuing “Arya” after this?

I had begun to think Mance was not dead, but quite surprised Melisandre is in the middle of it – I shouldn’t be, right? I am torn because I want Arya to be rescued, but worry at Jon owing them anything.

98. When Melisandre thinks her bed doesn’t get much use since King Stannis is gone, does that mean she was sleeping with him? He doesn’t seem the type, but then I keep thinking that I thought she had seduced him when that thing that she birth after she had Davos row her to kill Cortnay Penrose when he would yield Storm's End.

I assumed they were sleeping together. In part, Martin kept mentioning that Stannis’ wife was queen in name only and everyone knew who his real queen was.

99. Uh oh. Does it bode ill for Davos when Milisandre says she can create a glamour with any piece of a person and she mentions a bag of finger bones?

I think they will ultimately be on the same side.

100) Could Ramsay's wedding to the fake Arya end up being another Red Wedding?

I think it could be something quite similar. Definitely plotting of all kinds going on.

I think he is lost right now. Penny may be his way back to the kinder side of his nature.

He is definitely becoming more free with his warging. Hopefully, this will not lead to bad things, but a lesson seems inevitable.

Men tend to love a leader more that they can follow into battle, but it would be safer to stay back. It depends on if he sees the threat more from what is out there or from what is within his own walls.

109) Do you think the Wildings are starting to trust Jon?
He is proving himself more. They will follow him if they trust him. They don't care for titles, just toughness.

110) Interesting that Ghost's coat will come in handy.

So much manipulation and politics going on everywhere. Jon is being careful not to cross any lines, but the lines are blurry.

Maybe. i always thought Jorah didn't really betray her for money, maybe love. I don't think Daario really loves Dany, whereas I think Jorah still does.

It may gain the love of the people, if any of them survive, and if Dany doesn't die. I want to see her get through to the final battle so i don't think she will get killed off just yet, i think that would upset too many readers, though it wouldn't really surprise me. But a plague would be such a sad unexciting way for her to go.

Maybe.

It is an interesting question because he is putting himself in jeopardy when he doesn’t have a great support system to step up if he is injured or killed. At the same time, if he wins over the Wildings, that would be huge later.

I think they will – especially if Mance ultimately gives him the nod, which I think is coming. His ability to lead and protect them will be the thing that sways them.

Yes and yes. But, he does need to stay on that fine line of not letting politics attach to closely to the watch.

Don’t trust Daario – and I think she doesn’t either. I am disappointed in this story line overall because it seems out of character for Dany to be the googly eyed girl that puts everything at risk to sleep with some guy.

She has some protection from sickness or harm based on her dragon blook it seems. Still, she needs to figure out what she can and can’t do for the sick. Interesting the Martin seems to be exploring some very practical difficulties of ruling and leadership through this character.

Actually kind of hope it ruins the wedding plans.

I have not trusted that Gregor is actually gone. I am totally expecting a Freddy pops up in the end type of surprise. Perhaps that says more about me.

117) The Sand Snakes are free again. And Doran has them swear a holy vow that they will not betray him. Do you think one will? If so, which one?

I hit some sort of character overload during this chapter and formed no opinions… Hopefully it is temporary.

118) Who from Kingslanding told Prince Doran of Cersei’s plans?

With Varys and Littlefinger gone, who is running that place?

119) What do you think of the plan for Ser Balon to blame Trystane's death on Tyrion? Is Myrcella brainwashed enough to make this plot work? Wait. Will it be someone disguised as Myrcella? I’m confused.

I think Myrcella will carry it off. She has enough interest in not revealing she went with Aryanne in the first place.

120) Does Doran know Aegon Targaryen is alive or not?

I think he suspects?

121) Will Val be successful with Tormund? Will she get back to the wall before Stannis?

Yes – I see these two sides working together. And I am a little concerned Stannis will never get back to the wall based on Melisandre’s omens.

122) Whoa! Yarwick, Celladore and Marsh are not happy campers. Did you notice that Bowen Marsh didn’t take the offer of food or drink from Jon Snow? Comments.

I understand their angst, but not looking like calm waters for Jon.

Tyrion is a survivor. And I think Jorah is striking out at the Lannisters who caused him to lose Dany based on the betrayal they asked him undertake.

I think so. He seems to genuinely like her.

At least it wasn’t Ramsey! I think the fate worse than death can be men or women as her brother would attest.

130) Seems like Melisandre has a very loyal following. What will she do if Stannis dies? Will her loyalty lie with Aegon?

Based on her visions – I am going to say Jon.

131) Alyson Mormont (the She-Bear) is an interesting character. So they murdered woman (Alyson's sister Dacey is an example) too at the Red Wedding. I didn't know that. Are you surprised?

No – it seemed like a kill the lot type of event.

132) What do you make of them wanting to make a sacrifice of someone?

A little disturbing, but from desparate men. And Stannis saw the folly in doing so, so we are good there.

