James Joyce was going to throw this work on the fire when his wife rescued it, it is an early version of "Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man" but the publishers rejected it so many times that James ended up writing the book the publishes wanted - in my opinion this novel craps all over Portrait, and is barer in its sincerity at examining the processes of thought that matures a young artist. I would give it a definite shot as I nearly vomited reading the academic introduction to Portrait, it was like sitting through a religious ceremony with a particularly evangelical priest at the helm.
