Why do you like to read?

Its only in the last few months that I started reading, even though my Mum and Dad were avid readers while I was growing up. I'm not entirely sure what made me start, I think it was all the feels I had reading The Fault in Our Stars by John Green.
I think everyone reads for different reasons. I can understand what that person Andrea was talking about means. For my personally I think it does make up for something I feel is missing. Some days, I feel empty without the company of a good book. Maybe you don't know what I mean.. or maybe you do. While a book is open the characters become my best friends, their world becomes mine. I see myself in the characters as they experience feelings I've felt before or those I'm feeling now. I find that reading is a good way to explore your own thoughts, a means of coping and maybe even a means of learning to deal with new situations. Books really do give you a better understanding of human emotions.

I agree with Jasmine20 - reading makes you smarter. it also gives you a chance to experience things you normally wouldn't be able to experience in your every day life.

Emily Rodda because I've been reading her books for about a decade (since I was six, which I'm very proud of) and she can build the most beautiful, fantastic worlds I've ever read (not to mention the characters and plot-twists!). They're inspiring and will never stop being fun.
Fantasy in general is incredibly entertaining.
Non-fiction because I love learning new things about anything I can.
The action of reading itself is very calming.
Characters! I love characters!

I think you just summed up why I've always loved reading in a single sentence. :)

But why do I read? Because I think it takes me on adventures, because you can grow as a person, because it helps me understand. Understand people and things around me, understand language, understand cultures, just understand the world. To see it all from a point of view that might be different from yours.
It's just the best thing in the world!

She'd read to me. And not just stuff like Curious George, and Clifford. No. I sat through Lord of The Rings when I was 5. Quite honestly I think the most depressing day for her as a parent was when I was 7 and told her that she didn't have to read Harry Potter aloud anymore because I was skilled enough to do it myself. Tears were shed.
When our family fell apart, as many do these days, I didn't have anyone to go to except for my books. Bluestar, Firestar, Ravenpaw (all from Warriors), Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire (Series of Unfortunate Events) and Harry, Ron, and Hermione (I feel that one goes without saying) quickly became my new best friends. Reading was how I forgot how mad I was at everyone on this planet and how I got away from them. But this past year I've learned that books aren't just good for escaping people, they're also good for finding people.

You basically summed up what I was about to say! ;D I love reading because I like to escape this world and live in a new one. I grew up reading and loving characters like they were my friends, and I guess I've never stopped.

Whoever said that to you must've been incredibly ignorant about reading in general, let alone the *joys* of reading!

I simply cannot live with books and these are just some of the reasons :)

As I grew up I think there have been many reasons: escapism, wanting to improve my reading, vocabulary and writing skills through and I did this by reading. I think it also makes me think about the past a lot and that has always interested me.
Anyway I have more reasons but I think I'll stick with those!

yes exactly ^^

You have no idea. That guy was a total asshole. He would never even look at me, except when I was reading then he would come over and ask a ton of stupid questions, like why read the book when you can watch the movie? and then he would end the conversation by saying reading was stupid.

Reading is kind of like a million other lives.

I'm Safe ,myself and most of all Happy.

If I'm happy it just makes me feel better if I'm sad it cheers me up.
It transports me to another place where time passes quicker and I can get caught up.
It also helps me to be a better writer and to understand the world around me.

That's the sentence that's been written on my body (in love with my tattoo) , and the one I stand for every single day. For me, reading is the time I have to get my head out of this world, my routine and all my problems, and dive into an imaginary world, where I get to live someone else's life.

After Potter it took me a while to find a series that had me feeling that way again but what I love is I now find an escape in almost every book, I love the fact that one minute I could be sat in my room and then the next I'm transported to Hogwarts or the House Of Night (a vampire school)
So, I was wondering what got you guys into reading? and why do you like it?