133) Why does Stannis wish to save Arya?

Could be she would be a valuable hostage.

134) Daario was quite persistent that she marry him. Cut her off cold when she went through with the wedding. Interesting. Could this lead to a future conflict?

I think it is in Daario to always push to see how far he gets. But, he will most likely settle into whatever new role gains him the most from this point forward.

She seems stuck in the moment and is not thinking long term, so not surprised.

I think it was in the last book that they decided to split he and Bran up for safety? Bran went on with the wildings to find the dream guru and Rickon was sent off with Osha - the wilding that tried to capture Bran in the woods (I hope I am remembering her name right). I can't remember if they told us generally where they were headed or they just disappeared from the story.

Most of Westeros believes him dead, but Wyman Manderly and Robett Glover learn from Wex Pyke, a survivor of the Sack of Winterfell, that Rickon Stark is alive. Wex tells them - via writing since he cannot speak - that Rickon and a woman fled to the island of Skagos.
When Davos Seaworth attempts to convince Lord Manderly to take up Stannis's cause Manderly brings Wex into their meeting and explains to Davos what Wex witnessed. Manderly then tells him that in order to take Stannis as king Davos must meet his terms. Manderly informs Davos,
“ Roose Bolton has Lord Eddard's daughter. To thwart him White Harbour must have Ned's son ... and the direwolf. The wolf will prove the boy is who we say he is, should the Dreadfort attempt to deny him. That is my price, Lord Davos. Smuggle me back my liege lord, and I will take Stannis Baratheon as my king. ”
When Davos asks where Rickon is Wex throws his dagger onto a sheepskin map adorning the wall. To Davos's horror it strikes Skagos. Davos is left with no choice but to head to the infamous island to retrieve Rickon Stark.

He's been giving her preferential treatment to some extent, so at least she has enough food. She will carry on with her plans. Aegon might be a back up plan, or she might go for Jon, if she sees in the fire who he really is.

I think Stannis has some loyal followers in the castle – or at least someone doesn’t want Ramsey in charge with Bolton.

I don’t think so. But, he also will be willing to accept death when it comes.

148) Theon thought he saw a flash of fear in Roose Bolton’s eyes? If he is growing worried they must all be in dire straits?

He must have some idea – Winterfell lost to tricky armies twice already.

149) Was the godswood scene spooky? I think that was really Bran, right?

I do think so. Only thing that makes sense.

150) What was all that drumming? Who is Abel's washerwomen, really? Why are all these chapters ending in cliffhangers.

I think he know he will need him in the future to get away and stay safe.

The only thing I could think of is the water disease where they can die from inside out? But, I don’t think that is really what it is.

Make himself useful or valuable? Also, put Brown Ben in a place where he wants to take him?

154) I can’t believe I’m excited about a Jamie chapter. But it is the only one in the book, right? Unless his story continues under an assumed name like some of the other chapters.

I was glad to see what Jaime is up to as well. I think he is going to ultimately be a force for good in the Tyrion story.

155) Looks like Jaime turned into quite a diplomat. I’m sorry, but the names Bracken and Blackwood were too similar for me. I couldn’t keep the daughter of Blackwood as a hostage and the reasoning straight. Can someone help me?

I think he is taking a hostage from each just to keep the peace.

I say the black – though whether they will be glad he did, I don’t know.

Seems like the murders accomplished getting the Maderlys and Frey to go after each other. But, I don’t think they were supposed to spur Roose to go in search of Stannis.

I think coming back to Winterfell gave Theon enough traction to overcome Reek. If he is recaptured, he will no doubt fall right back into Reek. And poor Jeyne – no words here.

I hope that this encounter will bring her strength back. I suspect she is not ready to abandon Meeren just yet. Wonder what her husband is going to do with all of that?

Not an accident. I think those washerwomen are behind it. Maybe stiring up conflict within.

147) Theon is contemplating suicide again. Will he try?
He just wants out of this horrible situation he is stuck in. I don't think he really wants to die and I don't think he will attempt suicide. But he might risk death to escape.

148) Theon thought he saw a flash of fear in Roose Bolton’s eyes? If he is growing worried they must all be in dire straits?
Trouble is near.

149) Was the godswood scene spooky? I think that was really Bran, right?
I think so.

Maybe they are stirring up internal trouble to distract everyone and help Stannis to get in. Maybe they are really helping Theon get back to his sister and pretending to save Arya/Jeyne.

Wildlings are very survival of the fittest because of the harsh environment they lived in. They don't need to blend, just be tolerant of each other.

It hadn't been as big of a problem as I'd expected, so it might come back.

I didn't think it was too severe, I think Cersei might lose more than an ear...a head, so she might not get a chance to see.

Lies seem pretty par for Cersei. I have no sympathy because I am pretty sure if she gets out of this mess, she will jump right into the next plot.
