Marcy (marshein) | 214 comments This is going to sound stupid, but frankly I don't think GR is that user friendly! I cannot for the life of me figure out how to add a book to Currently Reading. There is not a single place anywhere to do so that is clearly marked.

Marcy (marshein) | 214 comments Whew!

message 3: by Eloreen (new)

Eloreen Moon (eloreenmoon) | 19 comments It's buried. And I couldn't for the life of me tell you how I do it, other than click the green button next to the button that says "Want to Read" under the book picture. That button also does shelves and such. Drives me nuts because it doesn't always drop down or I mis-click and hit read instead of currently reading, or vice versa.

Marcy (marshein) | 214 comments It's hardly worth the time. Stuff like this disgusts me, really, because we know it can be done well, or at least correctly. I mean, I had to laugh and cry about the Obama insurance thing, I just kept thinking, couldn't they hire good tech people? I really resent stuff like this.

Edward Wolfe (edwardmwolfe) You just hover your mouse over the green icon of books next to where it says Want To Read. You should see a list of things appear. Those are shelves.

Want To Read and Currently Reading are default shelves.
Below them, you'll see shelves you created and Add Shelf.

If hovering your mouse over the icon doesn't work, then you might want to try a different browser like Firefox or Chrome, or update your Internet Explorer to a newer version.

I am "lost" on the site. The search feature never works for me.

The search is only for finding books or authors.

The only other search feature I've found is if you go to the groups, then you can search for words that appear in the discussions.

Yes, it always comes back as NO SUCH BOOK EXISTS ( or words to that effect) and as they are usually my own books I am fairly sure they do exist. :-)

Search your name with quotes, like this:

"Sophie Meredith"

After a full half hour I have managed to add a book to a shelf. But am taking a break from trying to get the site to accept Suviving France as a nother of my books

Thx Edward and Vicki - will have another try after gardening (cannot waste this wonderful weather). Have a good day yourselves

message 12: by Marcy (new)

Marcy (marshein) | 214 comments I shouldn't say this, but misery loves company: I'm glad I am not the only one who cannot do the most simple tasks on this site!

message 13: by Marcy (new)

Marcy (marshein) | 214 comments Edward, I've copied your instructions and will try to add the book. Be back later with a report.

message 14: by [deleted user] (new)

Good luck, Marcy ...

message 15: by Marcy (new)

Marcy (marshein) | 214 comments Edward, thank you! Hovering over Want to Read worked. Now, how would we know that??

You have to discover it by accident. :)

As for the other problem of adding books, I don't understand the confusion, because it's pretty straight forward. You fill out the form.
But if that's not working, there's a Librarian group where they are very helpful about fixing problems with books.

message 17: by [deleted user] (new)

It's the "bookshelves" that drive me crazy ...

message 18: by Jani (new)

Jani Karlsson | 7 comments I run a small publishing company. How do I add my books on this service?

message 19: by Nick (new)

Nick (nickanthony51) | 400 comments Read the directions...

message 20: by Jani (new)

Jani Karlsson | 7 comments Sorry, new to this. I tried to do it by adding a website, but apparently I have to do it manually.

message 21: by [deleted user] (new)

When you find out, Jani, please let Marcy, Eloreen, Diana and myself know ....

message 23: by [deleted user] (new)

Yes, I have had very good help for individual problems, the administrator sometimes "fixing" my problem from his end.
But I just wish I could navigate the site on my own ...

message 24: by Jani (new)

Jani Karlsson | 7 comments Sophie,

I ended up doing it manually, but there are still books that I have published, that don't have a cover-picture. It seems that I have to become a "Librarian" to fix this...

If you did it manually, then you add the cover manually too.

message 26: by Jani (new)

Jani Karlsson | 7 comments Yes, for some books. But there were books that were already in the system without cover, and I couldn't change those.

message 27: by D.M. (new)

D.M. (dmyates) I just search for the book or author. When it comes up, if I've read the book I rate it then hover my mouse over the read and it asks if I want to review it.
Sometimes it takes awhile for the books to show up on your shelves.

message 28: by V.K. (new)

V.K. Finnish | 49 comments I sometimes have issues with linking/adding books, etc, myself, and I have to say (as Edward pointed out) that the folks who hang around the Librarian group have always been helpful! Here's the link for that group, for anyone who'd like it: https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/...

message 29: by Kathy (new)

Kathy Cybele | 1 comments I have a question about giveaways. Is it possible to ask the winners if they want their copy signed?

message 30: by D.C. (new)

D.C. | 198 comments Kathy wrote: "I have a question about giveaways. Is it possible to ask the winners if they want their copy signed?"

When you list the giveaway, you should be able to add that they are signed copies and you may be able to specify that this can be personalized if the winner likes. It's not considered appropriate to contact winners besides from sending them the book in question.
