message 1: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Boquin The first time I was asked this question it was followed by a "Do you read because it helps you fill a hole inside you?" or something along those lines. I was so taken aback and offended by the fact that someone thought I couldn't like to read unless there was some dark reason behind it. At the time I was so angry I wasn't able to respond. I couldn't even begin to explain how for me the thrill of a book is to find new friends and to live a thousand stories with them.
So, I was wondering what got you guys into reading? and why do you like it?

Eliza Hackett | 8 comments when I was younger all I ever did was read, and I've never stopped! I've always read before I go to sleep and I don't think I'll ever stop it x it makes me so happy that I can go to a different world from the comfort of my own home :) #socliche

message 3: by Courtney (new)

Courtney Mikels | 47 comments When I was younger I never liked reading. I actually found it to be painful, but when I was 14 I read Alex Rider (which was the first book I wasn't forced to read) and I completely fell in love with reading! All I needed was the right book to enjoy. Since then I've read tons and I wish now I had more time to keep it up!

message 4: by LeeEl (new)

LeeEl | 28 comments I just like reading because it's fun :) I always learn new things, and I honestly think reading has helped me understand people. I really started reading in 2nd grade, when I read Harry Potter of the first time. My teacher was obsessed--she read it to us every friday and had a whole corner with Harry Potter wallpaper and things hanging from the ceiling, and lots and lots of books!

message 5: by Caterina (new)

Caterina | 1 comments I think that I read to find new people and myself.. Instead of the mirror, I found easier to watch myself through the words and the stories of a book: it's my way to grow up <3

message 6: by Jasmine20 (new)

Jasmine20 | 88 comments I always loved reading. I was always thought of as the strange kid who would rather have her nose in a book than eyes on the TV. I just think it makes me happy, so I do it. Simple.

message 7: by Jasmine20 (new)

Jasmine20 | 88 comments It also just develops your mind so much more. I always feel as if I spent my time wisely if I read :)

message 8: by [deleted user] (new)

Its only in the last few months that I started reading, even though my Mum and Dad were avid readers while I was growing up. I'm not entirely sure what made me start, I think it was all the feels I had reading The Fault in Our Stars by John Green.

I think everyone reads for different reasons. I can understand what that person Andrea was talking about means. For my personally I think it does make up for something I feel is missing. Some days, I feel empty without the company of a good book. Maybe you don't know what I mean.. or maybe you do. While a book is open the characters become my best friends, their world becomes mine. I see myself in the characters as they experience feelings I've felt before or those I'm feeling now. I find that reading is a good way to explore your own thoughts, a means of coping and maybe even a means of learning to deal with new situations. Books really do give you a better understanding of human emotions.

Naomi | 10 comments Gives me a chance to lead seperate lives as the characters from those books :)

message 10: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (simplylldxo) | 80 comments I love to read because... I actually have no idea, I just enjoy books! It also takes away my bad mood.

Danielle Alice May | 7 comments Jasmine20 wrote: "It also just develops your mind so much more. I always feel as if I spent my time wisely if I read :)"

I agree with Jasmine20 - reading makes you smarter. it also gives you a chance to experience things you normally wouldn't be able to experience in your every day life.

message 12: by Amy (new)

Amy | 2 comments Make me feel happy and makes me think that I'm making my nanna proud of me for reading knowing she is always looking down on me! She inspired me! And it's also fun and nice to get away from the real world sometimes!! :)

message 13: by Maisie (new)

Maisie | 2 comments I like to read because it gives me something to do in my spare time and gets me away from my laptop, I also find it very relaxing. The book that I am currently reading is 'Teardrop' by Lauren Kate.

message 14: by Tiara (new)

Tiara Zahra (tiaralala) | 11 comments Reading for me is a form of escape (I know that sounds weird but hear me out.) When I'm feeling sad or just 100% done with everything I like to read so I can forget for awhile and go to someone's else's shoes. And it's also loads of fun ;)

message 15: by Katie (new)

