Dan (dannyyg) One of my favorite ereader news bloggers has informed me of the newest updates to Kindle Paperwhite first model. Most of the new updates include:

Kindle FreeTime - FreeTime lets you create personalized profiles for kids, and give them access to titles from your collection of books. Kids can keep track of their personal reading progress and earn achievement badges. To learn more, go to Kindle FreeTime

Goodreads on Kindle - Connect with the world’s largest community for readers from your Kindle Paperwhite. See what your friends are reading, share notes, and rate the books you read. To learn more, go to Find and Share Books with Goodreads on Kindle.

Cloud Collections - Use Cloud Collections to organize your content in custom categories. See your collections in a Collections view, and customize where your collections show on your device. To learn more, go to Organize Your Content with Cloud Collections.

Page Flip - While reading, you can skim the book page-by-page, scan by chapter, or skip to the end for a sneak peek without losing your place. To learn more, go to Go To Other Locations in a Book

Enhanced Bookmarks, Highlights & Notes - Access and manage all of your bookmarks, highlights, and notes more quickly and easily. To learn more, go to Bookmarks, Highlights & Notes

Smart Lookup - When you look up a word or character, Smart Lookup provides you with dictionary, X-Ray, and Wikipedia information. To learn more, go to Explore Your Book with X-Ray.

Vocabulary Builder - Words looked up in the dictionary are automatically added to Vocabulary Builder. View the definition and usage of the words, and quiz yourself with flashcards. To learn more, go to Expand Your Vocabulary.

I just download and installed the newest Kindle Paperwhite update and I was wondering what you people think about the new update.

I have posted the link of my source.

D.J. Edwardson Haven't updated yet, but the enhanced bookmarks, page flip, and X-Ray look interesting. The vocabulary builder seems like the coolest thing, though, as I'm something of a logophile.

NancyInWI (nanckopf) | 10 comments I'm late to this thread, but I have a first "edition" Paperwhite which I updated and I don't seem to have Vocabulary Builder...where do you find that?

NancyInWI (nanckopf) | 10 comments I went into my Paperwhite and apparently I didn't automatically get the latest update. So, I followed the directions on Amazon for manually downloading and updating. I now have the Goodreads icon on my menu bar, Vocabulary Builder and something called Kindle FreeTime! I am ecstatic!!! I'm glad someone posted about this.

NancyInWI (nanckopf) | 10 comments Guess I don't need FreeTime...it's for kids and mine are all grown up and out of the house. :-)

Dan (dannyyg) My thoughts after updating my Kindle Paperwhite First edition are very positive.

I really like the page flip and easy access to the cloud collection the best. It is much easier to flip through pages of the ebooks and you practically skip several pages with slide of the finger.

I have uploaded all my bought and DRM free ebooks to the cloud collection a couple of months ago. Now with wifi internet access I am able to download and read directly from Amazon cloud. It is a pretty neat feature.

Please keep posting your opinions and response to this newest update.

LOL, yeah I found that one pointless too because I don't have any kids and could careless to earn virtual badges for reading books.

I really like the page flip feature the best out of this update. It is awesome!

NancyInWI (nanckopf) | 10 comments I haven't even tried the page flip. Not sure I would use it.

Emily | 3 comments I did not know there was an update for the 1st generation PW Kindle. We can now connect to GR on it??!! Awesome. Going to check out what other new features there are in this update.

Update: Just updated my kindle and the Inline Footnotes feature would have been great for when I read Hello Goodbye Hello: A Circle of 101 Remarkable Meetings

Tom Semple (tom_semple) | 12 comments Popup footnotes, page flip, and enhanced bookmarks are my favorite features. Cloud Collections too, since I switch between reading devices a lot and that helps me find what I'm reading more easily.

My only complaint is that dictionaries don't 'cascade' any more. It will only do a lookup in the default dictionary and will not lookup in supplemental dictionaries automatically, as it used to.

NancyInWI (nanckopf) | 10 comments Can you explain what Enhanced Bookmarks are? I never use bookmarks as the book always opens to where I left off. Can you mark a page to go back to that has highlights on it? I know if you're looking for a particular highlight, there is no easy way to do it. Sometimes I have to go through 20+ pages.

Tom Semple (tom_semple) | 12 comments Before, bookmarks were easy to create (just tap in upper right corner) but awkward to navigate back to. (tap to bring up options, tap to get menu, tap Notes and Highlights, swipe through pages of these until you find the bookmark you want.

Now when you tap in the corner, it displays a list of your bookmarks with their locations, and you can add a new one, or tap on one of the others to bring up a preview of the page that's marked, or you can remove any of them by tapping the 'x'. So they are just one tap away.

Notes/Highlights are easier as well. Tap to bring up options, Go To brings up Contents|Notes. Tapping Notes shows a scrolling list of Notes/Highlights. There are three types: Yours, Popular, Public, you can switch between them by tapping on the label and then scroll by swiping up or down. Before they were all mixed together and so there was more to scroll through (unless you filtered).

NancyInWI (nanckopf) | 10 comments Thanks for the explanation Tom. I'll have to check it out myself.

Lara Amber (laraamber) | 42 comments I'm just so happy to have the Vocabulary Builder. I love coming across new words and learning them.

This week I learned perihelion, perspicacious, and adit!

David | 1 comments For those who are not aware Goodreads is not available to Kindle Paperwhite registered to Amazon France. When I contacted Amazon France, the person who answered the phone was not even aware it existed.
Why?, I could not find out, I suspect it has something to do with French licensing rules???????????????

message 16: by Redvolution (new)

Redvolution | 17 comments Help please. When I open a new book it gives me an option to update on goodreads but it doesn't work. I have to go to the goodreads icon on the home screen and update it from there. Any ideas on what's going on? I didn't see anything when I googled the issue. I have a new kindle.

NancyInWI (nanckopf) | 10 comments Redvolutiom you may want to start a new thread with this question. You posted your question on a 2 year old thread.