Katie (katiec2210) | 31 comments Similar to Tiara, reading is an escape for me - if it's been a bad or tedious day, I just pick up a book and end up getting completely lost in this fantasy world which always makes me feel better! I love finding characters I identify with, and of course those who seem to be my polar opposites, because it's just so interesting, almost like you're looking in to somebody's imagination! X

message 16: by Zahro (last edited Mar 09, 2014 03:35PM) (new)

Zahro Different reasons for different authors/genres.
Emily Rodda because I've been reading her books for about a decade (since I was six, which I'm very proud of) and she can build the most beautiful, fantastic worlds I've ever read (not to mention the characters and plot-twists!). They're inspiring and will never stop being fun.
Fantasy in general is incredibly entertaining.
Non-fiction because I love learning new things about anything I can.
The action of reading itself is very calming.
Characters! I love characters!

message 17: by Rosie (new)

Rosie Rosales | 9 comments I think it was because I like living a billion lives. I get new friends along the journey. Also because I will learn what do in a situation when the time come. Like idk aliens come to earth or how to deal with first love or whatever. Idk I just know that I love reading and it make me happy and that is all that matters ^.^

Kira Nerys | 4 comments Caterina wrote: "I think that I read to find new people and myself.. Instead of the mirror, I found easier to watch myself through the words and the stories of a book: it's my way to grow up <3"

I think you just summed up why I've always loved reading in a single sentence. :)

message 19: by Catherine (new)

Catherine | 10 comments I can escape into a world I want to be in and forget real life for a moment.

message 20: by Alejandra (new)

Alejandra Garcia Bittar (alegarciabittar) Wow, quite a question, and I'm not really sure I know the definite answer to it. But I have to say when I was younger I didn't read that much, I read, I loved reading, but it wasn't really something I spent all my time doing, it's only more recently that I've been wanting to read more and want to spend so much of my time reading!

But why do I read? Because I think it takes me on adventures, because you can grow as a person, because it helps me understand. Understand people and things around me, understand language, understand cultures, just understand the world. To see it all from a point of view that might be different from yours.

It's just the best thing in the world!

message 21: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth | 21 comments Reading is literally the BEST form of relaxation (well, in my opinion anyway) I love to explore new worlds and situations that I will probably never experience, but can through reading. I also love to learn new words that I've never heard before :-)

message 22: by Darby (new)

Darby | 217 comments Well when I was little I lived on a farm in the middle of absolutely no where. Half the time the TV didn't work and I didn't have any contact with people my own age. My mom is completely crazy about books and reading and theatre and music, If she knew how to Internet she would be on this site like white on rice, we spent lots of time reading and acting and singing and dancing when I was really little (and we still kind of do. Don't judge)

She'd read to me. And not just stuff like Curious George, and Clifford. No. I sat through Lord of The Rings when I was 5. Quite honestly I think the most depressing day for her as a parent was when I was 7 and told her that she didn't have to read Harry Potter aloud anymore because I was skilled enough to do it myself. Tears were shed.

When our family fell apart, as many do these days, I didn't have anyone to go to except for my books. Bluestar, Firestar, Ravenpaw (all from Warriors), Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire (Series of Unfortunate Events) and Harry, Ron, and Hermione (I feel that one goes without saying) quickly became my new best friends. Reading was how I forgot how mad I was at everyone on this planet and how I got away from them. But this past year I've learned that books aren't just good for escaping people, they're also good for finding people.

message 23: by Tay (new)

Tay (inyoureyesiamcomplete) | 8 comments I like to read as an escape. Words bring me into another world. I can open up a book and forget that everything that's going wrong even exists. I don't live to read, I read to live.

Abby | 2 comments Taylore wrote: "I like to read as an escape. Words bring me into another world. I can open up a book and forget that everything that's going wrong even exists. I don't live to read, I read to live."

You basically summed up what I was about to say! ;D I love reading because I like to escape this world and live in a new one. I grew up reading and loving characters like they were my friends, and I guess I've never stopped.

Stephanie (stecky) | 29 comments Andrea wrote: "The first time I was asked this question it was followed by a "Do you read because it helps you fill a hole inside you?" or something along those lines. I was so taken aback and offended by the fac..."

Whoever said that to you must've been incredibly ignorant about reading in general, let alone the *joys* of reading!

message 26: by Jenny (new)

Jenny Pace (jennypace) | 5 comments I read because I want to see the world better. I love the different perspectives and how the world has changed in it's history. I want to understand, and I feel like reading opens up my world.

message 27: by Sophie (new)

Sophie | 18 comments I started really reading with the Harry Potter series, as i guess lots of people did. I love reading because I prefer learning things by experience and not in a classroom and I guess by reading book you get taken into a world where you can experience the things that don't (or do) actually happen in life, if that makes sense. The world and story of the book becomes your own and it opens your mind to new and different things.

message 28: by ThePerksOfBeingAFangirl (last edited Mar 10, 2014 10:05AM) (new)

ThePerksOfBeingAFangirl | 3 comments Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body. Reading not only develops your analytical thinking, expands your vocabulary or improves your writing skills but it's also just an escape from reality. A reader lives 1000 lives but the one who never reads lives 1.

message 29: by Natalie (new)

Natalie (natz281) | 10 comments I like to read because it allows me to escape from my personal life and lets me live another life through the characters (if that makes sense), plus books are always there if ever I feel lonely.

message 30: by Lois (new)

Lois Crowley | 2 comments I used to hate reading when I was younger, then when I was 12 I started reading the vampire academy and I just completely fell in love with books! it's like a whole other world to go to

message 31: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Kokx (lisakokx) | 24 comments I love to read because you can step away from life and time. You can step into another world and become a different person. You can forget about all the trouble and live a life you can only imagine.

message 32: by Sabrina (new)

Sabrina (strangerreads) | 1 comments I love to read cause it allows me to meet different people and travel to different worlds and go on adventures and live a thousand lives, I love to read cause it is the most amazing thing in the world :)

message 33: by Halah (last edited Mar 10, 2014 11:45AM) (new)

Halah (valhalah) I've always loved reading, and for tons of reasons. Books give me adventures that I can't really have in the 'real life'. They're like portals to other worlds, or my favourite comparison, like a tardis, much bigger on the inside and can take you far away. They're also an escape for those times when life is just not working for you. And this is cheesy, but they're sort of like friends too, and always there for you :P It also blows me away how writers can create those words that you get attached to, so thats why I try writing as well.

I simply cannot live with books and these are just some of the reasons :)

message 34: by Emilie (new)

Emilie Mules (emiliemooles) | 18 comments When I was little my parents and grandparents used to read me things like Dr Seuss's Green Eggs and Ham or Enid Blyton's the Magic Faraway Tree or C.S. Lewis Narnia (all of them!) and so one of the last things I thought about when I went to bed were these incredible stories and so I think this made me want to read more.
As I grew up I think there have been many reasons: escapism, wanting to improve my reading, vocabulary and writing skills through and I did this by reading. I think it also makes me think about the past a lot and that has always interested me.
Anyway I have more reasons but I think I'll stick with those!

message 35: by Halah (new)

Halah (valhalah) Helen wrote: "Sometimes when I'm reading I get completely lost in the world of the book, and forget everything about myself, and my life. The words aren't just on the page. I'm not just reading a book. I'm livin..."

yes exactly ^^

message 36: by Emma (new)

Emma | 3 comments I love reading because it allows you to live other peoples lives and feel like your life is more exiting than it actually is. i.e if im reading a book I feel like the person in the book and forget who i actually am. So Basically you get to live more than 1 life in a matter of hours.

message 37: by Nathan (new)

Nathan Thorson (nathansonofthor) | 16 comments I like experiencing the world through other peoples eyes, seeing different cultures and places through worlds. And most of all hearing about the amazing lives these fictional characters live.

Andrea Boquin Stephanie wrote: "Andrea wrote: "The first time I was asked this question it was followed by a "Do you read because it helps you fill a hole inside you?" or something along those lines. I was so taken aback and offe..."

You have no idea. That guy was a total asshole. He would never even look at me, except when I was reading then he would come over and ask a ton of stupid questions, like why read the book when you can watch the movie? and then he would end the conversation by saying reading was stupid.

message 39: by Orla (new)

Orla Kearney | 2 comments I read to escape

message 40: by Kaitlin (new)

Kaitlin Edwards (pandasaursrex) | 3 comments I read because it's a escape from the real word and anything can happen also because its how you see it in your mind from the words the author has given you, unlike a movie where everyone sees the same thing. (if that makes sense)

message 41: by georgia (new)

georgia (richardganseys) I read to live in ways I couldn't do in this world. I read to escape, to feel something, to have experiences through only ink on paper.
Reading is kind of like a million other lives.

message 42: by Megan (new)

Megan | 4 comments I don't like many people for many different resons so when I open a book an step into Hogwarts , wonderland ...
I'm Safe ,myself and most of all Happy.

message 43: by Isabella (new)

Isabella Bartlett | 19 comments i like to read because it takes me to another world away from everything terrible going on at the current moment..

message 44: by Jiras (new)

Jiras | 6 comments I love to read, because it's an escape for me. I used to do it in school breaks to forget all my surroundings and to relax. And I did it on my train journey to school everyday. But now that I'm working kind a stops me from it, which is a shame.

message 45: by Curiouslybecca (new)

Curiouslybecca | 18 comments I love those moments in a book when you feel totally consumed by it and you forget everything that is around you because for a short while that book is your escape from reality. It gives you the chance to live different lives, in different worlds over and over again and it's simply wonderful :)

message 46: by Angela (new)

Angela (thegreatwoodenfush) | 5 comments I read for whatever mood I'm in.
If I'm happy it just makes me feel better if I'm sad it cheers me up.

It transports me to another place where time passes quicker and I can get caught up.

It also helps me to be a better writer and to understand the world around me.

message 47: by Lou (new)

Lou Ferreiro (louferreiro) | 1 comments "A book a day keeps reality away"
That's the sentence that's been written on my body (in love with my tattoo) , and the one I stand for every single day. For me, reading is the time I have to get my head out of this world, my routine and all my problems, and dive into an imaginary world, where I get to live someone else's life.

message 48: by Ailsa (new)

Ailsa | 23 comments As a child I hated reading. I think it was because I had never found a single book that I enjoyed! It wasn't until I picked up books like Alice in Wonderland, Harry Potter and Roald Dahl that I realised how much I enjoyed reading! I read because it is so much fun being able to hear about different places from the comfort on my room! x

message 49: by Isabella (last edited Mar 13, 2014 03:43PM) (new)

Isabella | 2 comments As a kid I wasn't into reading or into words in general. Reading made me realize that I could admire words. Reading is intimate. It makes me think about sides of people I would have never thought about otherwise (ans myself too). It creates whole new worlds and notions, like I am in someone else's shoes but I can sympathize with them and get to know them better than I know many people I see everyday

message 50: by Jade (new)

Jade Starr (jadestarrx) | 13 comments I read also as an escape, I started reading properly when I was 7 with the Harry Potter series, it was the first time I'd found a book that I was hooked too, I had read other before but none that took me to another world like J.K did.
After Potter it took me a while to find a series that had me feeling that way again but what I love is I now find an escape in almost every book, I love the fact that one minute I could be sat in my room and then the next I'm transported to Hogwarts or the House Of Night (a vampire school)
